One note: if you try to pull up a PSP game and get a black screen, this is a known issue (and a bug in Android). Open up PPSSPP, go to the Games tab, then tap on the "Browse" button (it has a folder icon), which will bring up your Files browser. Browse to the root of your SD card, then go to ROMs > psp and select "Use this Folder" and confirm. That should reset the file location and allow games to launch from ES-DE.
Bro I got the same problem with ppsspp on Reset collection (another android launcher), in a recent update ppsspp must have changed something cause it's messed up with all launchers now
@@Happy-Hunter89 You can just uninstall and Reinstall PPSSPP, that's what I had to do. Just make sure when you open PPSSPP again that you point it at the folder that has the folder for your save data in it (labeled PSP) your old save data in it.

Two comments though, placing the ES-DE application data directory on an SD card leads to performance issues on some devices, so if ES-DE starts or runs very slowly it's a good idea to move this folder to internal storage instead. And launching native Android apps and games has actually been supported in ES-DE as of the 3.0.2-21 release, meaning ES Applauncher is only needed for importing your apps and games and not for launching them. I anyway plan to add a built-in import tool in a future version, hopefully for the 3.2.0 release.
@@satyampaswan3995ye you can. You can also individually scrap as well between the 2 scrapers I managed to get a decent amount of artwork scraped and even a couple of videos. Anything missing you can add yourself. Just imitate the file structure as it is for all the other systems

Yessss, this launcher breathed new life into my RP2S after using Daijisho for so long. Im a big fan of it, I used an old video guide of yours to set that up and it works amazing.
Nah get a good android phone if you don't have one already. Get a good controller like the gamesir G8 or even better but soon to be released unless you were a kickstarter supporter, the abxylute s9.

OP is just saying that the official preferred name of the project is ES-DE or ES-DE Frontend, not fully spelled out (i.e. ES-DE vs EmulationStation Desktop Edition). It's not a big deal since the developer has said that it's acceptable to use the full name for the time being.
Thanks Russ. I've just now finally set up my Odin 2 with ES-DE as the frontend. For a long time, I'd just stuck with the stock android launcher because I'm comfortable with it. But, I've finally given in and consolized the Odin. (I think it helped that I'd finally decided to make this my main emulation/android gaming device, so it felt worth the time investment.)

I just recently picked up a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, and while I love it, I haven’t been impressed with the main front ends (Daijisho and RetroidLauncher) for it and missed the ES front ends on my other handhelds. Daijisho is able to filter games by genre though. Downloaded game metadata already includes the genres. Hopefully in a future ES-DE update that can be used to quickly create collections per genre.

I just the es is generally better in almost every way. Looks nicer and is much more customisable. Easier to navigate. Dajisho may be a bit easier to set up id say that's all it has over es

I have bought the Odin 2 because you said it is still the king. And it really was. The problem is the one I bought got an issue (defective right analog stick) when it arrived. The sad thing is that it was their last stock. I only held it for 2 days and 1 night but I still miss it until now. I should have been setting up this new guide. So sad. Wow! Actually learned something new. Didn't know you could re-scrape individual games, and refine the search while doing so. I have a couple games in my collection that I have never been able to properly scrape. Every time I wanted to try again, I'd have to shut down my RP4P, pop out the SD card, try changing the filename to something that would hopefully search properly, put the SD card back in, reboot my RP4P, and then try scraping again. Which was a major pain, so I eventually gave up. Just now I tried re-scraping one of those problem games, and after a couple of rounds of refining the search by tweaking the name a bit, was finally able to get it matched. Super convenient!
This is a great video, thank for sharing! Now with ES Applauncher I can use Winlator directly within ES! It would be cool to have a setup video for Winlator on Android gaming devices, so that we can play .exe games on these devices
Minimized scraper option on all versions of ES-DE would be amazing... it's nice to configure or browse your library while it scrapes. Plus, it would up scraping speed.

