It's funny that the modern day church is looking for a "why" that satisfies them. We are told why (at least partially in the passage).
My pastor gave a sermon about how little God actually tells us why. It takes faith for us to follow anyways.

God said thru apostle Paul that we are to cover our heads "because of the angels" Im not exactly sure how this works, except it has to do with the rebellion of Lucifer who was the anointed cherub "that covers" before the throne of God. So we show simple submission in response to the angelic rebellion.

Why WHAT? I think if the explanation cannot be corroborated with the Bible then one is simply accepting someone's interpretation. I can only assume SDA, JW and LDS all get the same response to other doctrines (though they be wrong) that one has to obey their interpretation. This is dangerous ground people are playing here.

I would like to add my two cents here after reading this discussion. First of all I believe we should follow the teaching in 1st Corinthians 11. The main problem here is the misunderstanding of 1st Corinthians 11 altogether. I also have made an intense study of this passage, and the obvious conclusion is that Paul was referring to long hair being the covering.
The first thing one should take notice is the lack of wording required to conclude that a veil is being referred to here. The word veil or cloth is not in the text if we read from the King James version. If you read from the “modern” versions then you might get that view but not from the Textus Receptus.
I would like for you to reread the verses that allegedly refer to a veil which is 4-7 and 13. In those verses we read the words, cover, uncovered and not covered. According to scholars these are used as adverbs. Like if you were to say I am going to cover my feet. No one should be thinking of a veil just the action of being covered. What is missing in these verses are nouns that would prove the idea of veils. Since we should not be assuming anything we should be asking the question what is the thing that a woman should be covered WITH based on the passage ALONE? So if you do the math you would find that Paul refers to hair directly 3 times and then indirectly 4 times with the words shorn and shaven. So if there is no noun for the word veil or cloth yet there are 7 instances of idea of hair, then what are we to conclude? That Paul is referring to hair whether it be short or long.
But the counterargument would be that Paul is allegedly telling women to put something on. But that is not exactly true it says a woman should be covered, but he is referring to long hair based on the surrounding verses. But what about that a woman ought to be covered when praying or prophesying? The assumption is a that Paul was referring to only two instances which is not true he was merely giving us two examples. This also applies to men about being uncovered. Evidence of this is written in the forgoing verses. Paul writes that men ought not to cover because he is the image and glory of God. And then Paul goes into how woman was made for man and is the glory of the man. So it would seem that man shouldn’t be covered at any time if he is the glory and image of God. Paul also mentions that the mere observation of a praying woman should make us note how uncomely (unappealing in appearance) for a woman to be uncovered. Paul states this in a way that it should be obvious to anyone that she looks off in verse 13. He does this again in verse 14 about how shameful it looks if a man has long hair. He says it this way…
Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? KJV
So this judgement that we should make is exclusively based on observation of an “uncovered” woman as well as a long haired man. Two consecutive questions both appealing to something innate or within us. Paul is in essence saying that it should be obvious to see that something is wrong or off.
So how is it that for the women we are somehow to know within us that a woman would be unappealing in appearance without a manufactured veil? That does not seem logical especially since the word veil is never mentioned. Unless that is not what Paul is meaning but rather that if the woman was not covered in long hair (meaning her hair is short) doing something holy or godly LIKE praying or prophesying. I think most people can relate that looking at a woman with short hair does have an unappealing appearance. It naturally provokes head turns. And if there was any question Paul flat out states what he was talking about in verse 15.
So the facts are that there no nouns to use as evidence of a veil. There is evidence that Paul was using praying and prophesying as examples. Paul appeals to nature and something innate within us to judge that being uncovered or covered (meaning having short hair or long hair) should be obvious to all. So this cannot make sense with a manufactured veil.

Then I had stopped covering my head. Just recently I felt the Holy Spirit convicting me of not covering my head. I read this verse today and found this video. This was a big topic for me coming out of nearly 10 years of legalistic fundamentalism where head coverings and having long hair were mandatory for the women of our church. After many years of prayer about these verses God was gracious and showed me that this teaching on long hair and head coverings has no parallel under the OT type and shadow of Christian doctrine. Sound Christian doctrine is found in the OT blueprint such as sacrificial lamb, baptisms and out of servitude into a place of liberty and provision. This answer to these verses while utterly thrilling and liberating left me with a major headache. If they are not to be acted upon why are they there. After a couple of weeks of prayer ( so quick ) I had a verse coming to me 1 Cor 7 1..... now concerning the things whereof you wrote unto me !!!!!!! NOW....concerning the things YOU WROTE UNTO ME...... Paul covered these things because the corinthians had written to him about them. And then at the end of his discourse on their questions he finishes with his statement .....nevertheless we have no such customs neither do the churches of God. WOW!!!

