    When I first started with colored pencils the instructor suggested that you buy the best pencils you can afford, that you'll never regret it. So my husband bought me the Faber Castell Polychromos 120 set, the Faber Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils 60 set, and the Inktense 72 set. What a blessing that gift of pencils have been!

    Despite being what is usually considered a "beginner" with coloured pencils, I bought the 120 polychromos set because there was a discount so I got them for £120. I find that these amazing pencils have actually helped me develop my skills with colour pencils and I am completely spoilt for colours! Previously I had tried the Prismacolours in the 72 set I found that whilst the colour lay down was nicer as it didn't leave white spots, they break very easily and it got very annoying

      +Alethea Larrad, I am so glad you shared this. I think one of the biggest mistakes we make is to give beginners inferior products to learn on. It only leads to frustration. Of all the people...beginners need the best stuff so that they can learn proper techniques and not get discouraged. Thanks for your comment!

      @@ColoringBliss I know I'm late but I'm so glad to read this. I am definitely a beginner but I got a gift certificate for Christmas and I've wanted to buy the polychromos for so long and now I can afford it. But seeing some reviews etcI hear a lot that these are not for beginners and I've been wondering if they're not for me after all, as you need to be a professional to use them. Actually in one review they said that beginners wouldn't be able to blend them and that got me a bit discouraged. I know I won't automatically make better art because I have expensive pencils but the cheap ones I have are super hard to blend and I'm hoping a better pencil will help me to be better at getting a smooth color.

      @@itsjustme2970 If you want to try them out, you can buy the pencils individually. Its worth buying three colours so you can try them out blending on the different paper types you use. The pencil most promoted is Prismas, but I tried them and HATE them, tutorials tell you to layer and layer but for me they went so shiny I couldn't layer more colours on top, yes you could apply clear gesso and continue but they weren't for me. Polychromos are silky smooth to use on various paper surfaces. Any new material you try is an experiment between the pencil and the paper type getting a combo you love to work with. We all have our faves. But I would highly recommend buying indivdual pencils in the brands you want to try to see if you like them with your own choice of paper and technique style.

    I know this is a few years old, but I just came across it as I’ve recently started experimenting with different colouring pencils. Thanks for taking the time to make this superb video. I’ve zipped by so many videos that have nothing more than people colouring to background music. Yours was nicely detailed, very interesting and helpful. The visuals with the commentary were perfect. And we got to see you colour as well! But, colouring to more commentary, which I very much appreciate. I also like the mentions of the other supplies you used (I directly went off and purchased a colour wheel). I’ll definitely be back for more.

    A couple of things that you might like to know (note, these things are my personal opinion):
    1. The polychromos metallics are pretty awful. I would not buy them. Other companies do better metallics. All the other polychromos pencils are great, but NOT the gold, silver and copper.
    2. Polychromos pencils are built very well. You can sharpen them the easy way where you rotate the pencil and hold thw sharpener still. I noticed you struggle a little doing it the other way (which is a good idea with prismacolor, but no need with polychromos)

  • @PERISLIP
    @PERISLIP 7 років тому +3

    I have these and bought them when i read Prisma colour kept breaking. I've looked at dozens of videos for tips etc. I'm only doing this for fun and don't see the point in spending ages going over and over one small area. I realise the professionals get better results but I'm happy with my efforts. At the moment I'm doing grayscale pictures

    • @ColoringBliss
      @ColoringBliss  7 років тому +1

    I may be mistaken but I think a very large percent of the reason that Prismas break so often is because of the absolute battering they get in shipping! Right from the factory to the packagers to the distributors to the merchants to your doorstep, they get treated like a football by the loaders and delivery people! Because they have such a soft core, this treatment cracks the core more easily than a harder pencil. Just a theory though...

    • @Snickerszn
      @Snickerszn 7 місяців тому +1

      I always thought that also. If I ever have trouble with prismas breaking at the start because of bad handling or off center I put them in the oven and cool them fast. Seems to help a lot to get the wax stable in middle of pencil.

      There’s a difference between black paper, which has normal paper pores and printed black paper which is “sealed” by ink, you can see that the surface usually shimmers and is smoother than the rest. That’s why the colour doesn’t show up.

    Love your reviews, they are so thorough! I'm newer to coloring but just love it and plan to keep it as a lifelong hobby and I'm actually pretty good. I've invested in the large set of Prismas (which I love as well for their own reasons), but I think it would be a great addition to buy some of the Polychromos. It just gives a different set of colors and saturations and variety, and I love that I'd have both good wax-based pencils and oil-based ones. I have some cheaper Guang Hui oil pencils that are ok, but after watching this I'm thinking I'm going to bite the bullet and get me a set of these beautiful Faber Castells. Thanks for your hard work!

    i loved the review! I got the 60 color set on sale last year and i have never had a problem with breakage or anything else.
    Just a hint. If you rotate your pencil, it will be easier to find a sharp edge that will get into the tooth and make it easier to
    burnish. I do have one question. Have you tried isopropyl alcohol instead of mineral spirits for blending? If so, what do you think?

    • @ColoringBliss
      @ColoringBliss  7 років тому +4

      +Michelle Earl, thanks for watching. Yes, I have done some blending with rubbing alcohol...it doesn't work as well as the OMS does and the smell is hard for me to tolerate. You are also right about the pencil rotating. I do that all the time and constantly forget to mention it in my tutorials.

    This was a lovely piece and review -.my absolute favorite pencils are FC Polychromos and Caran D'ache Luminance would you happen to work together incredibly beautifully so if you have a set of luminance I would to just to try them with your Polychromos and but I enjoyed your review and your little red hen very sweet and I don't usually like coloring things like that but I like your technique very much and I think that you are! Very versatile and very informative and I happen to agree with everything that you said and did also love the fact that you really make the light source very important in the shading and shadowing are just very easy to comprehend here thank you again

    Wonderful review, Jennifer. Do you think it matters if you use an oil-based blender with an oil-based pencil and vice-versa? Like maybe the Lyra Splender Blender would work better with those, even though the Prisma seemed to work well. Just not sure. I've blended my Polys with the Lyra blender, but haven't tried the Prisma blender yet.
