How to RECORD AUDIO with CUBASE and OBS
A lot of people have asked me questions about my process when recording my UA-cam videos. Basically, I use OBS to capture the screen of my computer. For audio recording, I have some cool options in front of me that I can use to get the audio from my DAW (Cubase) to the screen capturing software that is OBS (free).
In this video, I share with you all of these cool options like using the "Loopback" option on your sound interface (if available) and also how you can use a free software called "Voicemeeter" (Windows only) as a communication bridge between Cubase and OBS if you don't have the "Loopback" feature on your sound interface. That can be very helpful if you want to screen capture with the audio what is coming out of your DAW to record a UA-cam video or to Live Stream online.

Wow, a year ago I wrote a comment that this setup was complicated... well I trashed that comment because today, I got a breakthrough in my Cubase/OBS setup thanks to the first half of this video! Using what you showed, I was able to setup an OBS mix going out of Cubase thru Cue channels 3/4 (no click), while using the Main for my headphones monitoring mix and including the metronome in that mix. So when I perform I can hear the click but my audience can't. So of all your OBS setup videos, this one is the winner for me! Merci Chris! 🤘🙏
i suggest to use (only windows s.o.) SAR SYNCRONOUS AUDIO ROUTER, (free asio contain driver) that keep your audio interface original audio driver inside itself, and add two virtual internal in and out. without adding latence. (and without using loopback) - SAR don't WORK only with hi buffer value, than the middle from low to high. Try low buffer, and when selected the asio drive, syncronous appear and you can route your desktop sound too.
Frankvenice Thank you for you recommendation!
I bought your Cubase tutorials a while back, Chris, so I know you're the go-to guy for all things Cubase. I just want to say a big thank you for this video. I struggled for some time and my heart sank when I found out I had to mess around in the Control Room (I used your other video for that too) and then needed yet another piece of software (Voicemeeter), but I finally got it working after following your instructions meticulously, and pausing and replaying to make sure.
Solved the mystery for me! Another brilliant video. Thanks Chris! 👍👍👍😁😁😁😎😎😎
Just really great videos all around Chris. I have learned so much and really appreciate your taking the time to help us all out!
You're welcome!
This is the 2nd time I've failed at something only to wake up to a tutorial that you made to help fix it!
Thanks a lot! I have the virtual cam plugin downloaded in OBS so I can layer my camera over my Cubase window capture and choose that as my camera for vst connect. Nice having the performer see me and my project together. :)
Thank you Chris - Great video - the missing OBS to Cubase thing was 'LOOPBACK'. There's always a hidden checkbox to find.
Thanks Chris. I'm using MR816CSX, it has no looped back features, I didn't want use the voice meter and mess up my setting on the control room as all my outputs are set and fixed with all my preferred monitoring options. Instead, I use my ipad's Irig pro duo that's been sitting on table without any use, I set it as the main input on OBS, from the cuemix in my control room I send the signal to OBS and did the screen recording, its works perfectly. Thanks again for the video.
Thanks for the video I have followed it step by step so far. I use a Roland Rubix24 as my audio interface I have loopback feature on it, but how do I get Dspmixfx to enable the loopback as you have. Is this app usable with Roalnd interface. Thanks for the help
Subbed! You just made my life really easy today! Thank you for the video. This was super easy and I had dreaded trying to route audio into OBS from Cubase from previous experiences. This is just what I needed. Thank you!
Thank you very much. You just forgot to remind about the 'Advanced' option required at the top of the 'Output' page to access the multiple audio tracks ;)
I had been searching for days to figure out why it wasn't working. The B1 thing works! What's strange is that it keeps working even if I turn it off. Well, you shouldn't try to understand, the intricacies of computer science are unfathomable...
I'm working with Windows seven and Cubase 5 😉
Great solution with Voicemeeter Banana. Very helpful, thanks Chris!! Keep on rockin'! :-)
You're the man, thanks once again!! You probably don't remember, but if you have the chance, it was cool to see how you approach reamping, how you deal with latency and potencial ground loop noise (you probably have that kind of thing sorted out anyway)! Cheers 🍻
Yes, the reamp video is on my list, hang on!
