Lord willing, we will bring this long-forgotten truth to the attention of Christ's church; a truth that has been put aside for too long because of ignorance or improper handling of God's word. It is a saddening thing, that so many sisters are not proudly declaring their submission to Christ and the God-ordained roles of men and women through this symbol.

Hello Cynthia, thank you for your concern, but there are a few things I need to point out. First, God's law in the context of Galatians is referring to the Mosaic law (cf 5:2-3), that is not in the same category as commands such as those found in Matthew 18 and 1Cor 11. Second, one of the problems in Galatia was that some wanted to be justified by keeping that law (5:4). That is not what we are trying to do with head coverings. We believe this is a command to the church that we obey because we have been justified. We do this out of our love for God, not because we want to contribute anything to our salvation. Lastly, if New Testament commands belong to the same category as the Mosaic law, that you seem to be implying we should live "in freedom" from, on what basis could you hold to ANY of the commands from Christ or his apostles given in the New Testament? Should we set aside things like church discipline? I hope that is not what you believe, and I hope that this has been helpful to you.

Actually there is evidence in the text for head covering being cultural. First, 1 Corinthians 11 is the only text which even talks about head coverings, which is significant because it was not mentioned in letters to other cities, though women's dress was addressed, such as in 1 Tim 2. Second, Paul begins and ends the section about head covering by calling it a custom (v. 2, 16). It is a tradition which Paul encouraged the women in Corinth to adhere to as a symbol of a woman's submission to her husband and to the Lord. This submission is a timeless requirement, but the symbol of it may change from culture to culture and from time to time. Also, the whole point of this passage is that this was one of the ways people were creating disorder in Corinth... trying to draw attention to themselves by breaking cultural norms. Look at the context (10:23-33; 11:17-21). People do the same thing today by making church into a fashion show. When a woman showed up in the Corinthian church without her head covered it demonstrated a lack of submission because she was pushing the boundaries. Women in the church today might do the same by WEARING a head covering to church in order to draw attention to themselves. It's an issue of the heart. If a woman reads 1 Cor 11 and has the (wrong) conviction that she must wear a head covering, and that is her motivation for wearing it, she is not sinning, but neither are any of the other ladies who do not wear a covering.
Also, in verse 10, it is the act of giving over authority to the man... the actual act of submission is what the grammar indicates the woman has upon the head, not a cloth covering. He makes a cultural connection when he says that nature teaches that men should not have long hair (v. 14). Every culture has different expectations for the length of men or women's hair. The Vikings considered it more manly to have long hair, but the Romans did not. Jewish culture was rather open about this; consider Samson, Absalom, etc... But what is unbiblical is for a man to dress femininely or women to dress masculinely, whatever that may look like in the particular culture (Deut 22:5). And v. 15 also calls the woman's own hair a covering for her.

This is such a wonderful video i have started to cover since a few days before 2018 Thanksgiving. It has been so wonderful seeing the changes around me men being more polite to me , holding the door etcetera and not leering. I have also seen that my relationship with God has grown stronger wanting to show him that listening to his commands are the most important thing! Also I've been wanting to dress more modestly and find myself on a regular basis wearing skirts and not pants and I have not worn pants for several weeks now because for some reason it had just made me feel like I was putting myself out there and I don't believe that's what should be done. So praise the Lord for this in which it has proven to me to be beneficial no matter how many family members disagree and no matter how many people turn me away I will always have God!!!

Cynthia Hunter you’re taking that verse out of context. Firstly do you think Paul was a self contradicting hypocrite giving out God ordained ordnances to the church then telling people to be lawless? The letter by Paul to the Galatians was addressing the law of moses vs the gospel of Jesus Christ. The law of Moses was good, but it was a shadow and was temporary. Paul was telling the Galatians that you cannot be a part of two covenants. You can only have the new covenant with God through Jesus Christ and His gospel. When Paul speaks about the law he is talking about the law of Moses not the Law of Christ Jesus. We are not to be a lawless people. There is a law of Christ which we must follow. Woman is to veil her head when she prays or prophesies.
      Galatians 4:10-12 KJVS
[10] Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. [11] I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain. [12] Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am ; for I am as ye are : ye have not injured me at all.
Paul was talking about people trying to observe Old Testament feast from the old covenant which was not for the gentiles, and is not meant to be done as if it were a law of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

This is what is proper for women who claim to have reverence for God.

