    Fun Fact: Volcanoes have a major impact on climate. For example, the massive eruption of Mt. Pinatubo (Phillipines) in the 90s was attributed to a GLOBAL temperature drop of about a full degree in the following years. The millions of tons of ash in the atmosphere blocked solar rays.

    We have an almost perfect cone-shaped island near our province where I live in Philippines, it has a resort and few residences and I really really think it's a sleeping Volcano, sleeping volcanoes are one the most dangerous types of Volcano, most of the time, people have no Idea that one is a volcano until suddenly it erupts, just like Mt. Pinatubo.
    Edit: Just found out, it really is a Volcano, a potentially active one but since no history record can be found, they classified it as POTENTIALLY ACTIVE since it's not extinc. Wew...

      The "Tectonic Setting" (the structure of the earth's crust at a given location) is only one of four variables in the formation of volcanoes.
      However the asthenosphere and the mantle have a major effect on volcanic activity and in some cases, conditions in the outer core of the earth can eventually migrate to the surface.
      So the number of earthquakes are not a specific indicator of impending volcanic activity.

    @cumhurbabaoglu2585 4 роки тому +6

    There is a great misconception here. A similar mistake was in the previous Volcanoes 101 video too.
    The heat from the outer core does NOT melt mantle rocks above it to produce magma as shown in the video, although it can be said that both radioactive decay in the core and the heat leftover from the Earth's accretion are two major sources of heat that cause mantle to convect vigorously and drive plate tectonics, which eventually cause mantle rocks to undergo partial melting in some specific regions, not everywhere.
    Primary melts come directly from the partial melting (%5-30) of the upper mantle, which under normal conditions is solid and cannot produce magma because geotherm doesn't intersect solidus. Based on observations of earthquake waves through Earth's interior, it's known that mantle is simply solid. However, it behaves plastically over geological time. In other words, it's able to flow. Its viscosity is much higher than rhyolite lava.
    In short, there are three ways that melts could be produced from the mantle lherzolites. It's either by adding volatiles to the mantle as in subduction zones, or by adiabatic decompression as in mid-ocean ridges, or by increasing the tempature so that geotherm can intersect solidus. Primary melts can undergo differentiation by a couple of processes such as fractional crystallization, magma mixing, assimilation of surrounding rocks etc. so you can find various types of magma and igneous rocks.
