I used to work for the Department of Transport (called The Highways Department back then) here in Adelaide as a surveyors assistant, and i spent many weeks on the Stuart Highway pegging the center line for the new road back when it was still a dirt road in the 80's. We pegged just South of Marla to the Northern Territory border. What i mean by pegging is, hammering a small star dropper every 25 meters and the center line for the new bitumen road was 50 meter's to the left of the peg going North, We had a camp set up at the back of the Marla hotel / petrol station. Wasn't much there back then but it was hard work swinging a sledge hammer all day for weeks on end but a great experience. Choked on a few flies as well. :)
I love that drive. We travel with our caravan and really appreciate the professionalism of the truck drivers out there. Always mindful of their needs and try to assist when possible.
@@justcruisinwithmicksally837 This was super interesting, thanks for sharing. I used to commute between Canberra/Sydney twice a week on a motorbike and always traveled late at night for the same reason, including all through winter - found the truck drivers far more predictable and safer to share the road with than the cars of daylight hours.
Used to be that way in the US too, but these days I've found not to expect the same behavior as in years past. Many times they aren't even courteous. Still old school guys out there, but not like it used to be.
My dad did this for over 20 years (Darwin to Katherine and back to darwin) delivering the news papers contracted by TNT, for over 12 years every single night including xmas. Then created his own run from Darwin to Jabaru ERA Ranger Mine(water samples fromn the uranium mine), then back to Darwin every single day for 15 years. Floods dodnt stop him, he would have to go the long way which took over 14 hours to do. Then get what sleep he could, then do it all again. He did it all by himself and never complained, he was my hero and still is. It would have been his birthday today, if he was still alive. GOD I miss him terribly 😔
@@justcruisinwithmicksally837 Thankyou for replying. My dads business was called Clancy Freight 🙂. Also my nanna (dads mum) opened and started TNT in a place called Gove, in East Arnhem land (in-between Cairns and Darwin, Northern part of Australia, my uncle worked for Ansett and it was a family run business. Hats off to you Mick! This is the sort of video/clip that needs to be everywhere! Showing what professional drivers are up against, before they even have to deal with other motorists!
Having done the Adelaide to Darwin towing a caravan every year for past twenty years, it was great to learn how you truck drivers go out the drive and your driving schedule. Brilliant. Cheers mate 🚛🚛
Fascinating glimpse at a different aspect of trucking. I can see a possible reason why the Road Trains have not been replaced by railroads: there are drop offs and pick ups along the way. Perhaps the tonnage is low enough that the break even point for railroads is not reached. Very impressed how well maintained the roads are compared to terrible maintenance in California, USA.
I loved this video, everything was spot on . I've driven LGV's for 30 years and have the upmost respect for all drivers pulling a road train, happy trucking guys