Daijisho: Yuzu has been shutdown, but people still can use it and get it, so ill keep it as an option because its really no trouble. ES-DE: Yuzu has been shutdown, so im going to wipe all traces of it from the frontend and make you have to do a workaround to select it. Ive never understood this logic.
@@eurosoe Sure, but having Yuzu be selectable out of the box isnt breaking any kind of taboo. I shouldnt be having to do work arounds like that for a PAID frontend.
Es-de is a much more well known frontend. They just don't want to deal with any possible headaches. Would you rather they do this or they get shutdown?
FYI, for anyone trying to use this on a TV with Samsung Dex, you will need to use version 3.0.2 or below. Version 3.0.3 included home app functionality, and Samsung Dex doesn't allow for apps with Home App functionality. I really hope they branch this in the future so we can get updates here in the future (or Samsung starts allowing launchers to be used in Dex.)
The setup process is the same on an android box such as the shield as it is here. If you're on a pc it's not that different either tbh apart from you need to set where your emulators are
I've been able to set up a few devices for gaming in the living room. I'm more curious what shades and or filters are widely used for big screen gaming.

Can you store roms for different systems in different locations? E.g older systems on microsd but only ps2 specifically on internal storage? And would you be updating your written guide for Android? Think there plenty of options such as esde, beacon etc not mentioned

Thanks Russ for your continued fantastic efforts! You sold me on an RG351P way back. I recently built an RG556 with Daijishō and loved that. Now you've got me wanting ES-DE on my new Odin 2. This retro hobby is so addictive! I've got the RG35XX SP, RG40XX H and R36S still to build too. I'm running out of space for these handhelds...but don't worry, I'll make more! If only there was more time! I'd spend some playing...like on the RG552 that I still love too! Argh!!! Just keep them videos rolling! Big thanks!
I'm still having a lot of trouble adding the custom systems for some reason. I added the files, but when I launch es-de, it still doesn't show any switch options.
Are there any plans on making a video that goes over how to configure ES-DE to pull from multiple directories? I looked it up and apparently it IS possible even though the app only lets you set a single directory in the settings, but it requires creating a custom XML file or something like that. The ES Applauncher solves one of the big shortcomings that ES-DE had on Android, but I'm still partial to using Daijisho on my Odin 2 Mini since my ROM library is pretty big and is split between the internal storage and an SD card. My only other solution would be to buy a 1tb SD card and call it a day, but that's about $90 which...hurts.
I have set up everything on my device, and it works wonderfully. There’s only one problem: every time I reboot the device, it starts the setup process again. When I click cancel, I am taken to my configured system. Why does the setup start every time I reboot?

@@milesharris249 PPSSPP Gold just black screened for me. Had to use non-gold PPSSPP which worked.
I've done this like 6 times and it didn't help, I still just get a black screen on PSP games.
Well it *opens* PPSSPP now at least. But thats all 🤷♂️

If you play games that require low latency like fighting/rhythm games, I suggest the ODIN 2 MINI. The latency is incredibly low on the new screen

I have this exact setup on my Nvidia Shield. Works a treat - albeit switch / PS2 / Wii emulation isn't worth it.
I feel it would be very similar to what this video cover, as ES DE is available for all major OSs

Hey Russ, great video. Thanks also for mentioning how to migrate with ES DE. Is there an option to migrate an entire Android Setup, ie, HD Textures, Saves, Emulators, etc by copying. Indeed I think more guys are now checking out different handhelds so please indicate how we can make moving stuff around as easy as possible. Thanks
Thanks Russ for your continued fantastic efforts! You sold me on an RG351P way back. I recently built an RG556 with Daijishō and loved that. Now you've got me wanting ES-DE on my new Odin 2. This retro hobby is so addictive! I've got the RG35XX SP, RG40XX H and R36S still to build too. I'm running out of space for these handhelds...but don't worry, I'll make more! If only there was more time! I'd spend some playing...like on the RG552 that I still love too! Argh!!! Just keep them videos rolling! Big thanks!

I'm still having a lot of trouble adding the custom systems for some reason. I added the files, but when I launch es-de, it still doesn't show any switch options.

Are there any plans on making a video that goes over how to configure ES-DE to pull from multiple directories? I looked it up and apparently it IS possible even though the app only lets you set a single directory in the settings, but it requires creating a custom XML file or something like that. The ES Applauncher solves one of the big shortcomings that ES-DE had on Android, but I'm still partial to using Daijisho on my Odin 2 Mini since my ROM library is pretty big and is split between the internal storage and an SD card. My only other solution would be to buy a 1tb SD card and call it a day, but that's about $90 which...hurts.

I have set up everything on my device, and it works wonderfully. There’s only one problem: every time I reboot the device, it starts the setup process again. When I click cancel, I am taken to my configured system. Why does the setup start every time I reboot?
