I thought it was implied that the lamp story was not all there was to it, that as obsessive academics their deaths were due to failing to take greater care around dangerous magical artifacts, which lead to their demise. It was paralleling Sebastian’s own academic pursuit of a cure and how it leads to his fall. Maybe I read too much into it, but I could have sworn that some of the comments from his uncle and such suggest their deaths were not some simple accident.
Alternatively, the writers could've easily let Solomon give this exposition. When MC first talks to him, he could tell her how Sebs parents lost their lives to dark magic.

I thought ominis was sus during his introduction cuz he refused to look at me… and then i found out about his blindness and seeing his actions in the story after that instantly made him my number one 😢
