    718 Boxster S, 242 laps on Ring, june 16 - july 23 2017; No crash.
Great car, no problems; 12810 km in Germany, 5041 km on the Ring. No issues. new tires and brake pads.
Sound is not a concern when going in circles. Dave from Montana USA.

The last comments are spot on. Until I started tracking this car, the only thing that really excited me was how it looked. After tracking it, well, I have to tell you, the car is astoundingly quick in the curves and the PDK shifting is absolutely sublime. Carreras really have to work hard to stay with this perfectly balanced car. When you drive this car home from your first track experience, you will have an epiphany - I promise. Tracking this car legitimizes everything that Porsche stands for in an automobile.

I completely agree. Made me seem like a better drive than I actually am lol. Porsche perfected this mid engine light weight car. So easy to drive and takes the corners so easily which allows you to put the power down easier on the straights

Agreed. The Porsche driving experiences at Silverstone, either bring your own car or borrow one show how capable this car is.
The drive home makes you want the tap the dash and tell it "good boy".

I have a 981 CGTS with 18K miles. YES - the passenger seatbelt buckle bounces between the door and the seat so i also click it in when someone isn't in the car. While I like my engine more than the new one, the car does everything absolutely great. Grocery getter, highway cruiser, or mountain roads. You definitely need to thrash it more. It carries so much speed into and through corners, you'll be keeping up with the guys on sport bikes. Especially with the gobs of low end torque you have. As for emotional connection - I also agree. Love my car. But then I took a drive in an F430. Oh boy. Enjoy your 360!

Sam, I had a Cayman S for two years and your comment on the lack of emotional attachment is right on. I never got into the spirit of the car even though it was fabulous to drive. I am just outside of NYC and I never, like you, thought I was able to really take advantage of the full capabilities of the car. I did have the attachment to the S2000 I owned, but not the Cayman. Keep the great videos coming. KO

If you’re not going to track it but want to enjoy the “sports car” part, you’ll do just fine with a base model without sport chrono (all models have normal and sport modes), and get some comfort options. The wrap looks nice but the metallics look better (though I do like lava orange and Miami blue). I have a 718 Boxster S (used to have a wonderful 987 Cayman). The Cayman is a beautiful design but the top-down capability of the Boxster adds an emotional edge you won’t find on the Cayman.

I push the passenger seat belt buckle all the way to the top, to the hole where the strap comes out of. It holds fast there and doesn't knock. 😉

  • @capuchinseven
    @capuchinseven 2 роки тому

Just got 42mpg average over 200 miles from my Cayman T yesterday, wasn't even driving "slow" either. Too late now of course as this car is long gone, but for anyone that ever sees this, the passenger seat belt has a little slide clip on it. You just slide that up and hold the buckle still at the top and it doesn't rattle.

  • @milkok.2867
    @milkok.2867 6 років тому

The passenger seat belt buckle knocking against the interior plastics is something that VW has solved by sewing a loop of the belt material on the belt. It acts as a buckle stop and there's that loop of belt between the buckle and the interior plastics, so the buckle can't knock against the plastics. Ingenious.

I live on the road and have worked in most of the major cities of the US. As such, a lightweight car with adequate power with a dash of sportiness is perfect. Fuel economy is important and of course insurance costs matter as well. So in some ways, this car is perfect for me. As it is, I drive a BMW M2. It has a rough ride but it fits the bill as well. If I was settled down then a regular high-performance car might be okay but the extra weight and expense might be tough to accept. To summarize, the 718 is not for everybody but for the right people, it would be a joy.

... i should add I drive an 11 year old 987 boxster... but i added a Remus exhaust and it transformed the engine note, I love the sound and could happily keep the car till I die... the noise gave me that tingle that made all the difference. it's no way near as fast as yours but it's not all about speed in my book.

  • @daniel-j-harris

Great vid, I've had mine for 16 months and its AMAZING! Miami blue ;)
The exhaust note isn't great but its much better in real life trust me people turn their heads when I start it up or rev it.
    SAM:
The seat belt I was told about when buying, you simply push it to the top and its fine.
Mine has rattles too! I got one fixed, something in the back panel work. Other one comes from parcel shelf, just tighten it up, it gets loose. And a bit of squeak from the seat adjuster near my shoulder. BUT then I get into my friends cars and theirs sound like cheap plastic rattling everywhere so we're just being perfectionists haha

I don't think you understand how much money UA-camrs make. A general amount is $2 per thousand views, although some have way higher cpm and some have less but being as Sam is highly family friendly I'd say it's on the high side. Especially if they're smart about how they approach sponsorships and brand deals. Sam seems like an intelligent guy, so I'm sure he's smart about his finances. If you think about financing cars, a few thousand dollars/pounds probably doesn't have a massive impact on his revenue every month.

Finally got around to test drives at the local dealer. Tried a pdk S and manual GTS. Plenty of power and it did not sound as horrible inside as it does driving by. But the turbo lag just saps the car of its essential goodness. This platform has always been defined by its responsiveness to driver input. Prefer any of the previous versions, or a 996 for that matter.

Lovely video summing up the Cayman. I think objectively it's a much more capable car than the 981 and the fact that you're using it so much is a testament to how good it is. You always hear people say how usable sports and supercars are these days but rarely will you ever see someone using them on a daily basis so I love that you're doing exactly that. And maybe it's not a car you're ever going to adore on the same level as your 360 for example but I do think there's another side to the Cayman that you're maybe yet to explore so I'd be totally happy with you keeping it for another 6 months or so, it's definitely one of my favourite cars that you've owned and that I've been most interested in.

