Me who picked a 4 star gray male before I better understood how diversity affects litter sizes and ended up with 6 pups on my first official run 😂 but I was on Easy difficulty so all 6 survived and 2 of them were npc coats so neat Oh, and his personality was excellent for what I needed as a nervous ‘first timer’ (I’ve played legacy/classic before and only played anniversary edition with the intent to finish it just recently). From what I can gather observing him, he was very very bold, a bit of a loner but not totally unresponsive, and energetic (he fed the pups every time and retrieved the far away ones). Then my biggest pup had his first mate and she…is annoying but I’m not gonna kick her out/kill her. She’s less bold than my pup’s dad, an extreme introvert on the loner scale, and very lazy. She still retrieved pups but I swear she was so much of an introvert that I would put food in front of her and she’d refuse to eat it because the pups were too close 😂
The mate my Ultra-Ironwolf met is a real sweetheart, lol. Each time he catches a hare, he insists on picking it up and dropping it by me so she takes it instead. Never had a mate do that before but his biggest flaw also happens to be that he is absolutely god awful at beaver hunting.
So basically: Do what the game tells you: Pick a diversity based on the number of pups you want (Doesnt mean you cant get a bigger litter cause the chance is still there), interact with your partner in many ways and live with him for a while. Watch what he does, if he helps you with hunting, if he is playful with you, if he is not, if maybe he is a thief cause i guess that can be part of the personality? Idk i may be talking shit. But yeah, do watch your partner, hunt and do a little journey with them to analyse. Dont like it? Kick him out and go on search again. Of course... Choose wisely. And yeah, feed the damn thing, he is a wolf too just like you, dont starve it to death.
@@wiethen Its my way of talking. im not used to using they bcs english is not my first lenguage. And im using me as an example cause I usually play female. I didnt said you cant be male.
My very first mate was a 4 star gray male, at the time I only knew that the genetic coat color affected litter sizes and didn’t know the extent of how diversity worked (Side note: I am 99% sure that higher diversity also have higher stats or at least less 0 stats, the male I found has 2 health, 1 speed, -2 stamina and -1 strength. If your litter has a big pup [opposite of runt, the one that grows bigger faster than the others] it seems they have a good chance of directly copying the best mate’s stats. My biggest boi who I’m currently playing as, Thunder, has the exact same stats as his dad.) So, naturally, since I picked a 4 star gray male, I had 6 pups and 5 of them got sick 😂. But I played on Easy difficulty so they all survived their illnesses. I really really liked this mate, as he was very bold (always attacked predators), a loner but not totally unresponsive (he often went out on his own and took care of the pups) and he was energetic (always fed the pups), and I don’t think any mate after is gonna top him. Next as big boi Thunder I found him a 2 star female, and she…sucks. I kept her because my last mate made me like loner wolves, but she is an extreme introvert (refuses to eat if the food I give her is too close to the pups, I always have to call her if I want her to follow me to hunt, rarely emotes back, etc.), not quite as bold as the previous mate, and she is very lazy. Ironically the 3 pups I had with her have been the craziest pups yet, one frequently runs away to mess around and I think one of them is just deaf because I’ve told her to go inside during an attack and she sits there with a buffering circle in her head 😂. This mate is just 2 star but the pups kind of act like she’s a 0 star with how inbred they might be-
I do recommend trying to go for the four star mates if your playing on challenging mode or accurate mode so you have most chance of majority of the pups not getting sick and ultimately dying
I have a 4 star mate atm (with an NPC coat to!) and she is the BEST mate I have had. We have 7 pups and none have died because she always manages to chase the predators away before the pups even make it to the den. She is super friendly, not the best stats but she can hunt with my wolf really well. She also NEVER steals my carcasses and just leaves em be. Really hope she lasts for all the litters
The mate I just got, I will give him a rabbit bc his hunger is lower and he’ll pick it up and bring it to me I have to give it to him twice for him to eat it.
