- A session on a small selection of Victorian weapons. Follow your local possession / carry laws, reasonable force and proportionality. Video primarily intended for historical reference with historical weapons
NOTE: weapons are dangerous. Some types may be illegal to own or carry where you live around the world. These videos are primarily designed to provide a historical flavour of how things may have worked, or were taught / used. The onus is always on you to know the law and the repercussions as it applies to you. Train safely and responsibly.
Charming. Something no well dressed gentleman should be without.
Thanks for sharing.
Being a Yank and having made frequent trips to the UK, specifically East London, I go no where without my cane. Buy an Oak one with a large crook and you are able to do disarms and arm traps with it.
Best self defense direct impact tool ever. Length of it gives you time /distance tactics and you can go through any airport in the world with it without even a second glance.Training videos are prolific so get some. Serious stuff this because all the thugs are carrying knives and it's gotten out of control with the stabbings in London....
Just for further info for my American dopes, any altercation WILL result in jail time, ala Knicked as they say, WHETHER YOU WERE THE VICTIM OR NOT. The Law really doesn't care what the truth is and they aren't going spend their limited resources to find it.
Best course of action is to strike elbows ,arms , legs and RUN. For a drama free week or two, do yourself a favor and DO NOT report it unless you have to.Pack an extra couple cans of common sense and don't be afraid to open them. Leave the "See it, Say it, Sorted " stuff for the locals....
No witnesses , no serious injuries = no crime.....Bobbies have better things to do anyway, they are absolutely overwhelmed.....Be polite, Be safe, keep aware of your surroundings, don't look like a damn tourist and absolutely know where the Loo is after having Indian take away.... Peace.
@captain crankypants Well I’ve had my share of Indian both there and here in the States but I have to say Brick Lane London is the best that can be had. I find myself craving the pie and mash with jellied eels from East London though. Nice pie and mash shop in Greenwich.... maybe have a pint at the Brewers Fayre in Beckton; can’t wait to go back....
I miss having Digestives with my tea from Poundstretchers. I tried but can’t be found or ordered here. Next trip over , I’m stocking up like a starving survivalist . I can’t wait to see the custom officers face when they see my luggage filled with packages of Digestives!!🤣
Valid point. That being said, I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried out by 6 if the situation requires it.
Wtf are even saying
Best SD impact tool? Maybe! Here's some issues I have.
1-NOT all Americans are dopes, so as YOU stated, please be polite.
2-The best weapon hands down is situational awareness. If your not aware of what's around you, it's probably to late anyway, which brings me to
#3-Distance for anyone who knows how to fight is an art in itself, if your not aware of what's around you, you may end up being choked out by your own weapon. Hence an unseen attack from behind, or misplaced first strike.
The blackjack is always a good way to change the dynamics up a bit, I keep a small blackjack and a knife on me when I go out, if the blackjack gets out of my grip the knife comes out, better to be at court then ending up in a coffin or a urn. Loved the content, seen some of your other videos, you now have another subscriber to your channel, some pretty cool videos on your channel.😎👍
It's always good to see another admirer of Simon's work; I have several pieces from him and they really are exceptional.
A tough old man who had lived long enough to see his scars go white told me "A man should always have a clean pair of wool socks and twenty dollars in quarters."
Quarters aren't what they used to be...
I live near a beach with a lot of stones, found one that is slightly smaller than a tennis ball of course beautifuly round, anyway, two breadbags doubled up & the stone......
@@stevenmathieson7349 hell yeah nice , ily man stay safe out there
Why, yes, ..I do wash a lot of laundry...
Sounds like the most old school gangster thing I've heard all day.
I became a copper in America in 1976. At that time I was given a “demon dong” this was a round lead weight on the end of a spring covered with leather With a thong on it.. you used it just as you demonstrated this..
I carried this in my left back pocket, (some of the guys had pants with a pocket in them to carry a slapper)
I got attacked by a dog and hit it once with the demon dong and killed it cold dead .. it was biting one second and dead the next..
A note on straps.. you don’t actually put straps around your wrist..
The strap loops over your thumb then goes around the back of your hand where you then grab the striking device .. this gives you control of the weapon and it is difficult to lose or be pulled away but you can release it if it looks like you are going to be trapped by the weapon.
It doesn’t sound right but try it. The strap hooked on the thumb and pulled around the hand actually makes your grip on the striking weapon tighter...
I just subscribed..
Yes! Exactly what he said about the strap! Same thing they taught up with the lanyard on nightsticks in the military.
About the use of the strap, the Korean dan bong is used like you describe it.🙏🙏🙏
I have an old palm sap issued by the Centralia Washington PD way, way back in the day and a rubber-covered jack flat on one side marked "Chicago MPD". It was different before the ASP, OC, and Taser.
@@manjitrupbikramthe korean hopae has a similar thong that is used in the weapon swing.
It was basically a wooden identification plate worn hanging from the neck. Since it was obligatory to carry around people learnt to use it in self defence.
@@junichiroyamashita Thanks for sharing.🙏🙏🙏
The Brodie or palm sap is an excellent weapon of surprise. There are stories of American policemen having the ability to render people unconscious with a simple slap. It's a weapon that your opponent doesn't know about until it's far too late. The model I own is of a different design with a small block of steel in the business end. It can't be used for punching but for open handed strikes it's very potent.
Anyway, excellent information. You have a new subscriber.
Cheers fella thank you
Collarbones snap like a chopstick with a whack from one of those, and the arm attached to said collarbone, looses 95% of its strength.
That does not sound fun
i was told that the police specifically train to attack the collar bone in riot conditions (UK) as the recipient of a broken collar bone is highly unlikely to want to continue any resistance/aggression. (this was 30+ yrs ago - Thatcher era, ) the source was a member of a viking re-enactment group who had allegedly assisted with police crowd control/riot training (could have been BS, but hey sounds logical)
And you think you can easily hit the collar bone while in a fight?? 😂
@@mkleng Well the police I mention seem to have thought so, but then again, they were using riot batons.
I remember mid 80's a shop in Glasgow openly sold all kinds of leather saps, literally in the front window.
Victor Morris. You could buy an air rifle, a samurai sword, a rambo knife and an electric guitar all in one shop.
Yes I got a few knuckle duster's from the Barrow lands Glasgow
Have they passed reasonable common sense laws controlling the sale of electric guitars?