12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

I grew up in the 90s and this is something I also distinctly remember in regards to my mother as well as other women I knew and would see around. I almost instinctively knew whether they were going to church or not depending on whether their head was covered or not, I didn't even know about 1 Cor 11, I was just a little kid, but it stood out as a very visible marker and many years later I think I can see the wisdom behind it. This tradition, today has almost wholesale been completely lost within the American Protestant church specifically which is somewhat disheartening.

I don't think this will ever be part of the Christian community again for various reasons. Yet, I want to be faithful to this conviction that God has given me. If a woman refuses to cover her head before praying, then her head must be shaved. That is how serious a matter this is before Almighty God.
6" If a woman does not wear a veil, let her also cut off her hair; now if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her be veiled.
7 A man, indeed, ought not to have his head veiled, for he is an image and glory of God; but woman is a glory of man.
8 For it is not man who was made from woman, but woman was made from man.

In 1 Corinthians 11:16, Paul responded to any readers who may disagree with his teaching about the use of headcoverings: "But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God." This may indicate that headcoverings were considered a standard, universal Christian symbolic practice (rather than a local cultural custom). In other words, while churches were spread out geographically and contained a diversity of cultures, they all practiced headcovering for female members.

Psalmist No such custom as for women to uncover their jaír let alone in iklesia. The newcomers to the faith were unsure as what to do. They were new to the customs. The men and women often covered their heads. The men would uncover their heads to teach and the new women were confused as to weather they should uncover theirs also when they taught. Also, the covering for women was to keep men from being distracted from their beauty as God was to receive all the glory and the women,s hair was their glory. So in iklesia they were being taught to keep their heads covered while the men were to uncover to teach and pray in front of the iklesia.

I’ve been able to just walk with Christ so much more in unity because of this amazing tradition, that sadly ended for most church’s. I think that it’s so important that when people from the church read verses unpopular with our culture like 1 Corinthians 11, that we study it. And put God’s word over what we feel knowing God’s plans are far better than our own.

Verses 5 through 7, as well as verse 13, of 1 Corinthians 11 use a form of the Greek word for "veiled", κατακαλύπτω katakalupto; this is contrasted with the Greek word περιβόλαιον peribolaion, which is mentioned in verse 15 of the same chapter, in reference to "something cast around" as with the "hair of a woman … like a mantle cast around". These separate Greek words indicate that there are thus two headcoverings that Paul states are compulsory for Christian women to wear, a cloth veil and her natural hair.

Wow. Good for him. Praise the Lord fornfaithful teachers. Such a good video.
I felt called to cover my head about two years ago and feel so much more peaceful, calm, and content when I cover my head/ hair.
I think modern "feminism" (which is extremely destructive to not only women but also to marraiges, children, families, and the church) and this message is very much needed.
Here is a bit of what I know hopefully it will help anyone if they are interested?
1 Cor 11 is pretty clear that a woman should cover or veil her head in public worship. The word for covering in 1 Corthians 11:4, 5,6,7, 13, is the word, katakalýptō, from katá, "down, and kalýptō, "to cover"-cover down, to make appropriate (complete), i.e. to wear a veil.
It is the root word used for the veil that separated the Holy of holies from the priests.
But only in vrs 15, where Paul is giving an example from nature is a different word used, "but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering."
This is different word from the others for "cover"= "peribolaion," that which is tossed around or a mantel that can be thrown around the shoulders and body (As in when a women tosses or throws her hair around).
Cover in the first few verses of 1 Cor 11, should really be translated veil as that is the proper Greek word used.
This is where we get the English saying, "Let your hair down." Becuase during the "sexual revolution" women let their hair down out of their buns, uncovered their hair and shook it back and forth. Which is very alluring to man.
If hair if the covering as some people say, can men be bald or take their hair off and on? No obviously not. This is why men take their hats off in church or at baseball games, etc.
Plus the veil or covering is it be a symbol of us coming under God's authority to the angels. And since all women have hair, that is not a symbol. We put a covering or veil on our head as a symbol that we are coming under authority to remind the fallen, and not fallen angles that we are in obedient to God's order. (As Satan rebelled because he wanted more authority).
Up until only the last two generations woman covered in Church. All of our grandmothers would have covered in church. This is why the Hutterites, Mennonites, Amish, the orthodox churches, a lot of African congratations, and Messiniac Beleivers, etc still cover their hair.
Here's some verses in the OT about head covering. Hope these help.
Isaiah 47:1-2. Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no more be called tender and delicate. Take the millstones and grind flour, "put off your veil", strip off your robe, uncover your legs, pass through the rivers.
(So as we can see, even virgins were to keep their heads covered and save their hair for their husbands. Otherwise it is like they are showing all their nakedness).
Numbers 5:18. Then the priest shall stand the woman before the LORD, "uncover the woman’s head," and put the offering for remembering in her hands, which is the grain offering of jealousy. And the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that brings a curse.
Also Genesis 20:16 says in the Hebrew
Then to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; indeed this is "a covering for her eyes" (to put back on her wedding covering) you before all who are with you and before everybody.” Thus she was rebuked.
From what I understand In Genesis 24:65. Rebekah covers herself because the bridal price has already been paid. 2 vrs later we see Isaac take Rebekah bright away into his tent. There was no wedding ceremony. Her covering herself was an outward show of her marriage to Isaac. Since they were married he was allowed to take her right away into his tent and "uncover" her.

