This song has, in its chorus, one of the most glorious (and infectious) pop hooks in pop/rock history. I could hear it a million times and never get tired of it.
💜 Damn! I was 13 when this song came out. It seemed like all radio stations were constantly playing it and MTV had the video on heavy rotation. It was even the number one most requested video, on MTV, for a few months. Really nice reaction. Sweet memories.🤘
Richard Page had previously worked as a session musician (for Quincy Jones) and had composed for Michael Jackson, Rick Springfield, Donna Summer, Kenny Loggins, Al Jarreau, and many more.
No it's pronounced Ki-ree-ay. Kýrie, eléison means "Lord, have mercy" in Greek, and is a part of many liturgical rites in Eastern and Western Christianity. According to Page the entire song is, essentially, a prayer. was an American rock band from Phoenix, Arizona, active from 1982 until 1990. The band consisted of Richard Page on lead vocals and bass guitar. This band was big in the 80s and this song and the song BROKEN WINGS were their biggest hits.
@@afuzzycreature8387 No if you look up the word it shows it as: Kyrie" (/ˈkiːri.eɪ/). For the pronunciation. There's an "AY" sound at the end of Kýrie, and at the beginning of eléison.
As part of the Greek formula Kyrie eleison (“Lord, have mercy”), the word is used as a preliminary petition before a formal prayer and as a congregational response in the liturgies of many Christian churches.Ju
@@afuzzycreature8387 Ah Sorry nope - U C 1. I knew the song in the 80s on the 2. my HS show then also performed in a show & 3rd. in been said most of my life in Church
I was dancing/singing the ENTIRE time, this is literally one of my fave songs of ALL time. I mainly have 2 fave songs by Mr Mister which is this one and Broken Wings
Top three??? WOW... This is my #1- carried me through a lot in life. Lord had Mercy on me and heard me sing this millions of times. #2 I would have to say Broken Wings. It's the Thunderbird he is driving in that video, but also the words. GREAT. Then I have to be different here. If you want to be astonished...watch Ringo Star's All-Star band with Richard Page (the singer and songwriter you hear in Mr. Mr) sing this song 30+ years later and PUNCH IT almost BETTER than when he was young..have fun.!!
From the Greek "Kyrie eleison" - pronounced "KEER-ee-ay il-AY-iss-on", meaning "Lord, have mercy" The lyrics are a prayer. They're literally saying "Lord have mercy down the road that I must travel. Lord have mercy through the darkness of the night. Lord have mercy where I'm going will you follow. Lord have mercy on a highway in the Light!"
Haha forgot about this song. Another great 80s tune that doesn’t really make much sense lyrically but gets you moving. Broken wings is a great song too.
They were kinda mean when I met them. I said “hey, aren’t you Mr. mister?” They said “that’s Mr. Mr. Mister to you pal!” Been waiting awhile to use that one.
This is how I know I’m super old....this was such a staple of the 80’s, it’s very hard to accept that you never heard it before (meaning it’s time has past without y having noticed).
Top 3 Fave Mr Mister tunes: • Broken Wings • Kyrie • Power Over Me You DEFINITELY NEED to hear Broken Wings, & might want to try • Is It Love These guys were OUTSTANDING Studio Musicians from the late 70s into early 80s singing backup vocals for the likes of Kenny Loggins & Al Jarreau (to name a few) who transformed themselves into this Platinum Record-selling group of the Big 80s. I saw them in person 3 times in Los Angeles (1986/1987) & they're just as good in person as on the album - if not better at times
This isn't a knock because I don't know your religious background but the first page of the christian mass you'll see it after the table of contents "Kyrie eleison" "Lord have mercy". Part of a triple in there. "Lord, have mercy" [Christe, eleison] "Christ, have mercy" "Lord, have mercy". The song then itself can be seen as a prayer.
@@afuzzycreature8387 Thanks. I do indeed come from a secular country so we don't have any religious teaching in our schools and the majority of the population are not religious.
I'm so happy you finally reacted to this song, Anton! It's one of my all time 80's favourites. It's not just the great, brilliant music... it is the lyrics, too. You should look into the lyrics more because they have A LOT of depth and meaning once you understand the message. Kyrie sounds upbeat and almost euphoric because the lyrics convey a sense of HOPE and longing - for the future, mystery for what will follow... and nostalgia for the road we've already travelled. It's an uplifting song about life's journey... even without the obvious spiritual overtones of the phrase: "Kyrie Eleison" which translates as Lord Have Mercy. And yes, it's pronounced KEE-RI
Kyrie, the vocative case of the Greek word kyrios (“lord”). Alassia means mercy - So yeah the song has a great vibe and feels good because it’s all about this guys soul journey through life and asking god to have mercy on him while he travels through life and some of the darkest nights etc

