If you watch RLCS, you might have noticed that a TON of pros use the same car design. Why is that? In this video, I find out and explain why it actually gives players a competitive advantage.

Although Rocket League items are purely cosmetic (aside from car bodies), Rocket League pros still gravitate toward the same items and even the same exact designs. In this video, I explain why Rocket League pros do that and why it actually helps them play better than they would otherwise. The reason is something that took me years to understand because I personally don't relate to it very much. However, after talking with a bunch of pros on the topic and coaching many high level players, I have learned exactly why these players do it. Surprisingly, it's not as dumb as you think.

Ok
No
hey wayton can you tell me your camera settings? and also thanks for the displates :D
It's simply design principles, like squares represent precision, speed, perfect shapes, also the colors, you want to feel powerful and most dark colors are premium and that means they want to feel "premium" and for the pros means that they are at the top, they are the best in the world. That is my opinion, but I know design can affect people's subconscious and "manipulate" people, like grabbing their attention with colors and guide their eyes with hierarchy and contrast. It's the same for brands, they need a logo that represents everything that they believe in, I don't think it's placebo, it's showing who you are as a pro through design and you can also see that when people use clothes as well, they can show their own personalities through clothes. It's not placebo, or so I believe.
ok
Wayton is the only youtuber that can entertain me about 1 car design for nearly nine minutes
ong
well he really dragged it out tbf
Sunless > wayton
Foir makes me look at one single car longer, but you've got a good point.
😂
Another thing to consider about the game, is that all of your feedback about your car is coming from your screen. So, the way the car feels is completely visual when you think about it. So when you change the way the car looks, it can change the feel as well.

Great video! 🙂
Fun story on the TW Reapers, i actually opened them in the first crate i ever opened when the crate first came out and plopped them on ever since. So thats where those came from aswell!
what is the decal?
@@Naori08 mg 88
Hi
@@Naori08 MG88
the goat
Be like Flakes.
Randomize your car every game.
I kinda believe that changing your preset can make you play better, even in a really small amount, mainly because your car gives different visual cues about its movement. For example, using black OEMs is not same as using TW reapers. One of them is clearly more visible and it can be helpful for some people. I'm not sure how big of a change it is and maybe it's actually just the placebo effect but I still think it's useful.
yh i definitely think the visual look does affect how u play and its not just placebo. I mean different designs do feel different to use
For me it is about car bodies, the hitbox doesn't make much difference for me, but the visual cues of the position of the car while air rolling makes quite a difference for me.
I agree to an extent. Certain dark decals can make the corners of the car hard to see out of your peripheral vision, making it harder to get perfect shots when you're looking at the ball, while doing an aerial etc.
That, and also the fact that the more you are used to the car, the less your brain focus on it. You will be more confortable and less distracted, easier to really be in the zone.
yeah i switch from fennec to octane and vice versa when im not feeling it
The TW wheels are there to contrast with the darker colours of the car, making it easier to distinguish your car's position during frantic moments
While this may be true, Panda posted above they were in the design cause he happened to open them in a crate lol
Maybe resets are better?
I've been using the MG-88 decal for a very long time now without even realizing it became so popular!
I'm old (39 years of age..) and us older folks prefer car designs that look more realistic and wheels/designs
that look more like cars in real life. That's why I stick to MG-88 and very basic looking decals. I also prefer
more natural looking colors. I don't like neon colors. Darker blue and dark or cherry red looks great! I hate
when cars have 20 different colors going on and nothing matches! I prefer black wheels more than any
other color in the game! So despite using the MG-88 decal for years, I don't really bother with the white
REAPER wheels. I do rock the black reaper wheels though quite a bit! I also like the black OEM wheels
and the black HSL-B wheels.
W
Cool video! I love this concepts as it shows how common superstition is, even among people we consider top tier in their field. StiI was really hoping for a Flakes shoutout though! Clearly one of the (if not the) most successful pro's that changes designs extremely often.
Surprised the topic of "car body language" was not brought up in the video. Other video games have proven that different skins (think league) give you an unfair advantage because it makes it harder for the opponents to read your movements or skillshots. And as such a darker design makes it slightly harder for opponents to read the body language of your car in opposition to a bright design that really emphasizes the outline of your car.