I have to say that with head covering also comes an interest in dressing modest...I ditched the pants a few years ago and even learned to make my own long dresses. I have seen time and time again, elder's daughters and wives come to church in sensual clothing (miniskirts, form fitting, low cut shirts, even short pants) and it is not really fitting for christian ladies to wear those clothes the pagans do. @@Getvictd744 I am glad to hear this. Let me tell you why I moved away from pants....It appears that men find sensual clothing on a lady to be a form of soft porn....Once I understood that, I ditched the pants completely. Now, there are cultures where women wear loose pants and a long tunic over them and their forms are not showing too much at all, so that's totally modest (think India, Pakistan, etc.) I think in general if you're showing body forms with tight clothing, its probably not modest, use your best judgement. Definitely the tight jeans and tights are not modest and think about it, even pagans at work don't want you wearing those at most jobs, why would you wear them as a christian? Are we (we as in christian communities) dressing bellow the standards of modesty of pagans, why is that? Why is it ok to come to church in miniskirts that pagan schools don't allow nor most workplaces? Ridiculous.

YOU have to teach out of the Hebrew and Greek manuscripts. Christ is that authority, this passage is so simple, its speaking spiritual.
How can anyone listen to this?? Why wont anyone listen, it is not a custom, not cultural, just shows that people don't study from the sources rather they would study from the product only.
The head covered has zero to do with anything on her head or hair, the covering is Yeshua messiah, its talking about the fallen angels as it was in the days of Noah Jesus spoke of in the gospels, when the angels seduced the daughters of men, the (sons of God) that brought about the nephilim, naphi in the Hebrew, to keep their heads covered because they're coming back and the ministering spirits are watching, so are the fallen angels who were with Satan during his overthrow.
Rev. 12 when Micheal kicks Satan out of heaven.
The man to not have long hair is speaking that it would be a perverted act, angel and man intimately Paul said no, they're coming back for the daughters of men as Jesus said as part of how it was in the days of Noah, and will be and people are listening down these rabbit holes thinking it had to do with 💇 HAIR!!!!! 🤯😔

I often hear christians reference that “we’re under grace” which is true, but the “freedom” many feel they have under grace, seems to stray them away from the importance/beauty/sanctity of liturgy, rituals or practices. I don’t believe grace has freed us from these practices but frees us from putting our worth and salvation in such practices. Why did we let go of such God fearing traditions once grace came? It’s -now- that we can do such things out of joy and reverence and -not- enslavement.

Some have taken issue with the fact that the Greek word used for covering in verse 15 (περιβόλαιον) is a different word than the form of the word used for veiling/covering in verses 5-7 and 13 (κατακαλύπτω), the latter of which means "to cover wholly" or "to veil". Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland, John W. Keddie, contended that if simply any hair were the covering Paul was talking about, then verse 6 would read "For if the women have no hair on her head, let her also be shorn", rendering the passage to be nonsensical.

