On October 14, 1912, while on a campaign trail in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, former President Theodore Roosevelt was shot just before delivering a speech. Despite being wounded, Roosevelt demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination. The assailant, John Schrank, fired a revolver at close range, but the bullet was slowed by a metal eyeglass case and a folded manuscript in Roosevelt's breast pocket.
Although the bullet pierced Roosevelt's chest and lodged in his rib, it did not penetrate any vital organs. Remarkably, Roosevelt decided to proceed with his scheduled speech, refusing immediate medical attention. Standing before the crowd, he assured them that he had been shot but was not seriously injured, stating, "It takes more than that to kill a bull moose."
For approximately 90 minutes, Roosevelt captivated the audience with his speech, addressing various political issues and emphasizing his commitment to progressive reforms. Only after concluding his address did he finally agree to be taken to the hospital. Doctors were astonished by his endurance and credited his physical fitness as a key factor in his survival.
Despite the assassination attempt, Roosevelt's determination to carry on with the speech became an emblematic moment in his life, highlighting his courage and unwavering spirit. This incident further solidified his reputation as a charismatic and indomitable figure in American history.
