    Very clear explanation! You've told us you're not a computer expert, but at least you've shown us you're doing it more carefully than most people. Well done!

    Love the video because it helps me to put new ram in. The bad part your using plastic gloves that have the same potential as carpet. Dry places have a big problem with static all you need to ground your self and have moist not wet fingers. Dry area same thing good ground and moist fingers. If you really have a problem (really dry air say in a desert area) have a shower or just wash your hands making sure you have a leakage strap (they have a 1 a resistor to dissipate the charge). Most circuits and components allow for this but some are really sensitive. If you and your components are not at the same level that's what kills your electronics. Some are more robust than others I've not heard of a resistor that died due to static discharge, Maybe an emp but they are as dumb as we are and the processors are the same, what gets (and you don't want) is the eeprom to be fried, after that no matter whats attached it's just junk. In a moist atmosphere static is a low problem, in a dry one I don't think any components could handle several thousands of volts. Amps also depends on humidity, want to question that go out in a thunder storm if your lucky you might make it back, though there are records of people that have been chased by lightning even in their homes. If people can't handle it there's no hope for electronics. Probably going to spell this wrong look for Lichtenstein patterns. They are not deadly if you survive but if your still alive you have proof you've be hit by lightning. The problem being as most computers (soft or hardware) You can loose things in some peoples case a major change in personality. It doesn't cover everything, hardware can be made to cope, normal public stuff is borderline, people have no choice. We are what we are and for now that's not going to change. Sorry for the long rant somehow somebody growled me and I haven't hit the comment button yet. NOT good.

      Glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback. It was long but I get you. I used latex (rubber) gloves as an insulator. Also from sweat or other contaminants. The same principal as the plastic sleeve on copper wires. A layer of protection. Yes agree washing your hands or having a shower helps remove the static electricity from the body. Also anti-static wrist strap. Use whatever works for you. I was just being extra careful.
      I did corporate business work for big tech companies. ESD standards were in place or you lose your job. My friend was the manager of a hardware repair team. They had 60% failure rate on computer and phone repairs. That means 60% of devices they touched came back as faulty. He made the team follow ESD protection standards, or you lose your job. Wash your hands, and ground yourself to the device first. Then wear gloves or anti-static wrist strap. Failure rate declined to 5%. One guy didn't wear gloves and lost his job. No glove, no love 😂✌️

    Upgrading the RAM, HDD to SSD and reinstalling the programs can make an old laptop run like new

    • @BAdventures
      @BAdventures  8 років тому +1

      Yes there are few upgrades you can do to a laptop. Luckily RAM and SSD can both be done on mine. Both make a significant difference to speed and productivity. Can't wait to try an SSD, will probably be faster than before. Thanks for watching =)

    Best thing you can do to these laptops is installing a SSD, it will start and run like a new one. My SA series is now 7 years old and works nice just with this change!!!

      Yes a SSD is the best upgrade to any computer. Faster all round performance, less heat and electricity, lighter weight, and no moving parts. Link below.

      Hey nice one, that is a similar laptop. Really helps when the memory banks are easy to access. The upgrade made a big difference after so many years lol. Thanks for sharing =)

    Yes, it was a good idea to stress the handling of the memory sticks. It doesn't take much to zap them.
    The video reminds me of the similar upgrade I did to the memory in my Sony Vaio laptop too (a few years back). It has 12GB of RAM. I need to clean it though (and if the laptop has Sony written on it, that's a sign of it's age).

      Thank you appreciate the feedback. It's like bacteria for doctors in the old days. No one sanitised and patients got infections after operations or treatment. A doctor started sanitising everything before and after operations. He had a much higher success rate. Now sanitising is a basic medical standard.
      Same principals for ESD. I simply washed my hands and wore gloves. I'd rather keep that standard than ruin a computer or new parts.
      Hey that's cool yours is still going strong. I also upgraded a Sony VAIO Fit to 12GB RAM, link below.

    Very good instructions. now I can do it myself :) . but I have difficulty finding compatible SSD and RAM for my laptop which I bought years ago. it's a VPCF126FM. could you please help me where I can find compatible models?. thanks

    • @BAdventures
      @BAdventures  7 місяців тому

      Glad it helped. I check your model and looks like it's still a good Intel Core i7 CPU. The biggest performance upgrade is from old SATA disk to SSD. It's a high speed hard drive. Hands down the best upgrade! It's a different computer, better than new. Shop around online, Samsung EVO 500GB SSD A$85.
      I also just found a RAM kit on Amazon AUS for $24. That's 8GB (2x4GB) RAM DDR3L Laptop RAM 1600MHz. Double check your current RAM type and speed, look inside your RAM bank. Maybe yours is 1333Mhz speed. Or go for the SSD first. Hope that helps.