Those that have come down through protestant hands and the other through Catholic. The catholic say we have no other custom The protestant say we have no such custom. It leaves believers in a quandary. I can only say what God has revealed which is that the no such custom version is correct. And it is correct because it keeps us focusing on faith on Christs works not our own. In our humanness we are so prone to religious works. Should we also be washing peoples feet ???? Once again without an OT prescribed precedent we are not obligated to make a law of it.

Paul tells women in this statement "the why" for headcovering It's "a symbol of authority on her head" - What exactly does that statement mean? Symbol is a thing that represents or stands for something else. So what does the woman's head covering stand for? It stands for God's hierarchy of authority in His Kingdom, In His creation When a woman covers her head in prayer and her work for the Lord - She is announcing to the seen and unseen world, to principalities and powers and wicked rulers in high places and to the angels, to the minions of satan and to the devil himself, "that she has submitted herself and is under the authority of God Almighty" ---- So back off satan -hands off!!! Every woman of God, especially single women without husbands should want to wear that symbol of authority on her head - because the angels are watching, and so is everyone else in the universe! Ladies make that clear distinction you are not a woman of rebellion, jezebel's daughter, you are like Ruth who left Moab and place herself under the protection and care of Almighty God. "May the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge, reward you" Ruth 2:12-13 for your humble submission to His Word and His Authority. hope this will help women who are still trying to understand this teaching..... God bless you all.

That's exactly what it is. The hierarchy of mankind created by God started in the garden of Eden and it still applies for today. Women who shaved their heads were either temple prostitutes (Gentiles) or they had been caught in adultery (as per the Mosaic Law).

Paul commands husbands "Love your wife as Christ loved the church, and gave Himself for her." You need to seek God for the grace to handle your God given position. Then "headship" is a blessing rather than a hated curse. Man up!

I’m not aware of a Bible passage that instructs Christian women to not cut their hair, so I don’t think they’re comparable. When the Bible explicitly tells us to do something like cover our heads during prayer and prophecy, that’s different than someone’s opinion that it’s better to not cut your hair. I’m pretty confident that God never told us all to never cut our hair. Maybe God would like us women to keep our hair long so we don’t look androgynous, but that’s different than never cutting it

What’s most important is the reason behind both which is love for God and his people and keeping with traditions to honor God. However in honoring God if we choose to wear a veil or give an actual kiss I’m fine with that as well.

Man is the glory of Christ. Woman is the glory of man. And a women's hair is her glory. Therefore, to show the order of submission, women are to cover their glory so only Christ's glory is shown when we are praying and prophesying.
The best explanation is to use verse 6 of 1st Corinthians 11
For if a woman does not cover, let her also have her hair cut off.
In trying to see why swapping out a covering for hair doesn't work we assume that if long hair is equal to covering then short hair would equal uncovered. Using verse 6 with cover swapped out for hair it would read:
For if a woman does not [have long hair], let her also have her hair cut off.
The very next verse says that having her hair cut or shaved is disgraceful. And if she already doesn't have long hair than she would obviously have short hair, so how would she then cut off short hair more? Shaving it? But then that's stated as disgraceful.
I hope that makes sense! 💕

Something which I believe should be mentioned more often to those who believe that hair is sufficient for a covering is that the word for covering in 1 Corinthians 11:15 (for her hair is given to her for a covering (greek: peribolaion)) is a different word than every other use of Covering in in the passage (greek: katakalyptos).
The translators did not help us out with this passage. But when we realize that entirely different words are used, we can more easily see that Paul is referring to a physical, visual symbol showing our obedience and representing God's order of creation.

