      You know, I’m very young and hadn’t seen this guy play so when I saw ur comment I immediately thought there’s no way he’s technically better than foden etc but after watching this I’m amazed, if hoddle was born in this era he’d be recognised properly as one of the greatest

    • @racertian

      @@Sho2Funny Today players are far less likely to shoot from distance than in Hoddle's day. Far more importance these days is placed on keeping possession of the ball. Shame because it was exciting to watch when someone as talented as Hoddle was scoring such breath-taking goals. Thanks for your kind comment.

    Was at Stoke for his 1st goal and also Mansfield away when he equalised to keep us in the hunt for promotion. I wonder how much he'd be worth these days. Eat your heart out Grealish.

      He'd be worth nothing today as he would have been coached to pass it sideways and backwards which is the reason no one comes close anymore.

    This content was suggested to me as I had commented, for a video on Cantona, that Platini, Cantona and Hoddle were my all time three favorite players, with similar technical abilities and flair. However, I had forgotten how many exceptional goals Hoddle scored. Now definitely place him before Cantona.

    Grew up watching this genius and had the pleasure of seeing most of these goals live. 52 caps for England, complete joke. Bit like Scholes later, was shoved out on the left by negative, clueless managers... Robson and Reid could have been the perfect complement for his talent with a little bit of vision. Clough tried to sign him, if that doesn't convince you try the best player ever to the play the game. I was at Ossie Ardiles' testimonial in the mid 80s. Hoddle played alongside Maradonna who came out and said afterwards that England should build their whole team around Hoddle

  • @salamander981
    @salamander981 6 років тому +16

    English coaches didn`t really know how to use players like Glenn Hoddle. Alan Hudson and 2 or 3 others were also overlooked. I think the Dutch and certainly the French team of the 80`s may well have appreciated Glenn a lot more, and used a system which would have allowed him to flourish. Still, he got 53 caps, but should have been more. If Dave Sexton had been England manager, he would, I think, have built his team around Hoddle.

      Yes, Platini said exactly that. He said that if Glenn was French, he would’ve got 150 caps and he would’ve had to play second fiddle as Glenn was the master.

    My favourite English footballer by far.
    Unreal talent.
    And...... I'm Arsenal, true but he was brilliant, we had Brady who was amazing but truthfully speaking he wasvnot in the same league as Hoddle.
    I know a bit too, was in the Arsenal Youth team in 84. I was a left winger when KC RIP scored 60 goals in 1 season in the youth team.
    Back to Hoddle - best English footballer of his a other generations in my book.

    There's a number of quality number 10's that didn't get the England caps / status they deserved. The national teams obsession with sticking with a rigid 4-4-2 for so long meant those quality players never really got the opportunity to play the #10 role for England - in the way other nations would have built a team around them. Hoddle was one of the very best of those. Probably the best. An absolutely great player.
