I don't remember if you know Colin Scott from CSGuitars, but he took a metal guitar, made it more metal, and then modded a Boss Metal Zone onto it! It was awesome. And now here you are building a...keybass...I cannot get enough of you guys! Now, Slappa da bass! O.M.G. Checkmate!
I try to play a "Chapman Stick" (nothing to do with Rob) which is basically a guitar and a bass welded together. I'm currently building an electric harp guitar (6 bass strings and a standard guitar) so I will be experiencing that new instrument feeling again fairly soon. Nice maker vid!
I am now seriously considering modding my bass with a MIDI keyboard/controller. Will I use my MS-20 USB controller, the small M-Audio or the big M-Audio? Too many choices… I think it's time to take my Frankenbass out of its case and start designing and making decisions. Thanks for the inspiration!
Annie Clements (Clem) here!!! SLAPPA-DA-BASS! I can’t tell you how delighted I was watching this video!! You absolutely nailed it (dual locked it). Thank you for the kind words. And I love your jams on the Bass of the Future!! I’ve been working on trying to play both at the same time as well, it’s a fun/wacky challenge. Ultimately I was just trying to solve the problem of not wanting to drag around a separate keyboard and it’s ended up being so much fun to play and has inspired lots of ideas. The spirit of this instrument is exactly as you presented it; it’s all about having fun and being creative. So glad you dig it! What a treat, thank you for this excellent video!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hey thanks! Yes, as soon as I started making music with it I realized how fun it is. I’ve been playing it a lot and maybe getting better. I need to figure out a way have grow another hand 😂
@@jeppej4265 Just like Geddy Lee! 👍 But MIDI pedals are not cheap and it becomes a less portable rig, defeating the idea of not having to lug around too much gear. Especially if you plan to carry around an original Moog Taurus… 😉
SLAPPA-DA-BASS! Found your video after I found Annie C’s video, after looking for *any* picture reference of Tony Levin’s keyboard-on-bass setup from the games without frontiers (Peter Gabriel)era. THANK YOU for helping to show the mounting mechanics!
Interesting, a previous bass player that I had used what looked like Hammond organ bass pedals as pads whilst playing the bass, extremely effectively. This post inspired me to slappa da bass 😎🎙🎸✅
I bought an old organ (£10) then gutted it for the pedals. I left the midi and sound attached (ugly and need to make sure the mains in insulated). One day will use velostat and an arduino to generate an poly after touch controller.
How much space is routed behind the pick-guard? If you swapped the pots toward the back of the body, they'd be accessible. The jack could easily sit behind the keyboard if you used 90degree lead. You might need to find an un-drilled pick-guard, or make one for the spacing to work.
@@TheGuitarGeek That's without hacking up the body... You could move the pots back & drill through to put a telecaster-style jack on the side of the body pretty easily too.
That’s just full on geek Andy. I love it if you hook up a drum machine and arpeggiator software you could have some cool riffs going. Excellent video Andy ❤️👍👍 Slappa da base mon !!
Slappa Da Bass! Cool concept but like you said, I think it would take some time to develop the coordination skills to maximize the bass+keyboard. Fun video 👍🏻
"Slap or debase", courtesy of youtube captions. You're welcome. Seems like this would be far less clunky if you forego the hinge/pseudowedge arrangement and just mounted the keys direct to the bass (perhaps even route it out for the purpose, though that will pretty much ruin your resale value... unless these things catch on and then you can bank on the prototype money.) For me, I'll probably just, y'know, play bass in front of an actual keyboard if that's ever needed.
My nephew caught a fish the other day, but it came up spouting all sorts of foul language I didn't want my brother's progeny to repeat. So, I proceeded to slappa' da bass until I had it off the hook and returned to its watery clime.
Do you still play it? I made one too but I cut the body a bit and put the keyboard closer to flush with the pick guard so I can thumb pick while playing the keys. It works very well but I do also want to relocate the knobs. Check out the Jay Wasco Swiss Army Bass. I've been searching and making a playlist of string keytar builds and players.
@@TheGuitarGeek Awesome! Did you end up making any changes to it? One of my recent evolutions was adding a tiny smartphone to it to have the midi right on it. Alternatively 8 got this headless midi module called a squish box I thought about building into it.

If you can`t grow a third arm you need some serious traing on you fretting hand to slap to the bass if you wanted to play keys and strings simultaneously. Enjoy the weekend and find good spots to hide your children`s Easter treats.

Awesome. I can't believe Clem actually commented, too. She knows how to slap-a-da-bass.
I’m surprised the Velcro worked out, I thought for sure screws would be involved. In Velcro we trust!
I’m going to have to go with mkii soon, mki is good until then!
In the next episode of The Guitar Tinkerer, Andy mounts a saxophone onto a Stratocaster! Job well done, and slap-a-da-bass!
Don’t think I won’t!!! 😂😂😂
If there isn’t a Clements signature slap-a-da-bass of the future in Fender’s 2022 lineup then they’ve all lost their marbles.

I recognized the keyboard the moment you showed the close up. I am officially a gear guy now.
This isn’t such a recent concept. Check Tony Levin using this setup on Digging In The Dirt from Peter Gabriel’s Secret World Live concert 1994
