- We caught up with Annie Clements (Maren Morris, Side Piece) and Thad Beaty-her husband, former bandmate, guitarist, and the co-creator of the Bass of the Future-at their home. We discussed not only the bass in question, but how their music-making has changed through the pandemic, what they're most looking forward to as tours resume, and more.

Geddy Lee from Rush solved this by having a Moog Taurus (looks like the foot bars on an organ) on the floor, so he could still play bass… and he sang too (yes, it’s juggling a lot of things at once, and standing on one foot too). Plus all three band members had gear to trigger MIDI hooked into samplers, so they could play live versions of complex songs so the audience hears songs as they are on the album.
It's fun, guys. Don't make this so deep. As far as I can tell, she's not marketing this or selling a DIY kit online. Remember fun? I play the guitar and keys (both badly) and i think this would be a lot of fun to try. Look how much fun she's having!
Simp.
@@Catsincages you don't know what that means
@@Catsincages Wimp.
A lot of people seem really mad at this lady for finding a setup that suits her needs
I saw someone build a similar kind of bass-synth-hybrid, seven or eight years aog. Completely forgot about it, but that is a really cool approach.
NICE!
Beautiful, portable and K.I.S.S. solution. I use an alternative pedalboard the size of guitarists to get some synth sounds. Attaching a midi kbd with synth like this enables new levels of performance, and gets to be more portable. Not to forget unhindered movement like avoiding running back to the spaceship to switch synth spund on and off.
🥇
I think i understand it for the sake of wow factor, but not for the efficency. I used to play basslines with a mix sound of analog and synth, i prefer synth pedals, press the swith and voila, your bass sounds like a beast synth. But, its her cup of tea i guess. Keep on pluckin'.
Sure but this you can play both at the same time.
Like these guys. What's the hub again?
C4 Synth has a preset for that sound
I don't get it, I mean, basically it's just more powerfull to trigger synths via midinotes captured from the bass itself with some pedals (EHX and Boss make some)
Or maybe am I wrong ?
It's fun for the audience I guess
Yeah but a plain keyboard is always going to be better for key parts than a tracked emulation/conversion. Also different instruments inspire different playing so she probably just prefers the feel of the keys
@@jaredhouseman2094 Oh come on! Nobody does this because it is a lame AF gimmick 😹
@@Catsincageswhat are you talking about? Bassist have been playing key bass since the synths existed.
From Roland:
www.rolandus.com/blog/2014/11/21/synth-bass-player-part-1/
"Of course, bass players have been doing double duty on keyboards for decades. Going back to the ‘70s and ‘80s, players in bands such as Genesis, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Rush, the Police, and the B-52s used either analog synth bass pedals or analog keyboards to enhance their live sound. However, these instruments lacked the modern features we enjoy today, such as easy patch backup, onboard multi-effects, and USB connectivity."
@@Catsincages Many artists do this. Several of which are famous musicians but sure keep hating.
Yea you can track the bass with midi but with the keyboard you can have both at the same time which is usually one of the main points of the set up for those of us that use it. For example watch my cover of Lucky Man by ELP. In that I play the guitar and synth part at the same time using this kind of set up.
Jay Wasco has been messing with similar instruments for years.
Jay Wasco is a legend! He makes some wild stuff. First time I saw it done was his Heart Of Gold cover on his Swiss Army Bass. I've taken a full dive into trying it myself now but I use and electric octave mandolin as the string instrument. I'm developing a right hand technique of thumb picking while playing the keys so it doesn't have to be all hammer-ons. So far its been great fun and it is expanding my performance capability quite a lot.
crazy
I mean I can see the appeal, but is this something that can't be done with a boss synth pedal?
Not if you are trying to emulate a serious piece of analog gear, like moog minitaur. Even other moog sibblings cant reproduce (mini)taur(us) thickness.
@@petougaothe lenght people are willing to go to emulate sounds instead of just playing music, man. This is for show tho, which I agree with btw, but it's totally not because of tone
I am a corksniffer. And I tend to forget that about myself. Got great bandmembers who keep reminding me.
I mean you could also put a Moog on a keyboard stand. I feel like the keyboard on the bass itself is not that practical. Dan Freeman’s bass is more futuristic imo
It's a more attractive performance. Does not obstruct view, bass player keeps the format the audience is used to, movement, dancing.
Absolutely but the beauty in this set up is I use it wirelessly so I'm free to walk the stage and out into the audience while playing both same time.
a dont think so
