I'm driving a 1996 FH16 Volvo in Tasmania, Australia with 1.8 million kilometres on the clock for Searoad Logistics. The drive train is all original with no rebuild on Volvo's own engine gearbox or axles. They're a bloody good truck 👍
Although I don't drive trucks, owning a Ford car with a Volvo engine, I have to admit they do a good job there.

Volvo had the 16.1 here in the US. The only people who had problems with the 16.1, especially when hooked up to the I-Shift, thought that the I-Shift’s skipping gears was illegal, and would “finger f**k” the their tractors in the insane belief they knew better. The max horsepower available was 625/2323 ftlbs ~ 3150Nm here stateside. Our “ultra low sulfur diesel” has 15 PPM sulfur content, Europe’s diesel has 10 PPM. That has to be better for the engine(s) emissions systems.
The FH 700 is an amazing truck been pulling 175.ton with them for 7 years in Western Australia . Some have just hit 2 million km on them with same engine.
How much power/fuel does it take on average? There are no hills I suppose?
I highly doubt 2 million doing 175 tonne, ours are rebuilt at 700-900 kms or sold and they tow light triples. And yes plenty of hills just very long pulls up them
The Volvo will achieve them kms without rebuilding. It’s just the poxy Cummins that can’t. Remember pre emissions pre 2008 the C15 pissed it in pulling Qauds in the Pilbara.
That truck engine rebuild is around 1.8mil to 2mil has Volvo said last year to me

Another Great video Steve ! After 50yrs in the trucking industry in the US iv'e seen huge advances in equipment over the years. All the manufacturers have made great contributions and advance's. I believe Volvo & Mack have been the cutting edge. It's easy to see Volvo's influence in the Mack's since taking them over. Iv'e seen many Australian Volvo & Mack videos with the 16L motor and it seems more than capable even with the heaviest of combinations. We had the 16L in North America for a few years but it seemed to be trouble prone and hard on fuel. In recent years they have replaced it in our market with Cummins for the above 500hp needs. Has the 16L we see in the AU has been an improved version it seems to be an amazing combination ether in Volvo or Mack when combined with the I or M'shifts. Thank You for making it possible for those of us who can't be there for the ride all experience to feel like we were !
They had problems with the manufacturing tolerances in the US when they started producing the engines there. They stopped supplying them eventually which i think was because of low demand. Both the D13 and D16 from Volvo are rock solid engines. They are famous for their reliability in both truck and marine applications.

So I was driving a FH16 Volvo 600 pulling a 60m 214 ton quad. Great truck. Excellent driver ergonomics. Puts every US truck to shame especially Kenworth.
I operate a 2016 T880 Kenworth. What a piece of crap.
I’ve driven KW (Pete’s as well). Both conventional and COE. Leg cramps in the Old “Large Cars”. Back aches in the COE. Bad impressions from American designs, they’re crap. Owned a 2011 VNL 780 for a while. It was a former CRST tractor that hadn’t been treated well but gave me no real problems. I’d love to own another Volvo, just wish I could get an FH 16 750 6x4 XXL here stateside.

William Drijver Some places out there are like being on another planet, to drive from Sydney to the capital city of Western Australia (Perth) is about four and a half thousand kilometres by road. I've done the trip eleven times, twice by motorbike and it never gets boring, driving to Darwin as this guy did is even more interesting. Don't worry though, you can still get salted liquorice here. ;-)

What a beautiful truck looks like it gave you a smooth drive
I lived on the 88x North American version of this truck powered by a Cummins ISX. The first 100k miles was a trial. The lighting computer went tits up in the middle of the Mojave. That was a long, expensive night. After that 550k trouble free miles. At 70k lbs it typically got around 7.5 MPG. Volvo NA makes a nice truck and they stand behind them. The Interstate has a HUGE sleeper too. Far more room than I needed and a bout 4 times the size of what you have on that unit. I leased mine on contract to a large LTL carrier. (Never again!)
Sure wish they’d sell this in the USA. For what we do it would be great to have the turning radius and it looks so much better than the North American volvos.
Get yourself to a dealer in Canada . Next year its gonna be marketed there .. Built in NC too .. which is kinda strange.

Im a hauler from back in the day my first truck was a kenworth bullnose the north american trucks where way better than the european trucks we had only daycabs the bullnose was a sleeper ive been driving for 40 years now as a roadtrain driver and 58 total as a hauler
Back in the day American truck all the way but know the europeans just improved im driving a scania S torpedo in Australia beautiful truck 12 speed v8 730 hp 16 liter engine can haul everything
@@hmadbnibouach627 But even back in the day .. American trucks were Australianised & were very very different animals to what you get plodding along i40 in the US . Same is still the truth today with US & euro trucks used on the long haul. A stock US or euro truck without Australian mods would last 5 mins in the scrub.
They have certainly conquered the world with there trucks. Australia certainly utilise every type of vehicle and manufacturer to there advantage. By the time you go through a manual box, you are already down the road with a Volvo I-shift. Ego aside for us men and enjoy

Well I have to admit that I never knew that Volvos were built here in Aus. I drove a FL6 for a year or more (a ridged with a fridge on the back). The sleeper was great except for the fact it was right above the motor and turbo (okay in winter but,,,). I would say it was a very very forgiving truck. The things that I witnessed its owner doing were beyond at times were beyond description ( as a truck driver he was a great market gardener ). With Volvos synchro version of a road ranger he would "flat change" it while I shuddered But it took it, it stood up to it and I could never say a thing against a Volvo driveline.