      So far so good. Noticeably faster and compatibility is fine. Was tempted to put in more RAM but didn't want to risk complications. Windows 10 will recognise huge amounts of RAM. But just used the manufacturer recommendation and specification. Yes next upgrade is the the old hard drive to SSD. Just need to make time to do it. Thanks for watching =)

    Update from my previous:
    I have a VPCS111FM and a VPCS131FM.
    Into the 111, I placed.
    2 of Kingston 4GB DDR3 1066MHz PC3-8500 204p non-ECC Unbuffered SoDIMM Rank2 OEM Memory KVR1066D3S7/4G
    I did not specifically order the above as a kit, but I noticed on each of the stickers it stated "kit of 2".
    Into the 131, I placed.
    Crucial 8GB CT51264BF160B.C16FKR 2X4GB DDR3L 2RX8 1600MHz PC3L-12800S 204pin Laptop Memory RAM 1.35V CL11
    Before placing the cards into either machine, system info indicated a total of 4GB. On the the 111, I did a wmic memorychip get devicelocator, capacity. It told me I had 2 SODIMMs of 2GB each (expected). I did not do that before replacing the memory in the 131, however, the chips I pulled out of that one indicated they were each 2GB on the sticker (same for the 111).
    After installing the 2 4GB cards in each machine, system info still says I have 4GB. wmic memorychip get devicelocator, capacity says I have only 1 SODIMM now of 4GB (true for each). I have re-inserted the cards in the 131 several times, hoping one was just loose. Because I am getting the same result for each machine, it seems wildly unlikely that it is the way the cards are inserted. They are clicking in securely.
    My bios indicates 4GB of memory. I don't know if it is reading that from the cards, or if that is a limit it is enforcing. If it is the latter, I don't know how to change it. The internet also suggested I remove the CMOS battery. I don't know where that is.
    Ideas?

      My experience: I updated my OS to Windows 10. I took out the old DRAM. Then installed two (2) sticks of Samsung 4GB DDR3 1066MHz PC3-8500 laptop memory = 8GB total. Computer recognised them on reboot, and worked fine since. That was the recommended spec for memory and upgrade.
      I think you need to clear your mind and start again. What is your goal for each laptop?
      Model 111 upgrade memory DDR3 1066MHz PC3-8500 to 8GB total?
      Model 131 upgrade memory DDR3L 1600MHz PC3L-12800S to 8GB total?
      What OS are you running on each laptop?
      I think you might have the wrong specs of DRAM. Neither laptop is recognising each stick properly. I've seen some websites recommend different speeds for each laptop.
      Check the original spec of memory that came with each laptop and go from there.
      Crucial Memory guide below says they can both use DDR3L-1600 1.35V. Note "L" stands for low voltage. The sick of RAM usually has a sticker on it stating "PC3L". Maybe it's frequency (speed), or voltage is not compatible.
      Have you tried swapping kits in the laptop models?
      Checked if the Crucial and Kingston kits work in the opposite model laptop?
      I suspect the Kingston sticks are faulty, or mislabelled. Maybe sold lower capacity. I'm confused if you wanted 4GB or 8GB total?
      Might have to do trial and error with different memory kits. Or get help from your local computer store or technician. For what it's worth I recommend Samsung memory.
      Both Sony VAIO VPCS131FM and 111FM seem to use Memory Type/Speed: DDR3/1066MHz, Max 8GB total (2 sticks of 4GB).

      Crucial Memory Guide (may not be accurate):
      Sony VAIO VPCS111FM, 2 sticks of 4GB DDR3L-1600 SODIMM 1.35V = 8GB total.
      Note: "L" designation = low voltage.

      Sony VAIO VPCS131FM, 2 sticks of 4GB DDR3L-1600 SODIMM 1.35V = 8GB total.

      Thank you for a detailed response. You’ve given me some things to try. I was writing a detailed reply, but I just now tried switching the cards. The 111 now has 8GB :). The 131 still has 4. I guess that means I will buy the Samsung cards you used, instead of the Kingston. Thanks for your help.