Ok the flip side, a darker design also makes it harder for teammates to read you so it's really a back and forth
Another decal that popped up recently completely out of the blue in the one Aztral used at the Fall Major when he totally popped off on offense the final day. He was using a blue and red Fennec with a decal I don’t know the name of but that has been used by a lot of pros since. Vatira notably has started using since the beginning of this split but changed the colors to green and pink, and then a bunch of pros, like AJG, Reysbull, and others, started using that decal with that exact color combo. It’s shown at 6:27
It's called Bluster Bar
Tbh its so mid
it’s the hulk/spiderman mobile
It's so ugly
Video idea:
"Why did the Fennec get so popular?"
You can go over chausette being the only pro, who used it after its release. Than he dominated the whole tounament (imo one of the best solo performances ever).
And what happend after, is history.
You missed a BIG thing. When playing for long stint, your view will get more and more tunnel like focussed on the ball and youll lose a bit of focus on your car control and direction. When you change car and or color, every now and then, your view kind of refreshes and you can better see your cars position at the same time as looking on the ball. So it actually DOES help, to have colorful corners of the car, to make it more easily for the eye to see the edges of the car. Just sayin. Try it out!
Wayton is the only Rocket League UA-camr who comes up with the most profound and well thought out videos based on one specific topic.
judging by both Lawler and Wayton's rooms at 7:06, it's apparently not just in game that RL players are drawn to the same design lol
How do you make a video about a car design so entertaining?! Really good work man
Fun fact: Alpha boost is longer than the default boost, meaning that in many situations mid-air, the alpha boost may block most, if not the entirety of your camera. This can get quite annoying, especially for freestylers who go for specific air dribbles under the ball
I know!
that's why I never use the nitrous boost, it's so fat it blocks the camera way too much
Thats why I use sparkles in black
@@zavi0 tw sparkles are sooooo great for freestyling
@@Lanashr black still better tho
Nice vid! The first time I even noticed a pattern in pro player designs was that Syp used the SSG decal and the reaper wheels and that always stood out to me for some reason. I also noticed early on the JKanps designs were always bad to look at haha. I remember at one point he ran a pink and lime green storm watch
As a CSGO player I can relate to this because I feel the same way about knives, some of them just make me play a certain style, faster or slower, aggressive or relaxed, etc. I know it has no impact on the mechanics of the game itself but my mind feels a difference and that does matter.
I always get excited when Wayton uploads. I always know its gonna be a cool video, thanks for your hard work!
My biggest "placebo" had got to be the one thing you left off your list. The engine sound. I'm a huge racing game player and have always relied on engine sounds to give me a good "feeling" of what my car is doing so consistent sound is the biggest key for me. I've been playing for nearly 5 years and I keep a Twinzer in my inventory JUST for the engine sound. Every preset I use that allows me to change the engine sound (except the Dominus) has the Twinzer engine sound. My second would be boost for the same reason as I almost exclusively use Comet or Lightning. I would like to see an in depth analysis on how many players use different engine sounds than the defaults for the car.
There's an argument to be made that watching a lot of pros / others that use these designs on UA-cam and Twitch can help you play better just because you are so used to seeing it. I never use the Octane but when I do it feels like i've been using it for a long time. It's also an open wheel design and that can help your eyes as your wheels are very visually important. Great video once again!
I started using the cow-topper after I got it as a drop after a 8 game loss streak, put it on and started to win.
Now the cow just feels calming and it really feels like it makes me a better players.
Also it's nice to see the small cow so calmly eating on top of my car in the most intense moments.
honestly this was such an intersting video, love to see this kind of content from the rl community. It's good to change it up. These new kinds of videos is like making a new car design, except not everyone is copying it. 😂 But seriously though, keep up the good work! 👍
I make my car as visible as possible so my teammates can see what I'm doing easier. Once I started doing this I got way more cooperation in-game (gold/plat). Probably not relevant at higher ranks but it's been helpful for me.
Superstition plays a huge part in the psychology of sports and esports. I love how you mentioned that and placebo and the fact that professionals will embrace it. Some pros have whole rituals on game days that start in the morning, it's extremely interesting and I learned a lot about it last semester. Benefits of sports management major lmao
Great video Wayton. No joke that it's been used a lot lately. Keep up the good work!
always a good day when Wayton uploads
What a video! I always look up to you for any rocket league fact. Keep your awesome videos up!
