Composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Shueh-li Ong’s 5th album, MissOriented Metaphor, is led by the theremin, synthesizer and tin whistle. Nicknamed “the concerto”, MissOM4 has six movements of various sections with contrasting tempi, the appearance of motivic repetition and variation, and solo cadenzas. But it is not a classical album.
MissOM4 features Shueh-li’s undeniable writing, performing and production style, and her penchant for sound design and odd time-signatures in Jazz Fusion, Rock, Prog, Electronic and other exotic pieces.
Writing of the concerto began in 2018 as Shueh-li focused on documenting and refining her theremin techniques in new work. Shueh-li continues to promote the theremin as an instrument able to take center stage and not just a gimmick for horror and sci-fi movies. The concerto also accommodated her continual experimentation with interactive synth performance techniques.
When it came time to find the musical muscle with distinct personalities that Shueh-li imagined would complement her production, the inimitable Dean Parks, bassist Brian Mooney of the Mahavishnu Project, and drummer Jake Siberon and bassist John Tuohy of prog-metal band Mile Marker Zero, came to play.
“These musicians had to be genre malleable, able to effortlessly sight read and navigate time-signature changes, stay true to my musical intent and offer their own twist on my notes”, said Shueh-li.
A tall order, but Dean had previously worked on Shueh-li’s music, “I wrote parts to extract from Dean’s uncanny ability to manifest different qualities with the one guitar. You can tell I’m a fan!” Brian had worked on her early video demos as well as in concert, “Brian constantly listens to new music and is not afraid to let this influence his contribution.”
MissOM4 was released via livestream where fans and friends came together to celebrate. Thanks to owner of Nelco Comics and dear friend, Philip Nelson, for offering this venue in San Antonio for the event.