My first mate was a 4 star and I got superrr lucky then my next mate for my other wolf was a 4 star and I thought I was easy to just up and get one. Then I played my 3rd wolf and the only mates I could find for him was a 1 star. So he got a one star mate and ngl- she’s actually really good, she’s fast, caring and fights along side me lol. Idk why people don’t pick 1 stars sooner. And none of my pups got sick despite up both being grey. And I made it to endless summer without ur worries 😭😭😭
Diversity only affects the litter not the personality of the wolf. A 4 star wolf can be as much caring, energetic and bold as a 1 star wolf. Also golden tip try to google ''personality'' for WQ with that you can kinda get a feeling what your mate is like if they are energetic, bold, cautious, lazy etc. There lots of positive and negative effects on what personality they will have and you can choose your ideal partner like that. While learning along the way ^
I'm currently in a trial period with a 1 star mate, and I was planning on just uaing him for easier hunting for a bit before ending it (as I had 15% health at the time), but this NPC honestly has my heart. He's bold, playful, and caught rabbits to give to me when my player wolf had a major leg injury
I just got the game a couple of days ago, and my mate is 2 star diversity and I ended up with 6 pups on my first run!!!! I’m so scared their gonna die!!! 😭😭 I was expecting a smaller litter
I naturally get my mate in wolfquest food when they either starting whining at me to go and get food with them or when i go and feed my wolf myself but even sometimes if they are at around 90% on food sometimes they would still steal the food for the puppers
Just be lucky like me, i found 4 star female mate that had good stats and really was helping me in unting she also was very playful. Its matter of luck.
I have a WONDERFUL 1 Star mate called meter I tell ya he is a wonderful dad! I don't mind about the stars too much we had 3 little pups 1 died (so far) tho Meter risks his life my the pups he never leaves my side unless I tell him to, he's playful, bold, and lazy he does take care of the pups alot and doesn't waste food he's awesome. My wolf Soot who's his mate, I helped him find his confidence in fighting he risks his life and I absolutely don't care if he's 1 Star I just care about how he acts. Meter has been down to 3 health protecting the pups from a cougar he's wonderful I tell ya I think I made the right choice picking him.
My wolf starlight has a pretty gode mate his name is bone but sometimes he starves himself idk why also how the heck can i complete the quest endless summer? (If you could do a vid on it pls do)
I like smaller litters because they are easier to carry around, I don't like having dens mainly due to fleas eventually slowing everything down, or floods and stuff happening I would rather either be able to carry my pups around mostly if long-distance traveling or I'll send them off into long grass and set a marker for the areas i hang around, I find lower diversity wolves (and younger wolves)to be more playful and sometimes more dependent and just like to mess around and won't really do hunting by themselves or until you've got whatever your killing on low HP but higher diversity (and older wolves) more independent and more protective of territory, and better hunters, this is just what I've seen from my own gameplays but you should definitely pay attention to how your mate acts during courtship to determine if you'll keep them around or not
Ok yeah my mate died way to many times..and one time a 2star mate attacked a stranger wolf and she was awesome and the 5star mate just sat.. there.. i agree
Exactly just cause it’s better on the resume doesn’t mean they are a wonderful wolf. The fact iv had 2 star and even 1 star mates that have put in more work and effort then 4 starts. They should be embarrassed. Just cause you got stars doesn’t mean you can slack off
It's the total opposite for me... Once I found myself a 2 star diversity mate and well... I got 7 pups...i was not expecting 7 pups! Personally I prefer small pup litters like what happened to me when I found a 4 star diversity.. I was expecting 6 or 5 pups because I knew that the diversity impacts the litter size and.. I got 2 pups! And I'm not sad about this! It actually was like a miracle for me! I was rlly happy about it but after a while it kinda started to get lonely and boring... But you get my point... It's a horror to take care of 7 pups. (at least for me)
Tips for mates who hog food: Watch, no STALK, them closely… if they start to sAunTeR towards food MEANT FOR dA bABiEsSs, then WALK UR BADDY BUTT, and go SIT THAT BUTT DOWN ON THE CARCASS. i promise you, they will just be confused, and then leave it alone without taking a bite. (Last time i played wolf quest was a few months ago, and the last i raised pups was in September- but i believe it should still work)
Now that the saga is out and this video is sort of outdated, I'll put a tip in: It's most likely better to go for higher diversity so that way you can have more pups, and more are likely to survive to adulthood.

Yeah, I get there NPC but there supposed to act like real wolves, that's there AI programming. And for some reason, the mates I get hunt things even when there not hungry! They might be only at 124 hunger, and for some reason they HAVE to hunt a rabbit or eat the pups food when the pups can eat.
