    Thanks for the shout-out! Here's hoping we can uncover proof that more of these rides existed... I'm still convinced there were more.

    I have been in a deluxe Yankee Candle store growing up, where model trains always ran overhead in the winter wonderland display area. If I had known these monorails existed back then, I'd have wanted to visit the mall more often just to experience what it would've felt like to ride on those model trains as a kid.

    The reason why trains seemingly have a lot of Christmas rep is due to the idea of taking a train home to Christmas, plus the idea of model railways for window displays and what not

    It certainly would've been cool to ride 1 of those in a mall. Oh well, at least we have a train at the Volusia Mall. Or at least, a cart and trailers dressed like a train. So good enough for me. Merry Christmas Tot!

    There's a local breakfast joint near my town (Molly Brown's, I think it's called) that has a year-round replica of this sort of monorail, made of a model train setup that runs the entire size of the shop. It's not a simply-shaped restaurant space, there's a few large bends and interesting twists to fit the various dining rooms.

    • @drewzero1
      @drewzero1 9 місяців тому

      @@SynchroScore Isn't it? I have heard a lot of debate about whether it was self-propelled or needed to be pushed, and even the year of the wreck is left out of most accounts.
      I gather that it was supposed to be entirely scrapped, but part of it was saved and rebuilt into that form without official knowledge or approval, and therefore not a lot was recorded about it. One rail fan magazine reportedly printed a picture of it with the caption "wouldn't two of these make a great locomotive?" 🤣

    • @SynchroScore
      @SynchroScore 9 місяців тому

      @@drewzero1 It might have been self propelled, looking at it, but I couldn't be sure. The control system of the GG1 relied on a large transformer located in the center of the body, behind one of the two cabs. This stepped down the overhead voltage and had a 22-position tap changer to feed varying AC voltages to the motors. Looking at the plans, it could have been the half with the transformer, but that would make the resulting kitbash extremely heavy at the blunt end, which would confirm the stories about it frequently derailing.