New to Cubase but also using ECAMM Live (streaming software like Wirecast/OBS) for live-streaming or recording. Many in the Ecamm community who use Mac use LOOPBACK from Rogue Ameoba for routing audio in computer. Familiar? Is it possible then to use any interface, with however many inputs into Cubase with a stereo mix out of Cubase (to stream or record) then using LOOPBACK with Cubase as audio in and LOOPBACK routing out to whatever you choose, eg. OBS, ECAMM, wherever? I’m only referring to the RogueAmoeba LOOPBACK who folks swear by in the community. Sorry if it’s a dumb question! Thanks. Subscribed too!
I watched this video and couldn’t figure out how to use the loop back in my UR44C. I’m going to watch this video over and over and hopefully I’ll get it at some point. I want to utilize control room and monitor my cubase projects while streaming them live in OBS. I want to stream my guitars with drums etc.
Hi Chris, wonderful tutorial! Hey I'm running into a weird problem with my URRT-4. When I put the loopback on then my input audio drops on inputs 1 and 2. but they don't drop on inputs 3 and 4. Is this a known issue, or by design? It's incredibly weird. Hope you can shed some light, thank you. Jeremy
Thank you so much, it helped a lot! :)
Thx Bro its very Help Full
Chris Great video. I have a question, You are using the Steinberg AXR4 Thunderbolt interface with windows. What Motherboard/Thunderbolt input are you using. I am using a MOTU interface that has both THunderbolt 2 and USB and haven't be able to get thunderbolt to be reliable. Thanks for All your info.. Laurence
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
hi dude, this is exactly what i need, however my cubase elements doesnt have the control room option....is there a way i can still do it? im using obs, but as soon as i run cubase obs wont see the audio..
Thank you, Chris. But how do you record a vocal for singing or a line/instrument IN using Voicemeeter Banana and record it into OBS? I want to do sound recording "live", and record myself laying tracks and upload to UA-cam.
Really great video. I like your content and way you describe things. Using a Daw to feed OBS is great method and bypasses all the misery of the OBS plugins since Cubase is so much better at managing sound quality.
Thanks for sharing this Chris! Everything works with the connection between Cubase, VoiceMeeter, and OBS. The only problem is that I hear my mic only from the left speaker. Does this have to do with the settings of OBS, or the settings of my RME Babyface pro interface (or the RME TotalMix FX software)?
on voicemeeter turn on MONO on your mic input, it should do the trick
worked great thanks Chris
You're welcome!
Great Chris! Thanks a lot! :)
My pleasure!
Thanks for the video! #1 Can I just use dspMixFx alone to loopback several inputs (UR44C) to OBS and skip Cubase? #2 If I select my UR44C as audio input source in OBS I immediately get levels from my mic(s); I didn't have to use loopback function. Not sure how I am routing things differently than you did in the video. OBS didn't hear your mic until you hit "loopback".
Very usefully, i used before Voice metter together with Zoom to share sound and video from Cubase, but some delays when speaking throe the mic .. In any case i did not know about the loopback directly from Audio interface (i checked now and i have that option in my Steinberg UR242) . I have to check careful together with the talkback mic from the other video. Thanks a lot for sharing these information . Cheers
Hi Chris, have seen that you have also a 4k Monitor. Me too. Do you use the hi dpi Option in Cubase in combination with Windows 10? I have problems with scaling. My monitor is 32" and the scaling factor from Windows is 150%. Cubase scales the UI then to 200%, which is a way too big. But 100% is too small. Do you have any suggestions?
Great video Chris. I will give this a shot. I also have the AXR4. Is there a way to separate the Mic audio from Cubase audio without using Voicemeeter you think? I don't want to switch to another driver, I want to keep the ASIO driver for the AXR4.
No there is not, the workaround is to use a second sound interface for the voice
Chris!!! You’re the best!!

Thank you for showing this! Quick question: For some reason OBS can't record Videos played with Cubase. So the preview of a video + Cubase sound only records the Cubase sound without showing anything besides the first frame constantly. Since Cubase has a tutorial about the video-player, there must be an easy way to record the video too. I mean easier than Installing everthing on a "Virtual Machine" and recording it's output from the OS "outside" the sandbox. :D Any Ideas?
