The brand was founded in 1982 by Massimo Osti
More on him later!
A commonly used nickname for Stone island is Soney- post Malone pose
first adopted by the Paninaro youth in Italy in the ’80s - their style was very much inspired by ’50s Americana, but combined with sporty Italian designer labels. It was around this period that British football fans, following their teams to European Cup games, started bringing back some of these same labels to wear on terraces in the UK
Now some say its early evolution as a cultural staple started thanks to soccer hooligans from the UK. They wanted to avoid cops and rival clubs so instead of wearing team colors they started wearing flashy designer stuff…
Not sure how one led to another…but I wasn’t around so I just gotta assume that’s how they got down….with the get down
this eventually would turn into a dick measuring race for who could have the most expensive, rarest, most modern threads, and stone island fit THA BILL
Many would say Stone Island was perfectly suited for “casual Culture” - the supreme of its time basically…except instead of a box logo you have this famous patch that allows people to know you mess with stone island, and ya got good taste…since the pieces stand out and are obviously high quality…but to the untrained eye are not a loud obnoxious statement
This eventually evolved to finding Stoney in inner cities and tied to the grime scene, with THA PATCH now a badge of raw masculine muscle
Now theres a lot of thought that Grime OG Skepta’s close ties to drake led to Drake being turned on to Stone Island and leading a young generation of young hypebeasts to know about the brand in the first place
And that may be true, but at the end of the day, you cant grow as a brand or garner respect, without substance, and boy does Stone Island have it…
They’re renowned for pushing the boundaries of technology and innovation in their military designed garments for decades…and im very drawn to brands like that…those that push us forward and are constantly looking to evolve
I mean…heat reflective fabrics??? Are u kidding me??
I really tried to find a piece of those but they are literally impossible to find. Always sold out. Or lack of something in my size. Or whatever. Such a shame. Cuz that’s so bad ass
Massimo Osti set the blueprint for Stone Island and his legacy still informs where it is today. He’s the man who brought us reflective jackets, color-changing heat-reactive jackets, polyurethane-lined weather protective jackets, reversible jackets, dual-layer jackets with removable linings. These are all ideas that are now commonplace, and I guarantee that every major fashion house in the world has some of his work in their archive somewhere.
The compass symbolised love for the sea and an aim for constant research.
It drew influence from naval military uniforms
Osti was obsessed with military and workwear
The name for the brand was inspired by Joseph Conrad novels, and apparently the words STONE and ISLAND came up ova. And ova. And OVA again…leading Osti to use it as his brand name given his extensive experiementaiton with sea elements on his fabrics.

It belongs to the casuals not the hypebeasts
lots have said that
Casuals=football/soccer hooligans.... The problem is that the true hooligans have moved to other brands because Stoney has become mainstream and also well.
ricardo soto yea like cp company. Too many people wear stone island now
What about Paul and Shark and One True Saxon? Are there popular among hools?
ricardo soto Paul and shark is a bit but it isn’t recognised as much even though imo it’s way better quality and if by true Saxon you mean true religion then Edwin jeans are usually more popular
i hate hypebeast wearing stone island
i dont hate it, but i understand it
No, that stigma comes from the fact that a lot of football ‘hooligans’ wear clothing by stone island. Then because of that a lot of other people started to dislike it and became deterred from purchasing products from the brand.
Dadasha the Italians are hooligans themselves, called ultras and ‘white trash english chavs’ lots are of African/Carribean roots especially London and midlands teams
You are lowkey hating them because you want to be like them.
@@dadasha There are Football Fans all over Europe wearing it. It's Synonymous with The Weekend Offender. The Person, NOT the Brand. I first saw it on Scousers, then Aberdeen casuals(around '85-'86), then Everywhere across the Country, of BRITAIN. UK is Made up of 4 Countries.; I'm Scottish. From Edinburgh, and a Proud Jambo.
Stone Island will always be for the Hooligans.

what a shame
yeah keep it casual

I am a Brit and can confirm it is indeed a hooligan certified brand. Gotta hide that certilogo bredrin!
lol so many ppl have said that now im startin to worry
Needn't worry, it's aiiight!
I know for a fact that Stone Island hate this Image, I used to know somebody who worked for them. Its stems from the football fans who took a liking to the brand.
I'm only going from what a mate told me, this was 20 years ago. He worked for them when we were students and he told me that they really don't like the negative Image that can be associated with some of the fans. I've never followed football but I do still own a few good SI jackets from 20 years back.
Doctor Soles11 Stone island is NOT hype
The reason it went from football shirts to designer gear is because the hooligans would travel abroad, shoplift a load of designer gear and bring it back and show off that they've followed their team in Europe and have all this designer gear to show for it.
No chance a working class lad from Burnley is buying it ahah, that's how it was obtained
lol makes sense

