My guy breaks down the theory to the point of explaining the numbering system/scale degrees/how chord progressions work in general, instead of just assuming that people know their theory (when a lot of people didn't have the privilege to be taught it). You my brother have earned my respect, keep it up 💪🏾
I came here because I wanted to start composing more R&B inspired music and this video helped a lot. I also do believe what you're explaining is the Lydian mode. It is the fourth mode of the major scale. It sounds really nice and uplifting. Thank you for the cool video!
this is amazingg!!! ive been playing around with piano for years and years, by learning the chords to songs, but i havent understood any of the music theory behind what im doing. knowing these progressions and how they relate to the key that theyre in by numbers is so frickin transformative. Thank you for sharing (:
So glad to hear it! I’m going to be releasing a piano course VERY soon that I think you’ll enjoy. I break down a lot more chord progressions in it :) Stay tuned.
Thanks man I'm disabled ex bassist from the 60s+70s I have Lou Gehrig's disease and miss playing music thanks to you my man I'm back into it .deepest respect to you .George
I was always afraid to play in any key but Cmaj7 and never thought about moving fingers until i saw this. Been self-training training so hearing the notes makes sense how these tones I now here make sense. R&B is hard enough but thanks for keeping it super simple because in the end, it's basic chords that make the song. Added chords like 9ths and 13ths and all that is only for the snobs who think they way they sound, is just to sound good. . Thanks again man for this, you opened up a new milestone of music for me and I tried this progression in different progressions... smooth!!
All my producers and beat makers. If you like these chords I recommend checking out my MIDI pack at carletonmaybell.com. Listen to the beats I made with the pack and let me know what you think! Thanks for your support 💯💯
Hello Carleton, I have a question, some of these progressions dont include the tonic of the key, ie the 1 chord, so how would someone identify or use the key of the song if the chord progression doesnt highlight the I chord, like in a I, V progression?
When you talk about the number system are you referring to the notes on a scale? And when you were talking about how most people don't call the 8th note number 8 but number one, Would that mean that a new octave started, because there are only 7 letters in the musical alphabet? Idk I'm new to music stuff
Yo u really got me when u would play the progression the second time and sing a different song that just make these progressions so much better u can do more than 1 song on 1 progression
Bro thank you for keeping this simple, the way you broke this down got me playing my first chord progression with the inversions it sounds beautiful. Much love
Been playing piano longer than I want to admit, but have been stuck in a "pop" environment of 1, 4, 5 chord progressions ad-nausea.... this is a nice set of progressions to add to my repetoire. Thank you! Easy to follow along. Appreciate it.
I LOVED this video!!! I've been waiting on a video like this. And the singing really helped me put the chords into context. Please do more and thank you for sharing your God given talent. It was right on time!!
The way you explain the mechanics and motives behind these chords is so clear and easy to understand, I think you could easily cater to the producer/beatmaker community by posting up more of these tutorials where you break it down more generally like in this video vs one song. Your insights are truly amazing and easily to master yourself! Please keep it up! Peace from amsterdam!
Yes! I feel the same way. I always watch jazz piano videos and I feel like an idiot because I can’t figure out what they’re talking about. And I have a masters in piano lol! I really liked this video please make more of them. It was really helpful.
From all tutorials out there, this one is my favorite, he explained not just in a particular base key, this tutorial can be easily implemented to any key! Subscribed bro, keep it up!
Great job on the video! Simplistic yet informative and your able to build the technique without focusing on theory. The singing helps imagine what songs fit the progression. A+
