The year is 1764. Haydn is 33 and hasn't secured his position with the Estahasy family yet. Haydn is eclectic. He doesn't mind grabbing something he heard from a passing French or Italian source, but Haydn is working within his general plan for each movement and how they work in the complete symphony. In this one, it's the wood flute or recorder, which was used by JS Bach. He saves the energy for the last movement which is made up of rococo episodic passages and Italianate trim. He still never allowed anything to go on much past human endurance and the effect is light and upbeat throughout Best
Some interesting points, but some factual and interpretive errors. Symphony 24 was written as you say in 1764, but Haydn’s appointment to the Eszterhazy family was 1761; it is therefore an Eszterhaza symphony. Haydn was 32 in 1764. Haydn was not an eclectic composer; he was ‘...forced to be original’, and as he said himself, his only mentor was CPE Bach (and possibly Porpora for some student basics). Haydn acknowledged a debt to no other composer than CPE Bach - ever. Mozart could be described as eclectic, but Mozart and Haydn were absolute polar opposites. Whilst there is something Italian intrinsic to Haydn’s style - Mozart too, along with virtually every other contemporary composer - there is pretty much 0% of anything French; in actual fact it is in all in the opposite direction as Haydn’s music was clearly known to a number of contemporary French composers. The content of this symphony is some way beyond that of almost all Haydn’s contemporaries - there is rather more to it than ‘rococo’, ‘light’ and ‘upbeat’. You’re quite right overall - it is a very fine symphony.
