Sorry, this is a bit long:
In the beginning of 1981 there were a total of twelve World Champions in history up to that time: Karpov, Fischer, Spassky, Petrosian, Botvinnik, Tal, Smyslov, Euwe, Alekhine, Capablanca, Lasker, and Steinitz. Eight were alive, but there were also three others living that would eventually win the title: Kasparov, Kramnik, and Anand, making the total number of living World Champions (past, present, and future) eleven. Euwe died in November of that year. The youngest of that group, Kramnik, was born in June 1975, so for those six-plus years, there were eleven World Champions alive at the same time. From what I can tell, that was the most living at one time. Before Alekhine died, he was one of eight past, present, or future champions living.
Steinitz, the first deceased World Champion, died in August 1900. When he died, Lasker reigned, Capablanca was 11, Alekhine was 7, and that was it. When Steinitz won the championship, he and Lasker were the only champions yet alive.
Currently, we've got Carlsen, Anand, Kramnik, Kasparov, Karpov, and Spassky still alive. And who knows how many future World Champions are with us right now.

If you include the FIDE world champions from the early 2000s, you will get additional WCs. Maybe 4 more. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Chess_Championship. With all the teen age GMs we have, we may have a few more in the new future. We would have had several more but for the dominance of Carlsen and Kasparov.

I love this following quote for him, one day I'll have it framed and hanged in my man cave : )
"If the opponent offers keen play I don’t object; but in such cases I get less satisfaction, even if I win, than from a game conducted according to all the rules of strategy with its ruthless logic."

Russians would never ever attack their chess players over politics 🙄 that's mental, unthinkable nonsense.

Instead cxd5 I thaught of Re5. It's blocking the queen, protecting f5 pawn and atacking d5 pawn... Maybe the next move for white would be Rd1e1 doubling up the rooks... What do you think of that???

    • @pablofleitas5967

Not sure, but probably black would just take the rook, getting back the exchange and going into a rook endgame up a pawn.