i keep a stout leather tag about 6 inches long on my keychain for this exact purpose, when i taught karate i realized that the average people i was teaching wouldn't carry something like a blackjack or a "sap" as i call them (had a granddad who carried a sap in the police for 35 years) or even carry a knife. but being able to use your keys in a similar manor to this (like a flail) can really tip the odds in your favor. Also i have never drawn any suspicion to myself when I've had to enter a government building or an airplane with my special "Keychain"!
Lead cord for curtains, sewn into a scarf. Inconspicuous and very effective
I made a wrist survival type bracelet with cobra weave, looks like a normal bracelet with loop on one end and a monkey fist knot on other. Knot goes through loop an looks like a catch. I can deploy it 3/4 secs an use like a sap. Knot contains a 11 mm lead ball.
In regards to the "Brock", Take an 8 or 9 ounce fishing weight, and place it in the center of a square cotton bandana. Fold the bandana to make a triangle. Then start rolling the weight until you wind up with a "tube" of bandana wit the weight in the middle. Fold the bandana. To use just grab the two "tails and use just exactly like your Brock. With my method, if the need to get rid of the weapon exists, shake the fishing weight out into your hand, and either sling it across the parking lot, or toss it into the roof of a conveniently placed building. Fold you bandana into a neat square and place it in your back pocket.
"Wait ! What ? Is that the sound of police sirens getting closer? Time to put on my "innocent bystander" face."
Love this.
It’s the rock in a sock thing.

Just be careful what color and which pocket you put it in. Otherwise your evening could end up a lot more interesting than you planned :D

Absolutely my pleasure, like to keep this strange bit of history alive
Just thinking you might want to look at Robert Escobar as book on saps, blackjack, and slung shots. It's the only published history of the underrated weapons. He's writing another book on a related subject, very hush-hush at the moment

I knew the Brodie as the "Chicago Pad". A heavy slap upside the head with it inside the hand is VERY nasty.