2.5's real consumption is over the 3.4 during a test drive. I experienced it physically. The only improvement of consumption is on stable speed on motorway. Great. But we don't buy a Porsche for motorway.

Maybe the Non-S would have been better for the driving you have been doing. I am looking into getting a Cayman and everyone says to get the S model, but I would be daily driving it to work which is mainly highway driving and I do not plan on tracking it, so maybe the non-S would work for me as well? I can load up on nice interior options along with sports Chrono and PASM.

I just bought a 2018 Cayman S two weeks ago and put in just over 500 miles. I really love it. My first Cayman S was 2008 model then a 2012 Cayman R. I replaced the "little brother Porsche" with a 2015 Carrera with Aerokit package, PDK and Sport Chrono. After almost four years, I replaced it with the new 2018 Cayman S again with Sport Chrono and PDK. The Cayman S with all the performance options is definitely faster and handle better than the 2015 Carrera and the most important factor, it is US$35,000 cheaper!! The 4 cylinder Turbo charge engine is magnificent and I don't feel turbo lag at all. The mid engine configuration does provide great handling and has much better mileage than the Carrera. It is the perfect sport car for daily driving. Highly recommended.

Pull the seat belt end to the top and push the little plastic slider up underneath it so it gets held at the top where the shoulder is and that should stop it from rattling

Spray a small amount of silicone spray in the seat belt roller on the pillar and pull it out a few times. It'll spring back properly then and might stop it flopping in the wind lol

Hi Sam, thanks for the nice overview. Everything shows that the Cayman S is a practical car. The petrol consumption is pleasantly low, but not exceptionally low. It is not yet comparable with my fuel consumption in a 124 Spider 170 BHP. On a long trip through central Europe my consumption is around 45 mpg (petrol RON 98). And the 124 Spider also sounds a lot better than the Porsche. But you also make it clear to the viewer that in those 10,000 mls you have not built up an emotional bond with this car. I am looking forward to your next Daily Driver.

Sam, I got one of the last 981 Caymans about 18 months ago, and like you use it as a daily. After 23K Miles it is still amazing just how good it is at being a car. If I were you I be sure to drive it some on a warm dry roads over the spring and summer because during fall and winter it is hard to use the sports part of a modern Porsche. I am a hold and keep type of driver and this one will likely be in my possession for a very long time, since it is nice to have a small light car that can do anything.

Don't replace the 718 cayman s with the new vantage Sam!, just rewrap it to mettallic orange, install a loud aftermarket exhaust and gorgeous aftermarket wheels.. It would be a dream daily you would ever own and it is also a perfect car to sit next to the ferrari 360 in front of your house..

The passenger seatbelt on my Mercedes A45 rattles on the side of the passenger seat so it’s not just Porsche & still German. Mercedes have been good enough to make the side of the passenger seat magnetic so it will stick to it & not rattle. Not sure if Porsche would have thought of the same but worth a look 👍🏾

I like the original colour - it grows on you. In fact, isn’t it strange how we acclimatise to new car shapes and colours over time. For example, I thought the Meccan looked strange when it first came out, but now think it looks really cool. Strange the way the brain works.

Performance wise. Thumbs up for the 718, especially S trim. Damn good in that area. Fun? Overall enjoyment? Yes, but I still like the 981S. It just feels funner...probably the 6 sound.

That's the thing about modern Porsche cars, they are competent as all heck and absolutely as capable as you will ever need a sports car to be. But maybe they are lacking a little bit in emotion because they are so buttoned down and efficient at what they do. Still, great review Sam. I appreciate your work.

OMFG, YES to th’seatbelt battering against the passenger side, Sir! I’m genuinely aggrieved and sad to see they haven’t sorted that out! Baxter’ gets right on my fricken wick! He is forgiven however, for being oh so super, squat’n’saucy! ;) In related news: Bax is a 2014 S with Chrono, and we’ve currently done just over 15,000 together - the fuel economy I find staggeringly good for what he is (450 miles a tank if ridden soft like an Eeyore, hardly half that if I’m galloping along like I’m Shadowfax), so I TOTALLY felt you during your rhapsody at that! I was like, “Yes YES! Aren’t they, though!”. I enjoy driving pretty much anything with an engine, so I’d love to have a play in the 718 for its drive and handling (interested in what the shifts feel like in this comparably via paddle, due to the switch to turbo), as well as the increase in mpg and whether it feels like a worthy trade from the six cylinder in daily life as a ‘road car sports car’ type thang of an experience! Having a nose for its’ ‘MmmOOFishness’, any lover of this road-smoochin’ manufacturer knows - seems to go without saying; Porsche pretty much full stop demands my attention aesthetically, irrelevant of the model, colour etc (or potential moron driving it! And also for these brackets... good grief and go you on that colour - it’s absolutely delicious 😋). Mostly I’m intrigued after knowing Bax this long, one of his successor’ feels like just to be in, inside the cab tootling along on a journey. I can’t say I aren’t equally intrigued to know, if the cup holders that scare the shite out of me every time I ‘click’ them (click? You call that a ‘click’, Porsche? Cos I call it a scary-ass fucking CLACK!) out to use them, has been softened somewhat 😬😂😂😂
Y’video was awesome...thank you, thankyooow! 😁👌🏼 I hope you continue to enjoy your Cayman if you have still have it 😁

I have an 08 987 Cayman (with a proper flat 6 and accompanying exhaust note!) - agree about useability - + they are an absolute bargain for the time being, and will shortly be rising in value. Mine also PASM, Sports Chrono plus, Bose, sat nav etc.. all for less than 20k.