Hi Chris. I succeeded to setup Cubase and record a video with OBS. So that's awesome. I also have the Steinberg AXR4 interface. I assigned the T on my keyboard to the Talkback button in the Control Room. But, I'm wondering how you are handling Microphone feedback? When I talk in my mic, the sound comes from my speakers too resulting in a feedback loop. Only solution I have is to use a headphone, but I don't want to do that when I record a video. How have you dealt with this?
Very cool that you also have the AXR4 :-) What I do for the feedback thing is to simply bring my Vocal Channel down in DSPmixFX from LINE 1/2 that feeds my speakers. In my case, I use LINE 5/6 for OBS and this is where I activate the LOOPBACK. So I bring my vocal channel up on LINE 5/6. Hope that helps!
@@mixdownonline I don't get it, but I figured something out which works. I have a small desktop mixer. My AXR4 output 1/2 are connected to it as well as my ADAT 1/2 output. So I can independantly control both outputs. I have the OBS cue channel output to ADAT 1/2 (on which I have the loopback enabled in the DSPmixFX mixer) and my speakers routed to Output 1/2. But now, I also have the speakers routed to ADAT 1/2 in the Matrix mixer. I can now turn down the ADAT 1/2 knob on the desktop mixer which allows me to hear only the music output from Cubase and NOT the mic output. Hence, no feedback loop occurs anymore. And OBS is recording both signals.
Not sure what you mean by turning down the vocal channel in the DSPmixFX mixer. Because when I do, OBS isn't getting any signal anymore... Still interested in some more explanation ;)
HI Chris, great info - i have an interface 2 channels (Voc & Guit) going to a stereo track in banana (the driver combines the 2 outputs) , is it possible to separate the stereo track to track 1 and 2 in OBS for mixing later? thanks for the info so far.
Thank you, but do you find audio change a lot when you listen the result of the screen recording?
Chris!! PLEASE HELP ME! haha I cannot get Cubase audio to OBS.. I don't use the control room but not sure how that would affect this. I get audio from Google chrome into OBS but not from Cubase. Do you know why?
Clearly the best video on the subject. Clear and thorough contrary to every other vid (I watched them all). Thank you Chris.
Hi Chris I have Motu 828es and I have setup Loopback but my problem is when I go to control room in Nuendo 10.3 the Cue I don`t see the Loopback channels can you please help with this problem. Thanks
Hey Chris, thanks so much for the video. I don't have 'loopback' with my Allen And Heath G_R24 interface, so i was wondering how to route a talkback (which is routed through my interface as well) into another channel in Banana. Is it possible to have separate tracks for Cubase and talkback so I can edit the levels later?
Thanks Chris, I have Focuriserite 6i6 2nd Gen no Loopback, On 3&4 I have Ext Effects (Hardware Mastering Chain). My Challenge is how should I setup Voicemeeter on Ext Effects Tab so That when I do Mastering Tutorials I can hear The Ext Plugin Inserts Signal?
That was emotional but it worked haha thanks so much for creating and uploading dude! I found the Banana VM technique to work best!
Excellent!
Dear Chris, as a big fan of your channel I want to ask you one thing: I Just purchased the UR44 which sounds great and works fine using dspMixFx-fx app but when trying to record video or streaming I get no sound. I’ve tried the built in camera app + Filmic Pro. Filmic Pro lists it as a device but when I choose it there is no sound and the app won’t record any video. Any suggestions on how to record video using the UR44 as the video + streaming source like you would be great. Thanks and cheers Jerryl
If you click on settings from the dspMixFx, you can activate the Loopback option. From that point, follow what I share in the video and you should be ok :-)
Chris Selim - Mixdown Online thanks for your fast response. This is not possible on the app for my iPhone and I don’t know why. On the pc together with the OBS Software it is possible. Also if Cubase is running at the same time there is no chance to use the DSP mixer. The loop back can only being activate in cubase under HW Settings.
hey chris, wonderful guide! but do you know how can i fix my huge latency problem?
