- On March 5, 1946, Winston Churchill delivered his “Iron Curtain” speech at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, in which he said: “From Stettin in the Baltic, to Trieste in the Adriatic, an ‘iron curtain’ has descended across the continent, allowing police governments to rule Eastern Europe.”
t was a very big day in the history of Fulton, Missouri when President Truman and Winston Churchill paid their visit. During his address at Westminster College Mr Churchill spoke of the situation in Europe and the "iron curtain" which has descended between the east and west of the continent.

You think Nazis were better? With the unethical experiments, racial opression and explotation of any anti-Soviet movement, like Forest Brothers, UPA and OUN.
So many people from USSR gave their lives for the bright future for dosens of people.
Churchil wasn't grateful enough to see sacrifice of many soviet veterans, that was done for the sake of freedom of dozens of people, and not by "promoting communism"
This speech hits different after the events unfolding in Ukraine
It hits the same. It is again the West who is the first who builds an iron curtain. Because they are fraid of the truth.
what's happening in Ukraine have nothing to do with USSR
Yes, events have proven his foresight and wisdom. I expect Churchill would quickly recognize Putin’s resemblance to Hitler. Although Russia is not the USSR it is clear that Putin wants to recreate the old USSR as Greater Russia. If permitted, he would annex all of Ukraine to Russia.

But he said for a century
Today we have new challenges like Communist China, but sadly we don't have visionaries like Churchill
Instead we have ole bojo
It was not about hegemony then or now, friend.
It’s happening again 5000+ deaths daily in China not including the Uyghur Genocide that is also happening.
It’s like Germany all over again they cremate the bodies of the deceased without even informing the families that they have passed away,
They only help those who are young and have longer lifespans in the hospitals leaving the elderly vulnerable you can find footage of this online, no oxygen tanks not even a manual respiratory pump.
Shipping containers line the outside of crematoriums with at least 15-20 bodies inside.
Don't worry about it, we'll win. We always win. I can't imagine a world that isn't dominated by an English-speaking country - and i don't want to imagine it. It'd be a nightmare. A world dominated by China would be particularly nightmarish.
I would say our challenge is still the same but hardly with the new face, and that is Russia and more precisely Russian unforgotten Imperial ambitions. It's like a cancer that once for a short time in 90s was in remission, but soon as the new century came it metastasized to point that now we in place where it threatens us to spread to the rest of world, and we have to not only control it, but also destroy it so it never be able to came out, same as with Nazi Germany

how did you know this 5 months ago?
This speech shows you what is great about Churchill with all his justifiable fears about soviet expansion and what was wrong with NATO at the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union. This speech is about "unity of english-speaking nations" and about protecting it from possible adversary. It's not against the possible adversary in the first place. However, the position of NATO after the collapse of USSR was one of "you've lost, suckers" instead of "hey, you are finally free! congrats!". And we thought that we have won, not lose - we managed to get rid of the communist party and the totalitarian regime. And then we heard that we...ehm.. lost. Seems kind of strange. So a lot of people got resentful and were willing to embrace new authoritarian system if only it promised at least some form of "revenge" (there can be no real revenge, of course, except for nuclear apocalypse, because authoritarian crony capitalist countries tend to be pathetic colonies of their leaders and their friends).
But Churchill understood that. When he talked about Germany he always said that we shouldn't act as we had after WWI, when we robbed the defeated nation and left them with nothing, fertilizing the soil to grow resentment and radical nationalism.
@Tyler Bane What was the question)?
This exactly what is happening now
You wrote "the position of NATO after the collapse of USSR was one of "you've lost, suckers" ". What do you mean? It should be very strong insult, because you were seeking for a "revenge"?
The unity of the Anglo nations and states is just an intuitive fact. It's the legacy of the British Empire and USA. He's hardly a visionary to point it out. But the money power is evil. Churchill knew about it and was probably as untouchable as any politician but he watched his words
My grandfather guarded this speech as a member of the national guard, and he told me that they weren’t provided any ammo for their rifles and were meant to just scare people

A bit of history folks. Winston Churchill DID NOT reveal the Soviet Union's "iron curtain" over Eastern Europe, it was actually Lutz Graf Schwerin Von Keosigk , Germany's Foreign Minister during WWII that revealed what the Soviets were doing. IJS
I can scream about any random event at the top of my lungs and no one will really pay attention. When Winston Churchill says it everyone sits up and takes notice. There is a reason many historians tie the beginning of the Cold War to this speech. Americans had been propagandized during the war that the Soviets weren't all that bad; the propaganda came because the Soviets were our allies. Any enemy of my enemy is my friend. The general population had to know there was a new enemy in the field even if it wasn't a hot war. Churchill delivered that message and not everyone in America was happy to hear it.

The difference between him and Boris Johnson is embarrassing. Whatever anyone thinks about Churchill he was an amazing orator. Johnson on the other hand is a bumbling buffoon.
People said the same of Churchill, they saw him as a joker unfit to be in front line politics. Boris has an opportunity to cement his Churchillian aspirations.
@@brycebealey1719 No he really doesn't. Boris Johnson is crap at oratory and has no idea what the hell he is doing policy wise getting all his advice from mini Goebbels aka Dominic Cummings.
Just as an aside Churchill wanted Britain in Europe and said so many times before world war 2, during it and after so he'd be furious with Boris Johnson.
Trash Series, irony is your forte. You are mentioning the NHS on a historical Churchill clip which dates back to 1946 and the iron curtain speech. The very same year Churchill and other senior conservatives voted against the creation of the NHS, believing it to be the first steps of socialism, British people and indeed the world should to truly thankful that the conservatives were no longer in power. The fact is the NHS allowed many people to live whole and fruitful lives and became a beacon to other countries to provide health care for all, the USA still has not caught up.

Churchill ain’t a hero, he was a cold blooded colonialist, just like his predecessors. He had blood of poor colonized Indian peasants on his white hands. The descendants of millions of people perished in the great famine of 1940s in Bengal, upon the orders of Churchill, will never exonerate him. Those atrocities will continue to haunt him in his afterlife, and will be a scar on Britain’s colonial past. It was Churchill who called Bengalis “rats”!