The clothing is not bad at all but it’s has a bad imago bc of the people who wear it.
Yeah cafe mods basically but still mostly unknow until casuals blew up still remember going to europe with liverpool lads to steal shit
Hope the hypebeasts are happy with themselves, look at the price of the new season
lol
Hype beasts buy vintage tees by the 'highest to lowest' in price of bands they dont listen to and distress further. Of course theyre happy with themselves.
How much has it gone up by? I bought a sweater from flannels about 5 year ago for £150
Don Maynard sweatshirts are 190 rrp now
-- make that £205 now
hate seeing Americans or hypebeasts in a stony. it belongs to the UK football hooligan culture, and they're ruining that exclusiveness.
i can appreciate that perspective as something being ruined, but ultimately i think its more open minded to realize that good brands will always find their way to a broader audience than the culture/subgroup that feels very attached to it at an earlier stage; again assuming it truly is a good brand- which SI obviously is. so yes it will lose its exclusivity, but if you mess with the brand i think you'll look past that, and if you feel your exclusivity is what made you fall in love with the brand as a proxy, you and others that feel the same will gravitate to something new/else and the exclusivity will start again. stay hopeful my friend!
henry bowler who knew hooligans were such babies about who wears the same clothes as them lmfao
So only hooligans Can wear it?
Most of them Can’t even afford it
LOL
Hooligans are a joke to the rest of the world pal 😂
The best thing about stone island is how they make the badge, they purposely put imperfections in it, so replica badges are actually made perfectly and it's quite obvious when one is fake
ahh good to know!
Also always have things like the drop stitch which fakes don’t have
I've actually seen the fakes having drop stitch now, best way to tell is by the thing the buttons go through, on real it should be curved, on fakes it is straight.
OOQARFASOFSAIF yea on fakes it’s just a slit but on real they have been cut properly
CP Company is my go-to brand now, now rappers have started wearing Stone Island. They've made it to commercial
yea i tend to hear a lot of that in these comments lol
Yh and cp like the casuals as we saw with there colab with three stripes whereas stoney like Nike and want to leave the casuals
same for me. my Stone Island has been buried for a few years and I've invested mostly into CP Company when it comes to casual wear. I'm sure CP will be picked up and ruined soon too.
You are right about CP and Stone Island. I tend to have gone to CP more recently. But Stone Island seem to have got a lot better lately. But I would say unless your buying a nice coat from CP , Stone Island is bringing out some really nice quality pieces. The CP clothing just doesn’t have that same quality or wear well after some time. Not a fan of the calibrations for either or this America fellas , he’s a doughnut. Nice coat that jacket though.
I agree
The hooligan image is dying , the thing I hate is how Americans think its a new brand. Been by far the bestselling premium brand in the UK for at least 25 years
Your wrong mate casual are on the rise
@@GreenCocanix nah mate, too bait for the hoolies.
Really? I truly don't know what's so special about this brand beside that logo that only screams "i have a lot of money and don't know what to do with it". Especially the UK has much better looking brands like Bellstaff, Barbour, Fred Perry, Burberry etc. who are also partly cheaper than Stone Isand.
Americans wearing Stone Island is like a kid from the UK wearing a blue bandana with a Crenshaw t shirt. Just weird and not right. You missed the history of the compass and the connection to the Celtic Cross and Right wing politics which some of the early hooligan firms had. That's ok though, wear it to the mall.
LOL. i legit died laughin readin this. thank you for that. also appreciate the added info for the compass! couldnt find much on it. if you have any links you could share i'd appreciate it. would love to learn more

That isn’t very casual if you ask me
Denxytube I'm not into it me
There was a particular match played against Liverpool and an Italian team. The Scouser supporters robbed a Stoney store. That's how it got popular. Because they cleared out the store entirely
Your dad at the end is too funny hahahaha he’s feeling so good in that jacket hahaha love it!
haha thanks. he's a G!
I’m making my way through your videos but I’m gonna need some more! They’re so good!

haha i appreciate that! means more than you know
Why don't you marry him then?
I first saw stone island being worn by the Casuals which are UK football hooligans , with some crews bringing clothes from Europe they stole during shoplifting sprees while at football matches abroad. In Scotland there was an ex hooligan who opened a shop in Aberdeen specifically catering to stylish brands , it was a peacock type thing strutting with the best gear and being the best crew. Good video i just stumbled on and was good to hear about it.
thanks for watching! yea its had quite a history from everything ive learned and heard about. appreciate the added insight!