Best weapons are the ones that are most used items. Like umbrellas, belts with heavy buckels, steelcaps in shoes etc. Nobody will ever ask you for what you carry it
Absolutely, there’s great things that can be done by incidental and environmental weapons. Best not to need any, but always good to know and not need
Now a days they have weapons so small and powerful, and can be hooked on your key chain. Walking through a metal detector, drop your keys in the bucket that goes around, it's a Flash Light. A Flash Lights that is a strobe, and so powerful it will blind you at night, with a Steel rounded end, not into a Point, just rounded, very dangerous.

Much as I like saps, blackjacks, and slungshots saying they are "for self defense today" comes with some enormous caveats. In many jurisdictions simple possession is a crime. In others you can own, but carrying it brings you to the attention of the police. In the UK you will absolutely go up the steps for carrying an offensive weapon. And even if it's legal you are not going to pass the all-important Police Attitude Test. That said, they're excellent weapons.
You will be arrested for carrying a concealed weapon like this both in the UK and Canada.
@@fwcolb No doubt at all.
Oh absolutely, legal to own, illegal to carry in the UK. People will need to follow their own local guidance. But they are fascinating and interesting parts of weapon history
@@TommyMooreww2combatives Do you have a copy of Robert Escobar's "Saps, Blackjacks and Slungshots: A History of Forgotten Weapons"? So far as anyone can tell it's the only comprehensive history of these fascinating weapons.
@@TommyMooreww2combatives They are definitely not legal to carry in the UK.
Looking very clean and fashionable! Greetings from California, US. Subbed.
Sean Connery pulled out a brock in a movie with Kevin Costner.
Best dressed instructor on You Tube.
All those items are illegal to carry in the UK as they would be classed as offenceive weapons.
Reality is an offensive weapon in the UK apparently 🤷
In the UK today is every man for himself 🤐
The Brodie is a finger sap. They have been around since forever, but they never really caught on. The palm sap is vastly superior and used to be standard for cops in my area back in the bad old days. It was popular because one-shot knockouts were not hard to pull off, and since there was no closed fist and the weapon is hard to spot it just looked like the officer slapped the suspect.
4/27/23 Viewing and learning; loved it!
Fascinating to know what a blackjack is, having heard the term.
I think that they are all illegal in Germany and probably a whole lot of other countries... I grew up there and saw quite a bunch of weapons. Folding knives were by far the most common. During my childhood balisong were a status symbol and bicycle chains were more often used in brawls (stolen from bikes at schools forcing their owners to walk home) and so were glass bottles... Real criminals loved telescopic batons and knuckle dusters and when they meant business, they came with baseball bats, big knives and machetes. Some people also improvised jacks akin to a _lock in a sock_ (I heard of an incident with a handbag full with stones! And another case with a big hex nut on a shirt rope).
The weirdest weapons I've personally seen was a walking stick and a woman with spikes in her hair...
Personally, I've been threatened with balisong, razor, an iron rod, and a rapier (stolen from the parties hosts dad's room).
I used to have a 12 inch piece of hosepipe with 6 or 7 sections of rebar inserted.snaky
I then had that very thick trimmer nylon for a loop .they went full length to the tip .the last piece of rebar had an eye which the nylon went in from both sides and then tightly bound with a strong thin paracord to stop the centrifugal force taking all the slugs out with a vigorous swipe.
A mate and I were attacked in Southall, the only thing to hand was a windscreen wiper, even that made a difference. These things are very sweet.
The brock seems almost identical to a blackjack, an item i used to carry many years ago working the doors in the North West of England (very much pre SIA!)
It was indeed a leveller when the door team found itself outnumbered.
I would love to know how people weave that leather right over the whole thing. I can’t find ANY tutorials on UA-cam on how to do that. I can do the 4 strand braid down the shank but I can’t do it over the actual load? Anyone seen any videos on braiding the whole thing?
Weapon's such as this are illegal in the U.S.A.; However a half dozen key's on a king ring attached to a short chord isn't.
I'm not a Yank I'm a confederate, I never leave the house without a Fred Perrin knife and a Glock or a Smith and Wesson, I would like to get me one of them Slap jacks though, the cops carried them things when I was a kid, highly effective.
I carry a gun everywhere I go, that being said, majority of encounter needing force requires a blackjack not a gun, saving you jail time
There’s always that guy who, when bludgeon and impact type weapons are being discussed, thinks he has to remind people about his guns and knives 🙄