It is very clear in the Bible that, 1) the covering that God is refering to is a woman's long hair - that is her covering (v. 15 KJV), and 2) this is not a commandment, it was a recommendation by the church (v. 16 KJV). I do believe that it is pleasing to God for woman and men to be distinct, men should have short hair and woman should have long hair. And there should be a difference in the way we dress (women wear skirts and dresses & men wear pants). Having said that, I also believe that these are issues between each true believer and their Savior and Lord, Jesus. There are instances in the Bible where men did have long hair. Ultimately, God looks upon the heart. But every person who wants to truly please God will do whatever He asks of them. That is the beautiful thing about our Christian faith is that we have a choice and we have individual callings. Let's not become legalistic, but let's focus on what truly is important! Having a relationship with God so close that we hear the Holy Spirit's voice speaking to us, and we willfully obey everything He asks, with sincere love for our Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ!

I also understand that we all have our personal convictions from the Lord and different cultural backgrounds.
My mom who is in India believes in Jesus but she covers her head when they pray together because of culture.
Thank you again for shining some light on this. Blessings 🙏🏻

Hi, Erika, that's a good question. This is just a video clip, but it doesn't show the whole sermon. Perhaps Ruth wanted to have a headcovering on so that she would be ready for anytime that prayer or prophesying would happen. Prayer could be group prayer, usually led by one person but joined in heart by all, and prophesying could be anytime that someone speaks directly out of God's Word, perhaps reading it out loud. Prophesying can also mean worshiping God through song. Any of those things can easily happen in a church meeting.
      Hope that helps!

God wants us to understand His Word and if we're reading something we need to properly understand the context. The scripture instructs us to get understanding. With that being said, the Lord had me to go on a fast, the Spirit led me to pray 3x's a day and would let me know when to stop, but He never told me to put on a head covering. During this fast, the Lord showed me heaven one night. My spirit was flying above it (that's the best way I can describe it). The colors are so beautiful in heaven- they are not the same as here on earth. This wouldn't be possible if I was supposed to had worn a headcovering during prayer. Not saying that God doesn't tell some people to do so.. He's just never instructed me. And I find it hard that these scriptures aren't referencing to headship, a woman being under submission to her father or husband and Christ. I also know that during the time of this teaching there were new converts who had been temple prostitutes apart of this congregation who had shaved hair bc this is what they had participated in bc 1 Corinthians 11:15 tells you that the hair is a woman's covering.

Andrea I'll pray for your understanding. Continue to seek Him. Do you remember the statement Jesus said, In that day many will come to Him and say Lord we did all these miracles and great things in Your Name. He said He will say I never knew you, you who work lawlessness. This word "lawlessness" was what they were guilty of. What is Lawless - not governed by or obedient to laws; characterized by a lack of civic order. Now look at "Ness" The suffix "-ness" means "state : condition : So what is Jesus saying? Why has He judged them as non of His? - they lived in a continual state, a condition of disobedience to His Governance, to His and His Father's laws as written is scripture for our adherence, for our instruction and obedience. For centuries Christian women followed this teaching everywhere around the world. Then
the spirit of "feminism" "Jezebel" "Rebellion" entered the church and women in the church became like women in the world , pastors moved away from the Word of God to appease the senses and appetites of "modern women" and this teaching was lost - So today many women in the church are resistant, really resistant to this. May God help you to understand... pray some more and ask for revelation and understanding my sister... God bless you today.

@@adioconnell5370 Your views are to put it simply, repugnant. I’m at a complete loss how you take Jesus’s statement on “lawlessness” and somehow twist it into a gross anti feminist warning. You do realize you are TWISTING JESUS CHRIST’s words to fit YOUR agenda. How can you possibly pretend to love and worship Jesus when you don’t even listen to what he has to say. You don’t even pay attention to how he lived his life. New Testament scholars have repeatedly made the absolute true claim that “of all founders of religions and religious sects, Jesus stands alone as THE ONE WHO DID NOT DISCRIMINATE IN SOME WAY AGAINST WOMEN.” He literally treated them as his equal. He let them be his close disciples. He let them preach his message. He speaks to them as equals when the culture FORBADE this at the time. Jesus ignored cultural norms to treat women equally.
This is all true, yet you pretend you know better than Jesus. You pretend it was actually Paul and the writers who forged letters in Paul’s name who know the REAL role of women in Jesus’s church.