So, I followed up until Control Room and Monitor.
I use Cubase 12 with a M-Track solo on my laptop (for traveling purposes)
anywho. I can't get OBS to pick up the audio from Cubase.
is there something I'm missing?
hi Chris, is it possible to record audio in cubase while using voicemeter banana. ?
I never tried it but I thing you would have to setup your inputs from Voicemeeter first
Thanks for the video. When I open the properties menu in obs, the only voicemeter options I have are voicemeter input, and voicemeter aux input, no outputs.. I have selected B1 on the virtual input in voicemeter. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Wow, Chris you are the best!
Do you still use direct monitoring when using loop back with dspmix? Seems like when direct monitoring is on I don't have control of the standalone dsp mixer. I'm using a UR44c. Thanks for all the help!!!
No I don't
@@mixdownonline Thanks a lot! Can't even explain how much of a help you've been these last couple weeks!
Plz answer my question , i did all you did in video but the moment i enter cubase my signal in obs is gone ! Plz help me
Hey Chris, your videos are a godsend every time. Quick question: how do monitor the metronome click while keeping it out of the OBS audio?
Thanks for the video.
Is there any way to record the voice in different track using the loopback function feature? In that case without voicemeeter?
I have UR28M audio interface tho.
Thanks Chris
Not that I know of
nice tutorial, but even with the best computer, a good soundcard and doing the thing step by step, im since 2 days trying to resolve the lagging problem. I have 32 gb of ram memory, my sound card is 2i4 focusrite and my computer is core i7. I have cubase 10.5 a good ssd hardisk. And nothing works. The problem start when i open the voice meter banana and when i change to MME (SOUNDCARD). I trie everyhing, teh WMD, THE ASIO parameter, etc. I change all the sampling rate, i went to 7168 samples until 128 samples. I open everything in order, in disorder, etc. Nothhing work. Is there something that i forgot to look ?
please I really need your help I use Cubase 5 and I use the UMC"22 interface I try to capture the Cubase screen in OBS the sound from Cubase doesn't come out, could you help me?
😮💨
¡Muy bananas 🍌 días, señor! Thank you very much for your hard work explaining us how this things work and what to consider to start! Have a nice weekend. The alternative with two interfaces looks very good, too. Good that OBS can handle inputs from different devices.
Hi man! using this setup I'm trying to record on Cubase while I'm doing a Live on Socials. But Cubase input does't recive anything. I think because Voice meter banana manage audio driver. Could you help me? Thanks fo this amazing video!!
When using voicemeeter, it will become your main sound interface in Cubase. You will need to configure Voicemeeter to manage your sound interface inputs. Never did this on my end though
thank you, Chris!
My pleasure!
Thank you very much yet again
i need to download DSPMIXFX for my setup, but any related with UMC404HD? I failed when using Voicemeeter, please help
I was JUST wondering this! You have been hitting a lot of my concerns lately! (Upgrading YOUR notifications NOW!)
By the way, when is Steinberg going to setup a site E-mail list, so we can see their sales and new product notifications?
Just create yourself a free acount on the Steinberg website, and you will get all the emails
@@mixdownonline I'm not getting anything on sales or anything. I've checked spam & everything.
Good Morning Sir
I have been following up all ur tutorials I must say they teach a lot but will love to ask you if you can do a tutorial on the Daft Punk vocal effect in cubase
What effect are you referring to... Link me a song!
If I just record my audio interface directly to obs, without all this talkback and banana's, is there's any difference regarding the quality of the recording? what's the reason you need to record it like this?
Hi friend.
I am just experimenting using Reastream as an insert on my Stereo Out but it crashes Cubase 11 even if I try to remove it or when I close the project.
Do you know any specific steps I may be missing?
Basically, I just want to use it for creating content online on UA-cam/Facebook together with OBS. However, once I insert Reastream on Stereo Out, crashes occur.
Advice will be really welcome.
Thank you.