Some people are down on this song BECAUSE of the positivity. I can't say I sympathize. This is just a great song with a good feel and good message. Wish they had done more. "Broken Wings" is great as well, but a lot else doesn't stand out.
#1) Kyrie, #2) The Border, #3) Broken Wings. The Border is, to me, one of the most beautiful combinations of music and lyrics ever made. Still astounds me that it didn't rise higher.
On a related note... I find it interesting that musicians from countries with very strong accents seem to sing in a neutral accent. ABBA, Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, Men at Work...
I saw them in concert at Six Flags in Atlanta back in the mid 80’s when this song and “Broken Wings” were at the top of the charts. Their lead singer, Richard Page, is 68 years old now but his voice sounds exactly the same and he can still hit every note. Check out some of his live performances here on UA-cam. An amazing singer!
Huge drum sound! It's all Phil Collin's fault... by mistake, his console was set to an overly high compression rate passing through a gate. It sounded good. Soon a company made an FX rack with it and everybody started using it.
Okay FFS stop taking over the song - & I love when those NOT of the 80s are some how surprised to hear the quality powerful keyboards - - 3:31 - JC really okay then I guess not much of a church goer or FM radio listener as it is played occasionally
You need to check out the I run to her from same album beautiful singing on Richard's vocals slow but beautiful song, also Broken Wings of course & Is It Love. Most women wish their man could sing as well as he does, check him out with the Ringo Starr band 2012-2013 on UA-cam.. He performs Broken Wings & Kyrie live, the man is 69 yrs this year God given talent no doubt. You should check out his earlier band Pages, very Steely Dan, Pablo Cruise, Kenny Loggins, Doobie Brothers Michael McDonald sounding stuff, great vocals. He sang backing vocals for Kenny Loggins, REO Speedwagon, & Whiyesnake to name a few, guy is a musical genius
Kyrie Eleison = Lord, have mercy
Great song 🙏🏻
Amen
It also sounds exactly like, "carrying a lazer!!" 8)
Thanks
Richard Page ...one if the best voices of the 80's
yup...
Amazing 80s tune... it is so catchy! Anton check out “Broken Wings” by them... superb.
One of my favorites by them. 😍
I always loved this great song. Their song Broken Wings is incredible ❤️
Kyrie in Greek means, Lord have mercy, a lurtigical prayer in both Eastern and Western Christianity # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986
Thank you for telling me what the heck that means I’m wondering that for months now Since I started listening to this song again
Kirie = Lord, Eleison = Have Mercy

Not many rock bands can sing “Lord have mercy” throughout a song and have it be a mainstream hit.
Kylie Eleison = Lord have mercy 💗

One of the most underrated songs in my opinion. Love it !❤️
Greek Kyrie eleison = kee-ree-ay ay-lay-ee-sawn = Lord, Have Mercy. Part of the Penitential Rite of Mass from Apostolic times.

Oh man just saw the title of this video and instantly had the song in my head. One of the songs which brings back childhood memories.
I believe Broken Wings was s the most popular Mr Mister song, same album from 1985 !!! 😇

if i’m not mistaken, richard page was offered to play in the bands toto and chicago and turned them down for this album.
We are still waiting for Kiss Me Deadly by Lita Ford !!! 😇
Broken Wings is amazing, too.
If Sting and Phil Collins had a baby it would be the lead singer.

It is a great song. Broken wings is another of their huge hits. It is a phenomenal song with a slower, more earnest vibe.
