You take testing open flame fire pit reviews to the next level, with your flip-flops on. Great review I’m going to add this to my solo stove and thank you
Your observations are spot on! We had the exact same experience with ours. I really like your reviews and they are very in depth. One thing I dislike about the solo stove is the price and then nickel and diming for everything. I'm sure this deflector is great, but probably not worth 169.00 as advertised on the website...
i think the cast iron accessory on the cooking system does 80% of the same thing so if you're ok with the visual look of it really dont need both for the $$$
Random question, but are you using the solo stove under the pavilion? I have a 14x14 pavilion that looks similar to yours and have debated it but wasn't sure if it gets too hot for the fan, ceiling etc.
The first generation was as the legs were too short. Solo stove has since increased the length of the legs and it is much easier to add wood now. also if you had the shorter legs, solo stove sent out the new longer legs for free. My brother has one and the difference between the shorter legs and longer legs is just a few inches but it makes all the difference.
Thanks for the review and the tips on placing prior to lighting! It’s the small things, right? Just purchased mine, and it’s still in the box. I’ll go ahead and break it out next weekend!
Thank you for the great review. I have noticed quite a bit of smoke after you placed the heat deflector. I saw smoke like this in a few different other videos too. Have you noticed it? Smoke is increasing maybe because the draft is reduced?
it is just the fresh wood / bark that does clean up after a min or two. i wouldn't say there is more smoke... but it stops the heat and what smoke there is going straight up and pushes that heat and little smoke out so in a way its slightly smokier but not like a campfire
Great video! I'd greatly appreciate a response as I'm about to purchase. 1 quick call out... I'd bet if you waited about 15 minutes before adding the heat deflector, you'd have much less sut after the double burn/smokeless takes affect. I'm thinking of utilizing the grill hub with a cast-iron wok or grill grate and I'm curious if that would do about as good as a job defecting heat while also being dual purpose. Do you have any experience with these cast iron accessories? Thanks for the great video!

Great video, thanks! Very helpful in making the decision to get the deflector. Do you know if I can I keep my spark shield in place while using the deflector? It appears by the photos on the Solo web site that there would be room for the legs of the deflector on the lip. Thanks again.
@@SmokingDadBBQ Thanks for your reply and your info. The Solo agent said they could fit on at the same time, and I ordered the shield. The last FAQ on the Solo website only says the airflow might be compromised by using both together. I’ll let you know.
Great video! On camera, it looks like adding the heat deflector creates more smoke. Does adding that accessory make the surrounding area smokey or smokier? Thanks!
The birch bark makes it seem worse as I had just added it. It does push more heat and some smoke out but once it’s going clean it’s not bad. Same as normal where you don’t smell like smoke and the small amount that does come your way is a worthwhile trade off for the heat on cold days
At what point do you have too much hardware around the fire so you won't enjoy the fire other than for heat. I enjoy the view of the fire also. Great video.
Well that’s the biggest short fall of the solo stove for sure. It is already a little closed off and this does not help. Makes it more of an outdoor heater than a visual fire
Thanks for the review! Last time we went camping ⛺️ people were complaining about the heat from my Solo Bonfire was shooting straight up. This seems like a great solution!
Any issues with running the solo stove on a wood deck with having the riser? Looking at getting a ranger set up for home and camping. But having a cedar deck concerns me.
Does it create a danger with flame moving out along the bottom of the redirect shield vs straight up flame? Also, it seems to smoke more with that on, which obviously the point of the solo stove to begin with is smokeless or did you find that you needed less wood to keep warm since the heat was redirected and so would not smoke with less wood needed?
That was more this batch of birch bark. Doesn’t normally do that but my warp has gotten a little worse since recording this For the flames you can control based on log placement and qty. it’s not had us nervous at any point

I have a bonfire and this whole thing just seems like to much work… the bonfire is not big enough for normal firewood to begin with and the to have to manage the deflector as well and then needing special gloves… ridiculous
there are a lot of trade offs being made when you add them all up for sure
Considering you should have 15 to 20 feet clearance above the fire pit a basic sophromric measurement that any high school student can do....mmmm not sure I'm listening to anything you have to say.