Cover your head woman, and all your sins are forgiven! Faith saves not works. There is a reason God torn that veil in half when Jesus died. like RC said, the burden of proof always rests on the person saying, oh this was just a religious custom of the day.
I have this passage is an intricate chiastic structure. Meaning Paul spent some time composing this passage.
The bottom line is trust Scripture first, instead of a whole culture who disavows the Word of God.

First of all, RC says, in order to know, scripture, really know it, I have to go out and purchase his book on the subject. I am a follower of Jesus Christ, and by the grace of God I live in a country with the literacy rate is above 95%, and even before you could get the Bible free on your smart phone, in the country I live in you could go buy a complete one at Walmart for five dollars. As a result and once again by the grace of God, I’ve read the Bible covered cover between 50 and 60 times, and one of the things I did not get out of it was that I needed RC‘s book to understand what I was reading. As I’ve said before, I have no problem with the doctrines of God sovereignty calling election. I believe in these things as much as any of these men on this panel. My problem is, and it could be my imagination, though I don’t know why I would naturally think this but, every time I stop to listen to a so-called Neo Calvinist they come across as arrogant and grumpy. I will never call myself a Calvinist, though I believe in, the aforementioned doctrines, simply because of what John Calvin allowed the city fathers of Geneva do to Michael Servetus.

Corinthians 11verse 6 is the key verse.
If a woman has no covering while assembling, or praying, then her hair should be cut off.
So hair and the covering cannot be the same thing.
Indeed, this is proven by the man not to have a 'covering' on his head when praying to God.
If hair was the 'covering' then he would have to cut his hair off each time before praying, or of course, be bald.

I have been wearing a head covering for almost 6 years now, no cutting or dyeing my hair as well and I love it. Modest attire also which helps even our beloved brothers in Christ Jesus not to have to deal with so much as well. They have it hard enough in this world with the way women dress. If head covering would be a practice of the Church then why it is that it was only tacked in Corinthians and not to the many epistles of Paul to the Churches?

    • @headcovering

Hi Aaron, in verse 15 Paul lets us know that it was the practice of every church (more on that here: www.headcoveringmovement.com/articles/why-head-coverings-reason-4-church-practice )
So he likely dealt with it in 1 Corinthians likely because he was asked about it by a letter from them. He said he wanted them to "understand" (v. 3) so they likely needed correction or clarification on this issue, especially since some in the congregation may have been contentious about it arguing that it was not required (v.16). The letters of Paul deal with specific issues, which is why you don't see it in more letters.

I heard another commenter on the head covering issue and he explained it by noting that in that city where Paul directed the letter, a highborn man would cover his head with his fancy robes to show status. And slave women were not allowed to cover their heads, unlike freeborn women. So Paul split the difference and equalized the class structure in the church by having all women cover their heads (now slave women, the lowest in society, are seen as peers to higher born women). None of the men were to cover their heads, and now highborn men cannot flaunt their status with lower born men. Like what James talks about in treating the high and low born as the same in the church, not preferencing someone based on their worldly status. Today we are so focused on the genders of the parties that maybe we have lost touch that there were other crucial components of culture, like status. Currently most of us in the West live in societies with much greater class mobility and we celebrate flaunting status in many quarters. It may be lost on us how in a more rigid society status markers could cause irreparable divisions and Paul was working out a peaceful, reasonable solution.

I am not trying to start an argument, only interested in the truth of the matter. With that said, can anyone enlighten me on what 1st Corinthians 11:16 is saying? I always understood Paul to be saying in this verse that we shouldn't argue about head coverings as "we" nor "the churches of God" have this "custom". Not only does Paul call head covering a "custom", which to me says it is not a command of God, but he also wrote that the rest of the church does not do this. So if it were truly a command of God for women to cover their heads then why did Paul acknowledge and seem to accept that the rest of the global church did not follow this practice. To me these verses speak of various things, but Paul's point is concluded by verse 16, where he appears to reaffirm that head coverings is a cultural custom not a command of God. For anyone who is willing to help provide insight into this, I thank you.

I am a firm believer in head covering, and am rather new to it...I am struggling, however, with certain teachings that state that women should cover at all times, (as opposed to only in the assembly), the reason being because we are to pray without ceasing ( if we live a lifestyle of abiding in Messiah, we are in essence praying without ceasing). But isn’t this mandate from Paul also for men.? Aren’t men also to pray without ceasing? And if that is true, and it is, then are we saying that men should never cover their heads? Men should never wear caps, hats, kippahs ( as some Messianic Jewish men do?) ... It would help me to have clarity on this.

