Dominate the Grip Battle to Break Full Guard as a BJJ White Belt

  • When stuck inside someone's Full Guard in BJJ. What should you be going for? Breaking grips, passing, posture, etc?
This is the question that comes to us from Jordan Patricio who is having issues working out of Full Guard during Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.
In this video I touch on the basic prioritization with grip breaking, posturing up and passing the Guard.
One of the big ideas I touch on in the video is the idea of dominating grips after their broken. This way it stops the person from reestablishing their grips again.
And the second big idea is to view the Full Guard as a bad position for the person on top. And as such. When you're on top. Look at it as an escape situation instead of a offensive situation.
This mindset shift to breaking and passing the guard helped me to slow down in this position.
If you're in these situations in BJJ. I hope this video is helpful.

I have been noticing the same issues. No-Gi and I can move much more freely and focus on passing, but breaking grips and posturing is extremely difficult while wearing a Gi.The hardest grip I have found to deal with is when they focus on my sleeves, chest grip is fairly easy for me to deal with but the low sleeve (like around the wrist) seems to be the biggest problem I've faced so far in BJJ.

Yo Chewie, I'm just about to go to my second bjj class. So I wanted to thank you and your crew (chad, adam etc.), cause I've been watching your stuff for a while, been doing some self-defense for a year where we did some defensive ground play, but my interest for bjj has grown a lot since the discovery of this channel. Keep up the good work and continue being an inspiration to newbies

Chewy some videos on how big guys 6'1, 280 can slow down the game of little guys 5'9 150 when rolling. Early grips to achieve and ways to start. I feel people just jump right around me and into my side control.

I sprained my index finger, would you recommend I skip rolling for a few weeks until I heal or continue to roll with a partner but take it easy and ask them to as well? (White belt)

Keep rolling just take it easy until you get better

You can tape it to help but don't always tape it as you want your strength to improve rather than rely on the tape helping.
So tape for a few sessions, then ease back into rolling without the tape while taking it easy on grip fighting. after a couple of weeks you'll be better and stronger.
      ymmv

Great vid as always man! Great stuff! I wander what would be your tips regarding the grip fight for someone who's playing guard? What would your priorities? Your go to grips? Thanks for the great work and info! Oss!!

Man chewy you are always right on time!! I found myself stuck in guard with one of my rolling partners today, and just couldnt get out although me being 140lbs and him being 200lbs played a big part. Thank you for the tip about controlling the dominate hand i will definitely implement that more often ive actually never been tought that tip befor.

I’m new to BJJ and was wondering if it is illegal to do the “leBell lock” not the standing version

If you make your opponent tap by twisting his neck it would be an illegal neck crank, in IBJJF-rules. If you find yourself in the position you mentioned just go for the Omoplata. Don't be the guy that messes up peoples' spines.

Hey, i need help. I try to close my guard alot, but sometimes my legs arent long enough and i cant. Any tips?

    • @AlexWehpunkt
      @AlexWehpunkt 5 років тому

      - sometimes, "Moving up", meaning your legs are more under his armpits than around his waist can be helpful. You might want to dig into "high closed guard" or even "pit stop position"
      - Learn other guard forms! It does at first sound dumb, but sometimes our bodies aren't meant to play the style we like to play. Me for example loved Spider Guard as a white belt, but I often can't hold the grips more than one round of rolling because of the pain I developed. Now I switched to X and single X (which also has the benefit of being more usefull with NoGi) as my "go to-Guard" and only apply Spider when it "falls to me".
      Hope it helped :)