Holdup, wait a minute, somethin aint right at 2:35, just a little something.
🤨sus🤨
lmao
your vids are very entertaining how do you make a car vid entertain that much ,good work ,keep it up
This is why I really like Marc’s car design. It really stands out.
I mean a real effect could be how well you can read the shape of your car. I've noticed that it is easier for me to dribble using the octane as opposed to the fennec despite the two cars having the same hitbox, mainly because I'm used to the octane's visual cues I use to know where to put the ball. A different decal might make it harder or easier to identify locations on the car. For instance, I'd imagine that a heavily animated decal might be harder to use than one that is more static.
MG-88 although animated, doesn't change drastically. It also provides a dark outline of the car that may make it contrast more with the generally bright maps and thus may make it easier to interpret the orientation of the car. That and it also looks cool without being obnoxious, which might be why so many pro's use it
Great video Wayton👍keep it up
I just got the tw fennec with a nice huntress decal, tw standard boost and just simply driving it felt amazing (I used to use octane) so it is slightly different but mostly its just the placebo, I went up and entire rank which is crazy😂
Other 'famous' trends: the TW Mainframe craze, overlaps with White Zomba time. When Fairy was at the top there was a Fennc Yorebands preset that everyone was using because of him. There is one I still see that's been around for a bit now, Octane with TW Dissolver and red accent color for the back of the car, TW Sunburst wheels. I remember seeing Atomic using it at Worlds vs Furia but also have seen Yan and a handful of others using it before/since then.
You're thinking of bubbly, not dissolver. And yan was first pro to use on a rlcs stream I believe.
Going along with this does anyone know who used neural network first. I feel like joyo was the first I saw using it
@@erikzimmerman7722 perhaps, I'd 100% believe I got it mixed up. You can check game 1 of furia g2 at worlds playoffs and confirm, atomic was using it in that game for sure.
same with freestyling. maktuf had a design that everyone used/ uses and same with jakze. some boosts feel so different in the air aswell
production quality is chef's kiss.
What I find curious is that the MG-88 + white reapers combo is now more popular in NA (to the point where I’ve seen some people call it a “NA car design) while it actually originated in EU.
I choose my stuff based on small practical things, I play a lot of casual so like to make it obvious to myself which team colour I am when I drop into games. I've used esport decals and had to pop the menu up to check what side I'm on because I've not instantly remembered.
With boosts I used the quietest ones because I feel like I can hear other cars far better and on the flip side they might not hear me going for a demo. Like sure that probably doesn't matter that much the higher I go up but it still feels useful.
I used to exclusively use the Octane, tried to move to Fennec and failed but have tried again and like it. It's dumb but when I look back at my gameplays it looks smoother with the Fennec again it's quite placebo but it feels better feeling like a smoother player than feeling clunky.
With topper it's always the halo, because what monster doesn't use the halo?
The only boost I've ever seen that actually can make a difference is the black ion and black bubbles. there so see through alto of times you don't even notice them
excited for the next video
I feel like this is a bit like the study where they chewed gum while studying and while testing and they found that students better recalled information when they were given the same flavor of gum during the test as they had during studying.
Pros watch highlights/high level gameplay that their minds study and conceptualize. Seeing the same exact car and color could actually add some clarity when they bring back that information during a performance or practice
I love these vids ur the best wayton
Thanks for the mention in the video
love this video 🔥
Last night I actually ended up changing my graphics & camera settings, got my FPS doubled to 160FPS, and I can suddenly double tap aerial, and my controls feel much smoother. I also changed my input buffer to (CSTS i think?) and I'm able to "feel" the game much better now.
I got this same problem with *your* car design 🤣
Whenever I put on your lone wolf car preset with the green and everything, I become a mechanical genius somehow. Maybe it's because of how simple your design is and how bright the default colours are that I can identify each section of the car properly mid airoll, allowing me to quicker improvise into another mechanic in my compromised position... Or maybe it's just a placebo.