    • @ohthankg-dforthebourgeoisi9800

That’s a good point about men never covering their heads at all. Ha! Hats for men, until recently, were a sign of status and their profession. Removing the hat was an act of humility. Christ died with his head uncovered. I cover often, mostly, practically with a hat. I don’t think you have to be over the top by keeping your head covered every single minute. I think it’s more a requirement in public worship. Back in the day proper ladies always wore a hat and, in ancient times, covered their heads with a veil, to show that they were married. Dr. Michael Heiser had a very good explanation of these verses. He mentioned that hair, at that time, was considered part of the reproductive system. ... so for fertility reasons, women were supposed to have long hair and the hair was considered part of their reproductive system so they would keep it covered. Men were supposed to have shorthair because long hair would interfere with their virility.

You can run around with a construction hat at a construction site all day, and it won't taint your manliness. But you can't wear a veil and pray for even one minute. The take away is this: You don't have to worry about headwear and hats that are worn for practical reasons

For if a man have long hair it is to his shame. Again, it is hair Paul is talking about.
Puting a cap on or making a scarf your overing, and it makes you feel more in submission to the Word and your husband, then do that.
But i am surprised the great man of God missed these verses in the only chapter that deals with this.
As a whole, we need to look to Peter when it declares to us that our adornment should be a meek and quiet Spirit, a life in faith and love, trusting our father explicitly in and for everything. And being respectful and honoring our husbands.

For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God. Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the churches of God. '

In fact it can be shown that he has prayer at-large in view by the fact that he prohibits women from even asking questions in the Church much less prophesying.
Men are to uncover their heads whenever and wherever they pray. Women are to cover their heads whenever and wherever they pray.

How is it going now? It took me at least a year to feel comfortable wearing head coverings. If she's still uncomfortable, perhaps it would help to talk to her about what wifely submission means more broadly, and why she refuses to submit to you as the husband in this way. In my case there was fear of rejection from other women combined with not enough respect for my husband. And it took multiple instances of my husband gently bringing it up. The logic clicked but the emotion took its time to follow.

1 Corinthians 11 deals with the subject of a woman and a head covering. But why do so many people choose to ignore the concluding verse? Why study in subject if you ignore the conclusion? Verse 15 says:
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is giving her for a covering.
Why should a woman insult God by placing a covering on top of the covering that He gave her?
If she does not have long hair (of which there may be various reasons such as losing all her hair in cancer treatments) then she needs a man made covering, but only if her God given covering is absent.
We have no right to just do what we want in matters that Scriptures have made very clear. Do not mock God's wonderful work and cover up that which He gave you for your covering and glory.
It would be like a young man saying, I am not going to use my strength because God said the glory of young men is their strength. They certainly don't need to be prideful because of their strength, but that certainly doesn't mean they should not use it.
It is not a matter of a woman being submissive, rather it is saying:
God, your covering that you gave me is not sufficient, so I will use a man made covering to cover up your mistake.

Read verse 15 again. Bible doesn't say that hair is covering of head. It simply say that it's given to her as covering. Covering of which thing? Because it's clear in the previous verses that head must be covered.

Moreover, if long hair is covering of head then why Paul said that if woman doesn't cover her head then she cut her hair? If hair is covering then why there is need of cutting hair?

    Sometimes I wonder.
I gave up freemasonry around which I had spun all my future plans. It was so important for me. But the Lord spoke to me and I left freemasonry. (Only because it was God who spoke. He gave me His grace to make that decision.)
Why can't people wear a simple veil? Is it that hard? Sounds like something in the scripture.
And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean? - 2 Kings 5:13

There’s not much at all that I disagree(ed) with RC on but I guess this is one.
But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.
I think that verse is taking about the head covering issue in the churches. There’s no specific requirements about covering the head.

That's an important verse. The closest antecedent to custom is "women praying uncovered". That's the custom they don't have, which confirms what he had been defending up to that point, rather than contradicting it. We have a whole video on this verse here: ua-cam.com/video/WsubZywqOeU/v-deo.html