      Well done! You're making progress. The 111 is upgraded now.

      I understand. Yes I use Samsung flash memory. Plus the 'Migration' software makes it easier. The models I recommend for you:
      Samsung 860 QVO 1TB 2.5" SSD (affordable, not as fast as EVO, not for hard use)
      Samsung 860 EVO 1TB 2.5" SSD (excellent, fast & reliable)
      The part will click into the 2.5" SATA connection. See the install tutorial below. I understand how daunting it can be. Give it a try and don't be afraid to get help 😉👍

Opened backup and reinserted second card (first seemed secure) and it boots, but only says 4 GB memory. Is it more likely that I didn't insert it right, or that I need to configure my machine to recognize it?

      An internet search I just did suggests that because I bought two individual 4gb sticks, instead of an 8gb kit of two 4gb sticks, the sticks I bought might not work together. Does this sound right?

    • @BAdventures
      @BAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      Sometimes the motherboard, or BIOS programming can be locked by the OEM. They can limit maximum upgrade. But if you have similar model VAIO they can usually upgrade. Check your exact model number with manufacturer recommendation.
      Regarding OS, yes it needs at least Windows 7, 64 bit to recognise more RAM. You should be on Win10. Can find it for free or very affordable license $10-$15.
      Maybe why your computer will only recognise 4GB total memory?
      Not installed properly also possible. Sometimes need to reinsert for break-in or remove grittiness. But sounds like you already checked.
      Even the same memory kit can be a different manufacturing batch, but often similar frequency. Meaning each stick (module) is not always the exact same, even when bought in a kit. Maybe 1 stick is faulty or not compatible. If the above points have not helped, keep the working stick, and send the other stick back.
      Hope that helps ✌️

      That's very similar to my model in this video. Intel Core i5-2410M Processor 2.30-2.9 GHz. Sounds very affordable. You would have to upgrade the RAM, and hard drive to SSD. That way it's 'useable' in 2021 for basic work.
      Maybe too old for heavier work loads. Not sure how hard you will push it. I would recommend a newer Intel Core i7 desktop or laptop. Can find something else 2nd hand.

    I have E series laptop model SVE151A11W. My laptop has began slow and sometimes unresponsive. Currently laptop has 2+2gb of Ram .Can I upgrade its Ram to 8+8 gb?

    • @BAdventures
      @BAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      Regarding slow performance, that's usually from the old SATA hard disc drive. The physical spinning disc inside is damaged and worn out. If you really want to keep it, I would recommend an SSD. A high speed drive with no moving parts. SSD is the best upgrade for an old slow computer.
      Regarding memory, NO you cannot use 8+8GB configuration. A guy did it on the same model as my VAIO-S in this video. He did trial and error testing different sticks of DRAM, and had to reprogram the computer. OEM manufacturers often restrict both the BIOS programming, and physical mainboard. Conclusion was to follow manufacturer specs. It was not worth 1 month trying to reprogram and find the exact compatible sticks of memory. Better to upgrade RAM 4+4 like I did in the video.

      SSD Install Sony VAIO Fit Core-i7 ua-cam.com/video/09Zc279GQbA/v-deo.html
      A better option is a newer computer. Get a slightly used computer with newer and better processors: Intel Core i7, or AMD Ryzen 7.
      I checked that model. What's the product number? What CPU does it have?
      Always check the CPU spec first. The processor is the most important part.

    • @BAdventures

      Search you model number on the manufacturer website. Or use the Crucial Memory website. Often on OEM computers the motherboard and BIOS are locked. So it will only recognise a certain amount of RAM, at the recommended type and speed. If you put more than recommended or wrong type the computer simply won't work. Won't load the OS and you get a black screen. This laptop in the video could be upgraded to 8GB total. DDR3-1066Mhz, 204 pin PC3 8500 laptop memory.

    is there any way t upgrade ram up to 16GB?

    • @BAdventures
      @BAdventures  2 роки тому

      Yes it's possible, but not worth it. I read an article where another owner did it as a school assignment. Took 1 month to reprogram. He experimented with different memory kits until he got it working with 16GB total memory. Sometimes OEM manufacturers put a factory set limit to memory / RAM. Both the BIOS, and or mainboard, can be locked. Though technically it could max out at 16GB total memory, it was not designed that way from factory. This can cause it to be unstable and crash. Very annoying and frustrating later. Conclusion, follow manufacturer specifications.
      The BEST performance upgrade for an old computer is replace the old SATA hard drive with SSD. Faster everything. Examples below.