Cubase 11.0.10, Windows 10 Pro, UR28M
I'm actually working on a video about using Reastream, That's what I use now with OBS. Funny thing, the crashing part happened to me as well when I first got Cubase11 so I stopped using it for a couple of months, but since I updated on 11.0.10 it went back to being stable again. Do you have the latest plugin version installed?
@@mixdownonline Thanks Chris. I installed the latest version (ReaPlugs VST v2.36 64-bit) as available on reaper.fm website. On Cubase VST manager window, Reastream is showing as a VST version 1.0. Not entirely sure what to do anymore. Thnks anyway.
@@mixdownonline I think I found the solution. Basically, once you add reastream in the master output or inside control room, save it as default preset from the plugin window. Hopefully it help.
Chris, could you please ask Steinberg why on earth they didn't allow Wavelab cast to handle video live streams to replace OBS?
It's like they keep missing our needs when they are just at the cusp of giving us what we need... Like they're stuck in 2014...
...it's just like FINALLY accepting that most of us don't want unnecessary dongles to break or lose (when they are unnecessary with sign ins)...
They just seem to dig their heels in like someone in senate, refusing to let go of lobbyists bribes even though its one of very few areas that most people on all sides (outside of politics) agree adamantly.
Not trying to be a jerk(I swear), I just feel that they should stop being resistant to consumer voices, and so I am sharing my thoughts here so that you be free to choose sharing or not sharing this comment with them.
This noob currently owns:
Nuendo
Cubase LE
Absolute 4
VST Connect Pro
Spectralayers 7 Pro
Wavelab 10 Pro
(Still haven't bought Kontakt Paid version)...
I also hope you or Dom would make a video explaining how to:
1.)Connect Komplete keyboard to Nuendo/Cubase without NI software/menus (Dom's maschine 3 tutorial was awesome)
2.) create Instruments on Halion
Help, i wana ask why voice talk is not taken from the Cubase channel track and activate them the monitor with the speaker on the Cubase channel to make voice talk to the obs?
You can if you want, but I don't like doing it this way. I like to have my voice on a seperate track in my video editing software
thanks for the vid, mate!
Nice sir great work
Thanks
@@mixdownonline sir can you send me caubase 10 or caubase 8 please reply me. My email id saleemshehzad540@gmail.com
You didnt say where the OBS record button is, and right now I cant see it on the obs program.
Anyone explaining this SAME thing but with ableton? And what about if using a highend ad/da convrtr not a typical interface?
Thanks a lot
I followed everything to 12:48 and I don't have playback from Cubase to OBS.
Thank you !!!
You're welcome!
I’ve been trying to get this to work for *YEARS*

Any solution for MacOs? I have cubase 10.5
Soundflower?
Yes, I think soundflower with setting up an aggregate device will do the trick ua-cam.com/video/9yUGi7ZerNk/v-deo.html
I already tested soundflower...but the only problem i was getting is that my mic input won't go trough obs.
I watched just about every single video on this topic and I STILL cannot get this working. I've followed them all step by step and still no success. I'm getting to the point where I'm trying to find someone who I can work with directly to assist me with this problem and ill pay for their time! Any Takers because I am getting frustrated?!
Since I made the video, another posted a similar video, but is using a free plugin that I was unaware of to connect Cubase to OBS and it works very well. Check it out, maybe that will help ua-cam.com/video/MeFZiMUedGo/v-deo.html
anyone can know about Steinberg UR 22 MKII. it does not work.>>> Please
i need to know how to record the screen and not the audio!!!!!! i can't get the screen to work on obs... it doesn't show...
You have to create a new source ans choose Display Capture
Hello Chris
Hello!
theres newer version of obs
The video was done with the latest version of OBS Studio. I think you're referring to Streamlabs OBS that is a new type of OBS like version designed for gamers
ba na na
not for MAC! ((((
En español por favor!!
I don't speak or understand Spanish, sorry!
CUBASE IS AWESOME! BUT OBS IS BULLSHIT! INCOMPATIBLE.
Try Cubase with Wirecast?
I work with OBS all the time, I'm sold! LOL! I tried the free version of Wirecast, I heard the big version it's pretty good though, just way too expensive for me.
