  • Performing a Big Band Drum Cover of a tune that was a Big Band Classic and was originally recorded in November 14, 1944 by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra for Victor on November 14, 1944 in Hollywood. The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra recorded this in 1944 and the tune was composed and arranged by Sy Oliver as well as Transcribed and Adapted by Myles Collins. The tune was much copied and adapted by other bands. much copied and adapted by other bands. This is as per the original, with the strings part. Both Alto saxes double Clarinet (for the great middle passage of Clarinets over a pair of muted Trumpets), and the lead Alto takes both Clarinet solos, which has been written out. In this chart if there no strings applicable theres an option for the Trombones to play the strings part. Likewise, the Piano solo is written out too. This is a medium to advanced chart in terms of difficulty. By far the trickiest bit is the semiquaver, semi tonal sax run which introduces the key change into the last chorus. Nimble fingers are needed. Anita O'Day recorded a vocal version with Gene Krupa, and Ted Heath used it as a stock chart. Here is Opus One the original 1944 chart recorded by The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. I'll be Playing the Roll of Buddy Rich on the drums as he was the drummer originally on the 1944 Tommy Dorsey Recording. This version was recorded by The Syd Lawrence Orchestra Under The Direction of Bandleader and Jazz Trombonist Chris Dean on the 2011 Album "Sentimental Journey."
