    Thanks for the review! Well put together video, your audio came in a bit quiet for me though. I'd love to see a render/export test between the MBP by itself and then with the eGPU plugged in to really see the difference it makes!

    Please can you do a comparison on Blender Eevee realtime rendering engine and Cycles rendering (with and without eGPU)? I'm sure that every mac/blender user is super interested on that!

    I have the orginal MacBook pro 2016 with touch bar and it only has a radeon 455 with 2gb VRAM so for me using this egpu makes a massive jump!! videos render so much quicker now with davinci resolve and with set-egpu script I can now render quickly with final cut with the egpu.

    which eGPU do you recommend based on your experience, the Blackmagic or the Razor Core X? and Is the Razor quiet as the Blackmagic?

    Can you check the Mac mini? I can’t get it to display when set up with the Mac mini connected to the eGPU and the eGPU to the monitor.

    Question Jack, how many games did you test? I noticed you put Fortnite and said the eGPU would cause a crash and you showed Fortnite freezing up. This is a common problem with Fortnite for PC platforms, so it might not have been the eGPU to blame but the game instead.

      this is a bit late but you can use amd radeon rx580 drivers on windows and use it for games

    When I was using Fortnite back then it would crash a lot but Mac OS Mojave and the new updates on fortnite make the performance better I currently have a 2017 13 inch MacBook Pro and im looking for something to game with would recommend me getting this gpu or a Alienware laptop? this is a lot cheaper but im not sure if it is worth it does anybody have any ideas on which I should purchase

    so the eGPU will replace the internal on MBP even if a display is not connected to the eGPU?

    • @JackJunior
      @JackJunior  6 років тому +1

      Yes, from what I have seen at this point it seems application specific. Some apps seem to detect it and others don’t when there is no display connected.

    I think if you on a tight budget and already invested in the 2017 15 model with the max specs minus storage, the smart thing to do is to get the eGPU only and get that significant boost. Or You can get another complete eGPU that allows you to swap out cards. Personally for me, I rather just get the BlackMagic eGPU to simply plug and play.

    I'm on a macbook 15 inch fully spect out 2013 edition and I want to upgrade. Would you recommend to buy a new macbook and this eGPU or would you recommend another setup for the same money?

    • @JackJunior
      @JackJunior  6 років тому +1

      It’s hard to say, I would only recommend the eGPU as a solution if you really have a specific need for it. In most cases a different setup like an iMac or desktop will be more economical. That being said the performance it adds to the MacBook Pro is really solid 👍🏻

    How much performance gain did you get when exporting on FCPX?!? I have heard somewhere else, that the eGPU is NOT used when exporting out of FCPX, so it puzzles me how you can get improvements there - can you please post some numbers? Thanks :)

      EzzenzDK I heard the same, and waiting for good answer. It could really improve my work on FCPX if that will work

    QUESTION: Have anyone else experience this BlackMagic eGPU with the 2017 15inch MacBook Pro? I literally brought the top of the line 15inch 2017 1 month ago and rather then upgrade to the 2018, I'm thinking of just getting the eGPU instead. It's much cheaper that way. And no, I don't care about it not being able to upgrade the graphic cards. I switch out MacBook every 2-3yrs anyways so I'm not worried about that.

    How well does this egpu work with windows bootcamp? I am going to be using bootcamp for gaming rather than trying to game on macOS.

      Brent Mifsud Doesn’t support Bootcamp at all. I think that’s the same for all eGPU’s though on a Mac though...

    Can two be daisy chained together? Will FCP use both internal and external GPUs?

    • @JackJunior
      @JackJunior  6 років тому

      Technically you can connect multiple eGPUs but utilization depends on the application. fcp doesn’t use both internal and external gpus to my understanding.

      no, you have to have 10.13.4 and up to have egpu support. And for this particular egpu you need 10.13.6

    Apple Created a eGPU with a company (BlackMagic) that specialise in cinematography and people are testing games. Test DaVinci Resolve... or Nuke FX... can someone finally test those things with software they were build for? :D

      Pesterin Pearson Games are being written (mostly) using DirectX API. Mac is OpenGL.. sure.. you can boot windows on your MacBook and play games with much better frame rate but you can’t have such a wonderful experience since it’s still just a virtualisation of a system on a system. It’s not the card that’s the problem here. It’s the MacOs itself.

    • @matthewjura3377
      @matthewjura3377 6 років тому +1

      Softwares I mentioned above are specifically optimised and written for the Mac, hence they will/should preform amazingly. That’s where this Mac should shine :)

    • @SuperKimjong
      @SuperKimjong 6 років тому +2

      Matthew Jura - it's not a virtualization of a system on a system though is it? You reboot directly into windows when installing with Bootcamp.

    • @matthewjura3377
      @matthewjura3377 6 років тому +1

      Just had an extensive read about it. You are right. Apple collaborated with Microsoft on this one making sure it works well. I am getting closer and closer to buying a MacBook for software development. I think this 2018 version could be the one :) So.., anyone has an explanation on why gaming sucks on this Radeon? Maybe the final ver of Mojave will be better optimised? What do you think?

    problem 1 macbooks are obscenely slow for the money. the performance to cost ratio is lagging severely against the pc ecosystem.
    apple's solution another "dongle" your basically spending 3500 to get 2700 performance. why not just make the initial hardware better so we dont need your dongle card.

    MAHAHAHAHA 700$ for 35 fps... a 1060 max q laptop (900$) score 58 fps, a full fat 1060 laptop score over 65 fps at about 1100-1300$, basically double the score of this dock+rx with half the price. If you buy a really good laptop with the same price of macbook (without counting the dock) you can afford i9+1070 max q, that score over 90 fps on the same benchmark, 3-4x performance of this shit overpriced dock.
    Never buy apple products if you want performance, macbook and pro's are only good for basic video editing with final cut, that have many many limitations, for other tasks such as AI, serious video rendering (davinci or premiere), modelling, gaming, and basically other gpu's accelerated workflows