My usual go-to design is Toretto's Fast & the Furious 70's Charger, Reel Life paint for a black with flakes look, Halcyon Revolved in black wheels, Old School antenna, and Nitrous boot. Do I play better with it than if I was to use an Octane and the same loadout? Maybe or maybe not, but I enjoy playing with Dom's car a lot more. If someone wants to say I'll only ever make Champ or higher by using an Octane or Fennec then I'll either prove them wrong or happily stay where I'm at.
I really love wayton hes just perfect
I've analyzed the sound of boost a while back, at the least the ones I have, and have found some are quieter than others. I've chosen the quietest one. I think most high level players do rely on listening for an opponent and this makes for a small potential advantage. I also analyzed the hit boxes before and for the Octane hit box the Marauder visually fit the best with the Fennec coming in second. This is slightly subjective, but a curiosity why we don't see many Marauders.
OMG are you me?
I had the same observations. Audio cues are really important. I try to use the quieter boost. Also, I want my engine to be the most quiet one, so I can hear ambient sounds better. I also even considered something that Ravena did: completely remove the engine audio files: ua-cam.com/video/Did8AvGI75w/v-deo.html
Doing so, you can distinctly hear when opponents jump, boost, etc. I did not go that far, but it's something to consider.
I also noticed that the Marauder fit the octane's hitbox better. The corners are closer to the real hitbox corners. But again, I find it so ugly, I couldn't stick with it.... but who knows, I might come back to it someday.
Yes! I did the same with the engine. Also, I chose a trail I thought was the most inconspicuous.

hey wayton, played you in a 2s game yesterday. i thought it was super cool that i ran into you as i watch all of your videos, and i'm a fellow forest green digiglobe user. i have 6k+ goals on mine!
The tires made me think of this college football coach who made his players where black shoes because it made them look slower on tape, with the thinking the opposing teams wouldn't expect their on field speed because they looked slower when watching game film. So I can see how that could potentially be applied in rocket league, although the main difference being not every football player will have the exact same speed parameters
Love the vids❤
one of 1st rocket league videos I ever saw,now I'm using this car in my D2 lobbys
It's your virtual persona. The way you present yourself ingame makes a huge difference in how you feel because that's how you're percieved. Same thing with choosing clothing that fits who you are irl
why are wayton's docs so darn good
Another one i cant stop seeing is that one fennec design with anodized pearl purple and gold colors and any black wheel
I used to have the MG 88 for the octane but I traded it in for another import and never realized till now how many people in the community use it.
I dont usually comment videos but waytons a big W
Im a new RL player, started 6 months ago, i knew wayton some weeks ago and was able to go from gold to champ in a couple of weeks
Pc player here, again, keep up the good work
I do wish there was a bit more creativity though. There is so so so much out there, it’s too bad we can’t see them used at the top (or even champ+) level. Heck, trails (and engine audio) weren’t even mentioned as a customizable option in this video! I do wonder if there’d be a benefit to being different: knowing a teammate is near because their boost/engine sound different, knowing WHICH teammate is where at a fraction of a glance bc one has a flashy design. Using the hyperspace decal to judge your speed. There’s a lot to consider, and I hope to see more fleshed out designs in the future!
I ordered some displates a week ago, cant wait
Wayton: “The only item that actually makes a difference if your car body.” Me: trying to flick with a merc
When I saw that Walton posted a new video I literally screamed YAY when I saw it in my notifications
I use Serene Sakura and I always get people asking about my decal. It’s a s1 tourney decal and I like it a lot
Hey Waylon! I’m a big fan, love your videos! ❤
You should use the car design that you used for the peakset when you did the ceiling pinch it looks good👍👍
I don't think it is all just placeno. RL maps are most likel, dark and only a few are really bright. So dark designs blend better in the environment then bright ones. Same goes for the bubble boost, since it is hard to track the boost usage
i’m decent in gc and i’ve haven’t made a preset that i’ve seen a pro wear in years i love making a good looking preset that i still play great wit
Love the vids
I went from an animated decal and wheels to stock octane. It feels so much better!
