I met Joe in I think 95! My t6eacher was his student in the 70's or 80's at the Tracy school. My teacher is on his board of directors. Well he came in to teach a class. I learned more in six hours than I would have in months. Talk about cramming!!! Derek Panza was in the class and Joe picked him to hold the pads. HOLY CRAP, the look on Derek's face after getting kicked. Another thing was that he had the biggest knuckles I'd ever seen. We spoke at length about my teacher and how he liked to fight big guys and so did I. Our whole school was expert at it. Our styles were mirror image of Joe's and for good reason. I really learned to love the guy. He was a walking encyclopedia driving around a crappy old van and living on McDonald's. Amazing guy. Miss you Joe. Followed him since the PKA days. He was thee best and for good reason.

I was at a Tracy's back in the day. My instructor learned techniques from Joe Lewis and taught them to me. Lewis' techniques were pure gold and that stuff I learned then works just as well to this day. His name is on my certificate.

Great memories. This looks a lot like my test with Joe felt. I need to have that video converted. Through this we have a bond that can never be broken brother. I miss Mr. Lewis very much too.

Missed these days, nothing like some royal battles at Dojo and that feeling of going home banged up and spent.

Very impressive. Much respect to you and your heart, especially in this fight.
And it's unbelievable to me that he still barely looked winded. Just really glad that wasn't me in the ring with him because it's fights like that which make you search your soul, and sometimes, we don't like the answer we find.
Here's to us both always finding the answer we'd like.

Man, watching this brings back some memories! Joe Lewis rearranged my nose and opened it up like a water fountain the first time I sparred him back in the Fall of 1995. I got blood all over his white gi pants. I thought surely he was gonna kill me after I messed up his pants! Instead, he signed a photo for me and gave me a shirt. What a great fighter and instructor. He is sorely missed.

@@zibtihaj3213 My head instructor was his student, Allen Branch. Branch earned a 6th dan from Lewis. Lewis would come to our school sometimes twice a year to do seminars back in the 90s and early 2000s. At each seminar he sparred with whoever wanted to spar.

First time I've seen this video.
Very unique way of testing. Going a few rounds with the "master" of his fighting system. Most of the time the "master" just sit in a chair and does the grading. :) Never goes "toe to toe" with a student. Do see the benefit and like the approach. How better to truly see if the student is worthy? :)
Keeps Joe in great shape. But he was a lot older by this time. Not in his prime. Eventually I'd think Joe would meet a student that might have surprised him. Could have gotten bad. I'm assume it never did. Even if it is "light full-contact sparring".
Perhaps there was never any danger since Joe's skill/talent/experience would have saved him against any student. :) I just wonder what would have happened if he did meet that one special student.

He used to spar a younger fighter called David Tanner and some of those spars are on youtube, Joe took some big shots and was able to absorb whatever the guy threw at him

@ griner2010 up until recently I believe you already had to be a Black Belt in another system to test with Joe Lewis. The Joe Lewis Fight Systems now has a sllybus which outlines the steps you need to achieve in order to test for Black Belt with the JLFS.

Which was a harder black belt to earn, the one under Chuck Norris or the one under Joe Lewis?

In krav maga they test u for 8 hours and u do every move over and over. Most krav places have very little sparring yet they say it is the most realistic. You need to feel the power of someone else, getting used to the impact.

Lol krav maga what a joke, poor mans mma, or just scatter of techniques from Okinawa karate and other systems. Krav Maga is just collection of techniques from others systems and call some deadly nonsense.

Sparring is essentially important one's martial arts training. It is truly a test of skill.
