I was given these tips some 36 years ago from a gentlemen by the name of Kenny Shae. I had arrived in Halifax Nova Scotia, and joined one of the city pool leagues. Kenny (our team captain) had coached me into using these techniques shown in this video, but on the pool tables. It is nice to see how Stephen took it a step farther and applied them to snooker, where the difficulty level was much greater.
Much like Stephen's approach, Kenny had instilled upon me the philosophy of "If your opponent can't touch the cue ball, they can't beat you". Thus I began to break open tough ball locations, creating my own second break if my opponent failed to break properly, etc. Kenny even had me practice on snooker tables prior to my pool tournaments and league play. [Fun fact] when you practice on pockets that barely allow ping pong balls, pool table "sloppy" pockets provide endless opportunities to juice your cue ball and play better cue ball tactics.
This was a well put together video, and whether snooker or billiards or pool is your jam, i highly recommend you subscribe.
Thanks to BFL for this great reminder of days gone by. Keep up the great work. !

I remember watching him as a kid. Never really played snooker but the little I know I've learned from him. Even if you knew nothing about the game you could still see what a master he was.
He played to win that for sure. "Only way to control the game is being at the table". Yep. That was him.

It's all about percentage play at the end of the day although there are always a lot of factors to consider and it mostly comes down to intuition from being in similar spots hundreds of times. eg. you have to think about how likely you'll win the frame by playing a shot vs the likelyhood of losing and then compare it with your chances of winning by playing a safety shot.
In some cases it's correct to go for the shot that has LESS chance of winning you the frame too. This is all because of variance. In the example you gave about Hendry - it was arguably a shot that would have been the wrong choice to play if the scores were level because you'd expect to miss it more than 50% of the time and gift the game to your opponent. However, when you are 14-9 down to 18 your chance of winning the match is already low. If you play % and low variance snooker, you are less likely to come back and win. You need to play high variance - take risks on some shots. This will give you the most chance of coming back to try and win the match - and is ultimately what he ended up doing.

Yes, in his prime, Snookers ultimate winning machine, he made close to 500 centuries only in the 90's, in an era with much less tournaments than today...His decline was not because of the yips like he sometimes claims but because he had achieved everything he wanted, started to pursue other interest and brought down his daily training regime.

Hi, David from Lawrence, NSW Australia here.
I quite enjoy your videos, and as an established top A grade player I think you are explaining the basics very well, very well thought out videos.
If I was learning I would come to this channel for the best advice on how to improve I've yet seen.
As a fellow long time player, I agree with a great deal of your lessons, and many of the practice routines you show are ones I do myself very often. Mr Hendry is who I modelled myself on personally, and it served me very well. Ronnie took it to another level, but I am 6 years older than Ronnie and it was Stephen's approach that I copied as best I could.
I concentrated on being very good at awkward shots, such as long pots of all types, cuing from on the cushion, over balls and using all of the equipment. As I was playing defensive players I often found myself in these positions, and being able to pot your way out or play a strong safety from these positions gave me an edge.
That, and Stephens mental approach are what I took from him, and it made me very difficult to beat, I was never out of a game until the last ball went in.
Kudo's, and keep making this great content. Cheers.