I love fashion and I have all the really well known “Hype” brands (Bape,TNF,Off White,Yeezy) but stone island seems like a really good way to branch off into a more classier look that I want
Yea very adult look!
Paul & Shark ⚓️
U don't see the hype beast jumping on this brand I love this brand
its a great brand!
My all time favourite brand Paul & shark the knitwear and jackets are real quality
Paul and shark is the business.!! Love the make and logo is ultra cool. Really good old school label. 🍻🍻
Not hyped at all as good if not better quality still made in Italy 👍
As you say Stone Island has been a hooligan brand for a long time and in the casual clothing and hooligan scene it’s not appreciated that the so-called ‘hypebeasts’ take over the brand, just because mainly Drake caused for it to blow up. As im a football fan from the Netherlands I strongly agree with this opinion and though it’s an expensive brand it’s worn by pretty much everyone able to afford(or fake) it which ruins the exclusivity of it.
in a nutshell!
Stoney à niffauw
Good info! Just got a comment on one of my Supreme x Stone Island vid I did and recently learned some of the info you shared.
oh dope! thanks for watchin!
Your dad looks smooth in that jacket! Might wanna cop one for him ey!
“It’s kinda like supreme for people who grew up a little bit” wtf is he on about stone island and supreme are nothing alike😂
Dont mind the 15 years old that did not even live through the casual cultures glory days. What they recnetly did is watching gse on netflix and think they know something. Italians made the brand exclusive, not hooligans
Ask anyone in Scandinavia, England, France, Spain and even Italy why stone island is popular and you will get the same answer, casual culture made stone island
The clothing is not bad at all but it’s has a bad imago bc of the people who wear it.
I only know a few badge colour schemes, regular is for normal stone island products, you get one with a green border which means it’s pre 2000.
The solid colour one is the shadow project line
And the black with all White compass indicates that the piece uses new materials,
You also get frost badges and acid treated badges
appreciate the details!
Thanks for the video bro good informations and yeah

Yeah but at that time in Italy having these kinds of brands meant something, and not only for the price but because while other people wore only American and overused brand, these kids wore something that represented them
Hey Doc, your dad looks like Massimo Osti
Stone island is an impeccable brand which is massively overlooked.
preach
I literally thought you were some popular ass UA-cam you delivered a very good informational video
Mongrels claiming it's a football hooligan brand obviously dont know that back when liverpool made it to italy they ran riot terrorised and stole from the italian casual shops..... it was only ever meant to offend rival teams that didnt make it.... its since been diluted by grime/rap/hip hop and anyone that can afford it.... its a status symbol now that you have money and most holligans are not fans of it anymore for that very reason 👌👍
yea context of how you came around the brand is a big factor
In year 2040 you can wear cp company
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Does anyone know the exact name of the jacket?
The reason why hooligans started sporting expensive gear was to avoid police detection as they could not be identified as fans through team colours
yea as ive learned more about it that part makes more sense
Really love the look. Another year until I finish my masters in computer science then maybe I can cop some of these sweet stuff.

Clothing is something everone should be able to enjoy know matter what part of the world or planet they come from.
But it’s been watered down so much by 13 yr olds using mummy and daddy’s money and think they’re at the height of fashion and wannabe roadman drake showing his arrogant little prick fan base to it. You can wear what you want but it’s a disgrace when people aren’t wearing it for the right reasons.
@@willpickford2134 the right reasons? lmfao these aren't PPE
Hans Christian Cristobal lmao you know what I mean. Hypebeasts ruined it for everyone, just disrespect to the brand and it’s roots.
Fashion is often talked about as an art form, and while most of such talk is overrated, there is a certain artistry about Stone Island in the way it experiments for the sake of experimenting. At the end of the day, a jacket changing color depending on the temperature may not mean much to most consumers. But to Stone Island, that sense of achievement is real.
Stone Island’s fervent embrace by its customers is an indispensable part of the brand’s success. Its fan base is as immense and fanatical as those of football clubs. For many, collecting Stone Island is a serious endeavor and a lifelong passion.
bravo! well said
What’s that piece you have called? It’s really 🔥

The thing with stone island is that you can wash the clobber with the badge off, which keeps the logo nice and safe! Whereas supreme tees are risky to wash as the logo will eventually come off :)

My boyfriend wears Stone Island and I've bought him a few pieces over the years. It's expensive but the jackets are good quality and wear well but the knitwear is dreadful. Even when hand washed it shrinks. Definitely not worth the high price tag.

ive been asked a bunch so im def gonna look into it!
Definitely a brand worn by lads going to football and also the rave scene in the 90’s…..a lot of the hooligans discovered ecstasy and calmed down and started going raving instead of fighting every weekend! Even now if you go to watch West Ham play (my team) the supporters are wearing stone island, cp company or Lyle and Scott! London boy style! ✌🏻
Don't wash with the tag on.
good to know!
@@DoctorSoles11 really dont, it’ll rinkle it to shit!
huh ok, so basically when English wankers adapted Stoney it easily started to getting popular more and more, in 70's being a Hool was really popular and when something gains popularity it is well known in every type of social group, one of these social groups are people working as policemen. In the beginning, it was easy for the typical policeman to kind of see who is a Hool. When they've started escaping thru the crowd after fighting with their opponents that are fans of the other team, it wasn't hard to see a band of guys in colorful football shirts. As I said before, many people wore Stoney's so Hooligans used brands like stone island/Lacoste and other brands as a camouflage.
from that stand point it made sense; i guess i just couldnt picture a hooligan type transitioning into "fancy" designer wear but i dont know the european hooligan culture and just have american hardcore sports fans to compare to...which i could never see them going from wearing a jersey for example to wearing lacoste or polo or anything...again not saying i agree/disagree/think its impossible....i just couldnt picture it based on what ive seen personally haha. but good to know!
Mate you dont have a clue ahahah, in europe there are football casuals (hooligans arent really a thing anymore) who dont cause that much trouble but still kick off, casuals typically wear expensive clothes like stone island CP paul and shark etc