No matter what the multichrome shades topper stays along with the milkshake antenna I just like it (pixelated shades)
bro i have been trying to explain this to ppl i always copy other pros designs bc it makes me feel like im good at the game so then i actually end up playing good
This makes so much sense. For years I used to use a green Nissan Skyline because I thought I could be just like JZR 😂
The placebo effect in use that stimulates a particular mindset in RL with car presets or other can be compared to pre-match rituals of professional sports players to get them in the 'zone'. If it becomes a habit, the ritual can become a powerful catalyst to boost focus, power and overall performance. As Rocket League is mostly a mental game, these kind of placebos are extremely effective in the pro scene of RL. These presets are also popularised by the virality of certain famous clips, or known players, as mentioned in the video. Overall, it is encouraged you find your own 'peakset' and I wish fellow ranked warriors well on your journey through the ranks and higher play.
I recently started using bakkesmod to use leth’s combo and I went from plat 3 to d1. Also watched your defense rotations tutorial
Okhalid fennec (all time classic), Karmine white fennec, Dark's sparkly boost also appeared
Agree with you 😃
Jeez, and I'm still trying out pro camera settings just to see if I can find one that feels right.
If I feel innaccurate (well.. more than usual) I swap to a similar body that is less bulky. Aim small, miss small. That type of thing. Placebo? Kind of, but not really. That's how I think at least. My swaps are generally WITHIN the family of the hitbox the car I was JUST using was rather than swapping to something REALLY different because I think it's the hitbox that's the issue or something like I imagine a lot of players do. But, I'm just a Gold 3 that plays for fun and competition. No grinding, no logo, no toxicity, no plays. I just figure it out in the moment and I think that is so much more fun than sweating, memorizing plays, stealing boost, and ruining controllers/relationships over a bunch of pixels.
When I got a Fennec my mindset changed completely, I thought it was a car for better players and I should play better... I remember getting something like 1 loss for every 6 or 7 games... Nowadays o just lose regularly but these first days were magical
I think having non black wheels. For example not black dieci or black oem.
And instead regular oem or any reaper wheel. Idk why I just feel like it makes you play better
the mg-88 is just a great decal! I've recently started using the Chronic MG-88 (Green/Black + Pink/Black and Sparkles instead of Alpha Boost) and it instantly gets rid of any heavy car bug i always tend to have.
just realized its showcased at 4:37 ^^
Same, one of my fav designs rn.
how tf did a video about a single car design keep me entertained? What magic did you use Wayton
I noticed when I switched to a "cleaner" car design I felt like I got better. Especially when I switched to Fennec mostly.
This happens EVERY TIME I come to UA-cam to search something up and then see a Wayton video 😭
Thanks 🙏🏼
The Skateboard deck placebo is alive and well in Rocket League.
Coming from a mental performance coach, absolutely car designs in RL contribute towards an athlete’s mindset. Feeling good about the car can contribute to “getting in the zone” or flow state. It’s kind of like the athlete and the car are one. Same reason why you see athletes in other sports have certain color shoes/cleats, certain shirts, even something like eyeblack design.
I’m still confused why apparentlyjack said items don’t affect him but he goes on rants about his play style changes with using octane and fennec.
imo fennec feels easier to dribble/flick/50 with, but octane feels faster and better for aerial play.
It was Sypical who really popularized the white reapers/saffron supernova part of the preset
that was the 1st import that i've ever gotten... so i used it all the time with the black/red and green/darkblue but with oem instead of reapers before it got popular lol
The Placebo exists, try playing one game with dracos and another with reapers, then you will see the difference of your flips or how you move
I recently bought a PC and switched from ps5 to PC. When I got bakkesmod I made a preset using very expensive items like white apexes and alpha boost. This made me go from plat 1 to diamond 2. Whenever I play without any mods revert to plat brain but I think it's the same placebo thing that's making me better.
@@tele_gram-Covert_goblue mhm yeah sure
I find switching car models gives me a better short term boost than actual decals/wheels. Every few days I'm switch between Octane, Fennec, and Dingo
When i change the wheels i totally feel the difference in the control, explain then why nothing changes
What is the pro decal called
MG-88
To me, it's basically just a tactic to jack up prices, but let's be real, some things work and some things don't. Like with the "nitrous" boost, if you know how to use it right, you can totally mess with your competitors and make yourself harder to spot.
I gotta pick up one of them Displates, look fire.
luckily us players that use other cars dont have this issue, since we barely have any decal and have to keep switching between the same standard ones