Biggest combos I’ve ever driven is a super b quad tri set up and a , a combo road train maybe one day might get my arse in something like that even just for a drive .

Road trains can get even longer too, largest I've seen is an 8 plus dog, there's a second engine in a trailer to help push along. Mostly mine roads but a few public roads get those, Carpenteria Highway gets them between MacArthur river mine and Bing Bong port north of King Ash bay.

Looks comfy AF. Super quiet in the cab at 100km/h. Would feel like driving a car. You would jump out alot less fatigued after a long haul than some of these other farm trucks on the road. One please Mr Volvo ☝️

Good video. It's a pity you still have to go out to Morven to hook up the full rig. Surely now the Toowoomba bypass is open, you should be able to hook it up at least there. Look at Townsville... triples and quads right to the port... Wake up Qld Transport.

700HP Volvo turbo diesel with an I13 transmission. It was on the screen for about 15 seconds.
16 liter inline 6 probably with I-Shift transmission.
@@darenzy The D13 engine is the biggest we see here in the US & I think that is 500hp max. They must have a bigger engine that we don't get.

The previous model XXL was bigger in the bunk and 700hp was 700hp, not the 500 that it feels like now. Volvo have always been funny like that, sometimes you'd get a 540 that'd make a 600 blush. I once had a 610 that would trounce the old 660, it's just a Volvo thing.

Recently I travelled central Au, part on the Stuart highway, saw triple axle tractor + dogs, five trailer ore haulers, largest extended bed (length and width), self levelling high load carrying oversize and others. There's a good mix out there.
I was surprised by that as well, made no sense to me. I'm an American trucker we don't do road trains like that but we do do doubles and in some states triples. Don't know your terms, so a dog is anything with a 5th? I'd call that a semi trailer - dolly, and I guess a B triple. What I don't understand is why the trailer and dolly at the front, the B-triple, the last three trailers are more stable, I'd put the dolly/trailer combo at the back. I'd hook it up as the two B trailers, then a long box, dolly, and long box.
@@snek9353 yes, I'm referring to a dog as trailer with 2 (or more) axles with a 5th wheel and A-frame.
And yes, putting the more stable b-doubles up front seems the sensible thing to me.
I'm not a trucker tho. Engineer who takes an interest.
@@LatinDanceVideos it's because it's more stable that you put it at the back. You don't want the unstable trailer in the unstable spot.
As for notation that is an ABB quad. It has an A coupling (drawbar) between the first and second trailer, then two B couplings (turntable), and there are 4 trailers all up.
It is not the most common type of quad usually you see AAB quads for highest possible weights or BAB quads for joining two B trains without shuffling in the yard. But this way is the most stable way for the trailers he has.

All. Any of them can be towed as a single or in any legal combination with other trailers.
Every axle has a drum or disc brake on them , all air !!

They moswell go 6 trailers at 70m only straight roads an no hills . I've seen roadtrain drivers come to nz an freak out cause the hills and narrow roads freaks them out

It's basically the equivalent of a triple road train however the 2 B trailers make it more stable.
Its economics 2 b,doubles out of Brisbane verses 3 singles to hookup ares 1 less truck
I'm a driver in America and I'd love to drive a road train that cab looks a bit small compared to my truck but I'd still love to experience the road trains I'm always up for a good challenge lol
We are still very Kenworth for long haul, but the Euros are making am impact. Problem is delivery from sale. If you are buying 25 new trucks Kenworth can't supply that many quickly. So you buy a few kens a few WS a few volvos etc.
Kenworth are a bit of a pain for anything over a single trailer as the 12v system needs to be upgraded to 24v so it also adds cost.

Homefront bloody easily. The trains I drive in the Pilbara. Old 909s 98 wheels. Apart from steers everything is tri including drives. Never an issue with air pressure and they are just twin pot compressors on the poxy Cummins. Over there we are Super Qauds. 60 metres. 194.5 tonnes

I like road trains.
I enjoyed driving a 25meter, but in a straight line for hours and hours.. its not great compared to load unload multiple stops, time goes slow in a straight line
I think the biggest test is to send on a run at to the stations collecting cattle

We get 1to 1 pulling 175 ton done to 0.9 to1km depending on conditions but the trucks hardly ever come off full boost.