Where did you get that Palm sap / ring sap whatever you want to call it. Looks great, not too illegal, easily concealable and blends into your hand so you can't quite see it. I can't find them anywhere!
I suggest Nice stout oak cane with a solid brass head. And a good hook shape to it you can tank people right off their feet disarm them and cause serious damage in a fight. Are the single piece molded polypropylene canes available in UK ? They're cheap here Blackjacks are a bit different there yours has no wrapped spring handle? But I'm a rural yank.
Surely the ‘Brodie’ should be on the first & second knuckles?
I like the Brodie. I think fighting rings are very useful. I will wear heavy rings. Good legal, and brutal on the nose or eyes. But I'm boxing orientated so maybe not for everyone.
Awesomeness. Thanks for creating this space here. Where are these available please. Esp the ‘Brody’ ?
I'm seeing that Brody going flying across the room if you try to open hand slap with it! LOL
I made one of these this morning out of Paracord. Tested it out on my wrist, it was stunned for about 20sec
I live in the USA. All of the weapons in this video are illegal here, in every state as far as I know. I live in a constitutional carry state, where carrying a gun is legal, and even switchblade knives are legal; but a cosh/blackjack/billy-club is not, and neither are knuckledusters. Striking weapons like the one shown can be unintentionally lethal. I am sure that if you carried and used one of those things in the UK or Europe they would throw the book at you.
I make my own blackjacks from 10 oz torpedo sinkers (fishing) , wrap with four 1/2 leathers straps, braid them then tape it all up with electrical tape. These things hit REALLY REALLY hard . You're breaking bones for sure . And odds are they don't see it or respect it until it's too late . I HIGHLY recommend making one at least to check out the power and potential . Get a few coconuts , dry branches or #10 can of veggies and crack away . You'll become a believer .
I’d really like to know where one could purchase a brick? Thank you Sir.
Most hardware and home improvement stores sell Bricks :P
I imagine though you can find a Broch on Amazon, or on the website of the leather company he mentioned, Davidson Leather.
I assume theres some type of metal in those, and as a former bouncer, I have to say you better have keys attached to it if you want any chance of bringing that with you past someone with a handheld metal detector.
Benefit of doing so would also be, then you always have it on you while driving…
bandana + coins = effective and universally legal
well i guess the uk people have lost all thier rights to keep and bear arms, and now the police kick their asses.
You’re most certainly correct!
It's almost like this in every european country
Generally, English police do not carry guns..They probably do not have night-sticks. Possibly small saps. But I am not sure they have any weapons except pepper spray.

The precursor brass knuckle: the brody!!!
You can made an improvised weapon like #1 using a bicycle tyre tube and a D-size battery.
I just used a bike chain..with a padlock in one end if necessary 😅 totally legal to carry the chain in your jacket pocket but if the padlock is in contact with it that's illegal if you're out in the world. Personally never even used the padlock the bike chain gave two robbers a night to recover I mean remember... I lived in a shit neighbourhood so that chain was always inside the right side pocket of my m65 jacket button already open the padlock on the left side of course so they were never in contact but that chain as melee weapon was way to brutal so I've been looking for something hmh softer 😂

Pretty sure blackjacks are illegal to carry in your country. An alternative is to carry a bicycle crank. It'd most likely be aluminum, but it can make for a nasty hammer-strike and you can use it as a kubotan.

It would be nice if you could tell who used these weapons... police, detectives, street fighters or ?
To be quite honest in Victorian England, all 3! There was a big industry at the time of street defence / offence weapons. Often what you carried was related to your social station too. A gentleman might have a lead weight cane, a dock worker may have had a weighted rope (slung shot / monkey fist), a criminal looking to stun, rob and run would likely have picked a blackjack, a police officer was liable to have a truncheon and potentially a sap

This is a great video! What are the advantages of these weapons? Why would I want to carry one instead of a knife or a club? I see that they are concealable but so is a knife. Are there any other advantages?
Thanks to their weigthed and flexible construction, they hit much harder than a wooden club or truncheon. They a quick, have devastating power, and are easy to conceal and deploy. So they were prefered to solid clubs for that. You can parry and grapple with a club, they are tools for fighting, but this one you cannot, they are tools for hitting, but most people wanted to hit,not fight.
Knives leave cuts. Visible evidence with possible blood bourn pathogens. Blackjack generally would not produce visible evidence of use. This would make the blackjack preferable.
