- Residents of the DR Congo city of Goma were told to evacuate Thursday as officials warned that the nearby Mount Nyiragongo volcano might erupt for a second time at any moment. Constant Ndima Kongba, the military governor of the North Kivu province, said magma was detected underneath the city and adjoining Lake Kivu, citing seismic and ground deformation data. The molten rock that erupts from volcanoes normally stays below the earth's crust.
The volcano is about 6 miles (9.7 kilometers) north of Goma, home to more than 600,000 people. A total of nearly 2 million people live in Goma's greater urban area. The strato-volcano, which is nearly 3,500 meters (11,500 feet) high, erupted over the weekend, killing at least 31 people and leaving 20,000 homeless. Another 40 people are still missing from Saturday. Hundreds of aftershocks followed, destroying more buildings in the process.
Mount Nyiragongo is Africa's most active volcano. Before last Saturday, Nyiragongo last erupted in January 2002, killing more than 100 people and covering almost all of eastern Goma with lava, including half of the airport's landing strip. More than 100,000 were left homeless in the aftermath.

Even if members of the government want to help they aren't actually in control of Congo, so it seems a moot point as to why the government isn't helping.

@@sakurakou2009 volcanos are hard to predict, you need advanced technology, researchers etc. Plus, even if they found out it was about to erupt and warned the government, do you think the people would have left before they actually saw it? It's like climate change and global warming, people don't listen to experts much

Pilots, Captains of ships, naval relief... CRUISE SHIPS...... just sayin. thre are all these resources around the world. We should USE THEM.

Humanitarian organisations should come in handy to evacuate the vulnerable immediately. The elderly, disabled, children and pregnant mothers need food and medication with shelter. The government and this organisations must set up aid as soon as now.

Organizations are corrupt. They raised funds and giving 10% of it to the charity while they took 90% of it for themselves.
@@ungax4591 Most of these charities especially the Western ones caused a lot of problems for African countries. Kidnapping young children to sell away for adoption. Collecting used clothing in the West and dumping them across Africa hurting the local textile industries. They even promoted Africans to use solar panels in 90s when the barely worked. Ironically its only with the rise of China as tech manufacturing giant did things improve in Africa through access to cheap Chinese phones allowing almost everybody to have free online banking and countries access to credit with less limitations compared to the IMF. Even with claims of China's debt trap most African countries still prefer to do business with them than the West.

It is the most active volcano in Africa. including twice in the last three decades with costs of hundreds of lives. This was not a secret. The fleeing should have been done in what we would call "history".

@@eduardo42897 because of it's resources, which is estimated to be worth 24 trillion US dollars. The very phone/laptop or whatever technological device you have in your hand right now is most likely made from the metals sourced in that country.
It makes me sad...the DRC gov't and the UN agencies has not yet planned to relocate the residents of the town to another location yet...despite the recurrent natural phenomenon in that particular area. If they can't even arrange as simple as transportation, how else do they serve the public?!

On average there are apparently 50 eruptions in a normal year. Last year there were apparently 17. Have seen at least 4 in the last 2 weeks so it seems like there is a lot of activity this year. Huge earthquakes in China as well...

the town mostly grew because of civil war. it not like they wanted to live there but was pushed towards there as it was safe and also it the hub for the world health organization for east congo and un peace keeping forces for eastern congo as it has the biggest airport
It is very common to live near volcanoes, they provide rich soil and do not erupt often, making the benefits outweigh the costs for many people. Many more people live in other areas like on coasts and in tornado alley where disasters happen much more often

I remember watching a documentary on Mt. Nyiragongo in Geology class; it showed people coming back and rebuilting their homes over the lava flows. They can't afford to move anywhere else and the government doesn't really do much to help.
