Ken this is great. The comments at the end, sell yourself short and the tool marks, those of us who are starting (even though I been tuning for 6 years) still face that. I am also glad you followed up to those statements giving a better understanding. Glad to see you in the shop again and looking forward to more great works of art.
Oh WOW!… I lost count of how many times that thing grew wings and tried to escape… I’m really glad you persevered and persuaded it to hang around till you were done with it. It turned out great!!!
Ken, the wood will always win. When that came off of the lathe the first time I was as stunned as you were! When it came of the second time, I was ducking and swearing right along with you...and I'm not even a turner! Thank you for another fine video, that vase is stunning.
I'm writing a novel and I watch YT woodworking videos as a way of procrastinating. Curiously enough, this video gave me some good advice about novel-writing. Sometimes the piece you are working on wants what it wants, and not what you want. Thank you.
Every now and then we have that piece that fights us to the end, Ken. But you persevered and like you said, it came out how it wanted to be. Even some turners don't understand when we say the wood tells us. Maybe they can't hear it. Great job, buddy!
As soon as that NSFW pour music drops, you get an instant "like." After all this time, I still giggle like a 15 year old boy every time you add it. Ok...ok... You would've gotten the like anyway.
Love the closing stuff about perfecting your craft and pricing appropriately. People in all sorts of disciplines need to hear that. A lot. I think we all tend to sell ourselves short either because we're a little insecure or because we're trying to be nice. Getting what you're worth isn't greedy or mean, it's fair.
Absolutely. I was in a store the other day and came across some beautiful cutting boards that were priced at $20-$40. I thought about buying them all and selling them for more than twice that. lol Then on the other side of the store was a display of some turned bowls that were prices pretty high as they basic looking and were very unfinished. There were tool marks and tear out everywhere on them. To tell the truth it made me a little angry, I wanted to call the guy and yell at him. Then I thought hey if someone like that then who and am I? Still like to call the guy. lol
@MoonpieCreations It's nuts. Basically, strive for perfection and get rewarded accordingly. The great stuff cheap and the bad stuff expensive is crazy though.
I live in an area where people are too cheap to pay for one of a kind unique wood art. So, my new Laguna mostly sits looking pretty. Awesome piece and good to see you back to work creating projects!
I live in the same area I guess. lol I sell most of my pieces on Etsy to people in California, New York, Oregon and Virginia. Most of those customers have purchased multiple items. I can sell an item here every now and then, but not like I can online.
Spot on! Closing on a “finished” piece is at odds with our patience. Sometimes we need to walk away and get renewed to finish the project right. Thanks for sharing your expertise and being there for your friends.
As a yarn crafter I understand that the wood talks to you, Lots of people ask me what I'm going to make with the yarn that I get and I'm always telling them the yarn will tell me in time, lol. Great job with all the setbacks that happened, hope you didn't get hurt with all the flying stuff this time,
16:38 It is the same with forging and knife making. Some of my favorite projects were what I initially thought were 'mess-ups.' Sometimes the steel decides what direction it wants to go, and sometimes, it's best to follow it there. Sometimes, I straight up mess up and send it in the wrong direction (it happens). But I think every artistic medium has its times when it tells the artist what to do with it.
WOW so much drama in one video! Love it. Sorry its at your expense Ken. Turned out amazing despite all the excitement. glad you show the issues as well as the great outcome.
I like what this project ended up being. Thanks for the advice on pricing. I’m still perfecting my work but it’s a ton better than four years ago when I started. I go to craft fairs and see what others are selling. Some of it is good but a lot could be better.
"It was at this moment that he knew...he F*Xd up." I love it! And that "mold" may be the best use ever of anything produced by Busch (gawd I drank a lot of that back in college). That being said, it is actually a good idea for a mold. Although, recently I found white "resin tape" (about 10 bucks for over 200 feet) actually works very, very well on it's own...although I do hit the pressure areas with duct tape...AND NO!!!! NOT A SECOND LEAP OFF THE LATHE!!!! That's why I always start with a 1" forstner and work my way up. A little slower but I've never had an issue.
True. But in all fairness this wood was so hard my gouge would not cut well. Carbides have their place and I normally finish and smooth the cuts after.
@MoonpieCreations I turn almost exclusively australian hardwoods, and I can't say I've ever had issues with cutting tools, except when they're not sharp enough, to me, after seeing so many blow ups because of carbide scrapers, I steer well clear
I think most Woodturners have "conversations" with every turn they do. I may start off with an idea of how I want to turn something but, inevitably, the wood has its own voice that wants to be heard...
Hey, Ken - disappointed about the whole battle with the Moon Pie manufacturers that caused you to change your channel name. It's unfortunate that they had to come after someone doing something so radically different than baking snack cakes! For my part, minor critique. I see a lot of blue pigments used when a woodturner uses resin in their project - glad this was purple instead, however I believe that it would be great to see more deep greens, rich shades of red, black, or even something like a copper pigment used in a project occasionally. Hope to maybe see something like that some time. Keep up the good work!
You’re not crazy to think the object/material sometimes dictates what it wants you to make. It applies to a lot of other art forms as well. Needlefelting, embroidery, spinning yarn, quilting, painting, drawing, and a lot of other craftworks. I don’t know how many times I wanted this project made a certain way, but had to abandon it and let the piece dictate what looked best. Also, I had a guy friend who lost a ring finger to a band saw. Please be more careful.
Fair enough. But other than using a piece of wood with the crack in it the rest were catches because I am a more aggressive turner. It's why I use a face shield. I do not take safety short cuts. I could have used a smaller forstner bit, but hey I was way on the other side of the lathe when it came off. But I don't want you to think I am dismissing your concerns. I appreciate it.

Thanks Chris. I am hoping I can keep up the motivation.
I’m glad to see you putting some videos out again I’ve missed watching them.
Thanks. I'm hoping I can finish the next one in time. Gonna be gone next week, so it will be close.
Oh WOW!… I lost count of how many times that thing grew wings and tried to escape… I’m really glad you persevered and persuaded it to hang around till you were done with it. It turned out great!!!
I really like the statement it's not rustic it's just not finshed. So true. Thanks for taking us along 👍.
Thanks for watching!
Another fine turn Ken.
Thank you.
That's really nice, Ken. You're right about the wood. It will tell you what it wants to be and it's best not to fight it.

Thank you. I really should have looked that piece of wood over better. I could have used a pipe clamp to hold it together. But hey no harm no foul.
You dodged a bullet with the bandsaw and with the flying wood x2. I love watching your videos and the products that you make. ~Kevin
Thank you Kevin

Glad it was helpful! That is a great take on that.
Ken, great job with this piece. It turned out awesome. And I LOVE your ending.
That epoxy finish looks awesome! I love the way the vase looks. The wood and epoxy hybrid look is one that I'm a huge fan of.
Glad you like it! I use TotalBoat table top. It levels out so much easier.

I turn pens and starting to turn bowls. I've sold some to friends and family but I admit I tend to sell myself short
Stop it!!! haha. How much do you sell them for. I have many friends who do pens. They sell anywhere between $30 to $120 each.
@@MoonpieCreations :) I sell my pens between $35 and $80 depending on style of pen and type of wood. I might have to raise my prices haha