    • @BAdventures
      @BAdventures  4 роки тому

      I think it's too old already. OEM manufacturers often put a restriction on the main-board and the BIOS. So there's a limit on RAM. Maybe it cannot accept that amount, or type of RAM. Give me the exact model number and we can look it up.
      I checked my specific model number first. RAM could be upgraded to 8GB RAM total. Also certain type of memory. I'm also running Windows 10, which can recognise more RAM than older versions.
      In your case I would revert back to the original RAM it had. Save up and get a newer computer. Get a refund for the new RAM.

    • @BAdventures

      That's a very old model. Run your WiFi card driver updates, and Windows Update. Sounds more like your internet network or service provider is having issues.

      Welcome to the channel. No not worth it. The CPU and computer is too old. Save up and get a newer machine. I recommend the latest AMD Ryzen desktop or laptop. Some ideas below.

    what happens when you remove the ram before the battery?

    • @BAdventures
      @BAdventures  4 роки тому

      You can permanently damage parts. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) occurs when differently-charged objects are brought close together or when the dielectric between them breaks down, often creating a visible spark.
      I removed the battery power source from the laptop; Washed my hands to remove static from my body; and wore gloves as final protector from ESD and contaminants like sweat and grime. No glove no love 😂✌️

    When i check my current ram speed on sony website it says 1333Mhz and after using the Crucial tool they recommend one that has 1600 Mhz speed. Would that be ok in adding to the current ram stick i already have on my Sony Vaio vpceh2n1e

    • @BAdventures
      @BAdventures  7 років тому

      Good question. The problem is you don't know until you test it on that specific model with the specific RAM. Another user with an almost identical Sony VAIO to mine tried using faster speed RAM. It did not work initially. He went on to test a few different brands until he found a generic stick of RAM that worked. Long story short it had to do with the how many memory modules (black chips) were on a stick of RAM. So if the original had 8 black chips, the upgrade also had to have 8 black chips. If there were too many, it changed the way the computer recognises the RAM and speed. So yes it is possible to upgrade RAM speed, but you will have to test what works or not. I stuck to manufacturers recommended speed to keep it simple. Hope that helps =)

    My Vaio laptop has 4 GB ddr3 sodimm. Is it alright to change it to either to 8 or 16 GB.

    • @BAdventures
      @BAdventures  5 років тому

      Yes that's what I showed in the video. I swapped out 4GB to 8GB of RAM. Most motherboards or BIOS will have a limit. Open the memory bank area and see what RAM is already inside. Look up your laptop model number on Crucial and Manufacturers website. It's not perfect but gives you a guide.
      The best upgrade you can do is replacing the old SATA hard drive with SSD.

      I upgraded to Windows 10 and ran all the updates. Then did a defrag to make sure everything was clean. This was also for the SSD upgrade (next video). This laptop is still going strong. Hope that helps 😉

    • @BAdventures
      @BAdventures  6 років тому +1

      Not anymore. Use to play StarCraft years ago. I'm sure games would run faster with more RAM. Everything has to access the hard drive, including the OS. So I recommend the SSD if you want real permanence gains.

He enforced strict ESD standards of washing their hands and wearing gloves. The failure rate dropped to 10%. The guy who didn't wear gloves got fired. No glove, no love 😂✌️

      A friend had a similar model. Ok does your RAM bank area look like mine? The Ram sticks are usually held in place by a left and right tabs. They look like metal side rails. You push the tabs down and outward, away from the RAM sticks. Usually they do not require much force. Watch that part of the video again at (7:26) on a computer or larger screen device. This is usually standard on Sony VAIO laptops. So if your RAM is stuck, get help. You don't want to damage your computer.

    • @Jlynnxx
      @Jlynnxx 7 років тому

      Yes it looks exactly the same. I've used a decent amount of force to where something should be happening but nothing. I'm going to have a friend take a look at it some time because mines in serious need of the upgrade lol.
      Thanks for the help though. Great video!

      Maybe I misspoke in the video. Stuff happens over time. There are numerous other factors I didn't want to get distracted on. Programs and apps use more RAM as they get more powerful each year. Different manufacturing methods and quality control. Improper handling during maintenance and repair. You get the idea.
      This RAM upgrade was a success and I'm still using this Sony VAIO S 13" laptop.