(kind of long, but hope your read it, not meant in any harsh way, and given from a heart of love... and you don't have to agree with me, just thoughts to ponder...)
      Works?
James 2:26 "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."
James 3:13 "Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom."
The word "conversation" there is the Greek word: ἀναστροφή
      anastrophē
      an-as-trof-ay'
From G390; behavior: - conversation. This means manner of being, behavior, what we do.
And we have the letters to the churches in Revelation where works are brought up by Jesus Himself, and at times He commends their works or condemns their works (and what are the churches? People, people like us) , so what we do is supposed to be an "outworking" of what we believe.
In truth, it really always is anyways, yes? We do what we do in anything in life because of what
we believe - what is in our hearts. That's why we chose the music we chose, the places
we go out to, the clothes we wear, the friends we love, the things we will or won't do, the art we like...
This all stems out of what we believe about God, His Word and about ourselves... we can look
at our lives lived and really know from that so much about who we really are... That's where we get the famous phrase "actions speak louder than words"
Rev. 2:2 "I know thy works, and thy labor..."
Rev. 2:5 "Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works..."
Rev. 2:9 "I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty..."
      And there are many others.
And we have all of Hebrews 11, showing how the great men and women of faith were moved to action and obedience to God, and that they all had to exercise faith by daring to do - to act - on the Word of the Lord given. This faith driven obedience is what catapulted them forward in their relationship with God and in learning more of Who He Is.
Don't' be afraid of "works". The only kind of "works" that God rejects are:
Works directly opposing His Revealed Word
      Works done in wrong motive
      Works of the flesh.
And don't be afraid to "do" or obey the Scripture in some area just because others may not understand or may assume you are "doing" it from a wrong heart place. If God has shown you something in His Word, and you want to do it out of love and obedience for Him, take courage and run with God. You will never regret it.
As believers filled with the Holy Spirit, we will want to do the works that God has prepared in advance for us to do.
Eph 2:10 "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."
We are not just saved from something - from our sin, and God's judgment upon it
but to something - to relationship and new life with God through Jesus Christ.
A new life - and this of course involves living, yes? Living - moving through our days in connection with the Holy Spirit, and this in turn will start to look like we are "doing" some things very differently that before we knew and walked with Jesus, just by very nature of Him changing us, as we get to know Him. Our choices change, our speech, our passions, our hobbies perhaps, our morals, our shopping habits, our thought patterns...we find it all changes as we learn more from His Word and get to know His heart. Makes sense, really... true love does that to a person...
We do love to stay gazing at the cross and rejoice there, (and we can certainly bring this wonder with us each day) but we are also called to seek God and His Word and find out what what's in there, and what He has prepared for us to do. His Word invites us into relationship to "walk" with Him and that will "look" like something. It may not look cookie-cutter-the-same for everyone, but let's not pull others down for following the Scripture (and doing things that reflect what they have learned there) as best they know and according to what they understand there.
I love this community. What a huge blessing to connect with other believers, differences aside.

Neither God the Father nor Jesus Christ himself or any man or woman of God has ever said that women are men's toys. That is an evil lie. Man and wo-man are one kind, mankind, male and female man.
It is not men who want women to cover their heads when praying or prophesying, it is God.
Things are what they are, the way they are by truth. Everything functions and mal-functions in certain ways because of the True way that things exist and function.
If we think they function in any other way than they actually do then we are deceived and we will suffer the consequences of believing and implementing inferior concepts.
Certainly there are men or women who treat others as play things either physically, emotionally, or spiritually. They will reap the consequences of their words and deeds.
There will be a divine reckoning, otherwise life is not ultimately fantastic, and that is simply untenable.
Such people are not only missing out on the glory and beauty of sharing the divine privilege of unity, with God while being fragile sensitive creatures, - but they are heaping up condemnation from a Holy and righteous God who has taken the penalty of sin on himself, and is ever pouring out Truth , Power and Love upon mankind to bless us, heal us, and bring us to wholeness and maturity.
I could write a lot more regarding equivalency of men and women in support of the God's ordinance of head covering for women, and not for men, but I suspect it would be casting pearls. Take care with judgement, un-forgiveness and bitterness and all lies that ignore that Christ has paid the price for sin.

Paul tells women in this statement "the why" for headcovering It's "a symbol of authority on her head" - What exactly does that statement mean? Symbol is a thing that represents or stands for something else. So what does the woman's head covering stand for? It stands for God's hierarchy of authority in His Kingdom, In His creation When a woman covers her head in prayer and her work for the Lord - She is announcing to the seen and unseen world, to principalities and powers and wicked rulers in high places and to the angels, to the minions of satan and to the devil himself, "that she has submitted herself and is under the authority of God Almighty"
