It wasn't until I was converted to Christianity in college that I learnt what Kyrie eleison meant. That brought me a whole new appreciation for the song.
Richard Page, bassist and lead vocalist is a great writer and singer. After Mr. Mister , Richard went off and wrote and recorded contemporary gospel. There are a lot of religious aspects to the music of Mr. Mister. They're back touring again, and I've heard, back in the studio for a new Mr. Mister release that will pick up where they left off, keeping the core of their sound intact. you have no idea how much you have given me a trip down memory lane with your '80s reactions. I appreciate your honesty about the generation of music I grew up on. I just finished a 12 hour shift in law enforcement. this gave me such joy and amusement I enjoyed staying up late. keep up the reactions and more importantly, your work with helping people. I'm very impressed with your maturity and open mindedness. keep it up.
Ok darling, YES I loved this song when it came out in the '80s. I was in college for Nursing school and raising 3 little boys at the same time. I loved this song as it was an anthem of my heart and still is. Now I am old and approaching my 62 birthday and just celebrated my 45th wedding anniversary. I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW FAST TIME HAS FLOWN AWAY AND TO HEAR THIS AGAIN IS LIKE A TIME WARP FOR MY SOUL. This song saw the beginning of my career as a Labor & Delivery nurse, pediatric trauma and NICU nurse and now, the retirement after 30 yrs. I still love this song, and all of Richard Page's songs but this song holds a special place in my heart...Christ did indeed have mercy on me and gave me the desires of my heart. " My heart is old, it holds my memories. My body burns a gemlike flame, somewhere between the soal and soft machine, it's where I find myself again."
I grew up with this song...togehter with songs like Africa, Rosanna, In the air tonight, David Bowies Let's Danse. And so on. It is so cool to watch your face during the song. And it's so nice to see a young person recognizing quality music. Thumbs up for you!!
How likeable and refreshing are YOU, #ModernRenaissanceMan? I LIKE IT! First time I'm seeing you and it's because I always loved "Kyrie" (which by this time, I'm sure you learned many details about, but...back to YOU)! FIRST off, no other channel I've ever seen has asked people to 'get to know me before subscribing'...SAY WHAT?! That's awesome! I was basically done with 'reaction' videos but you're different...not superficial, not chatty and interruptive during the tune, you're not overly expressive or interactive with your audience during the song (soooo many 'reaction peeps' could learn a lot from you)...you're really listening. Big respect on this...well done! Blessings on you and yours, is my prayer. BTW, now deep in his 60's, singer and bass guitarist Richard Page can still sing this and sound just like he did then!
Wow, there’s only one thing that made me bliss out from the true positivity of this song and that’s your reaction to it! Your reaction is authentic and wonderful! Love the song!
I’m 45, so I never got to go to a Queen concert, but still love them... and I know lots of reaction videos are for them or country... that’s awesome .. but Thanks for doing the videos with the artists I grew up on that are great in their own way, Mr. Mister, Bon Jovi, Poison, George Michael, Bruce Hornsby , Mr Big, Garth Brooks, George Strait, etc .. all of which like you say, CAN actually sing , harmonize and play... so glad a newer generation gets to hear, experience and appreciate all of this. Thanks again !!
George Michael was a real gem of a singer his voice is so soothing to me...in the same way Luther Vandross was...Bruce Hornsby is a genius..but Mr Mister..my fav band in the world!
This has always been my absolute FAVORITE Mr. Mister song! Thank you for reviewing this! Lead singer/bassist Richard Page also appeared in one of Ringo Starr's "All Star Band" venues and performed this song, accompanied by several rock legends.
First time i come across your channel, and you're reacting to one of my favourite songs?! My man, you could not have introduced yourself better! Goddamn son! Glad ya liked it, this shit was the soundtrack to the best summer of my life (so far) and i always get so fucking stoked when i hear it. Thrilled that you could appreciate it and the artistic talent behind it so much as well! And you're absolutely right about the 80's vibe, this is the real shit and you were spot on. Mid 1980's this came out, waaaaay before i was born. But hell, this shit is my JAM! Gonna go watch some other videos of yours before i decide to subscribe, but first impressions matter; and you've made a bloody good one.
Thanks for sharing your reaction to this song , my ministry / music friend , it was really fun watching / sharing your reaction !! I've only watched a very few videos of the "reaction" type but I have to admit I'm liking the idea...it's actually good fun. I learned something for the first time as well...that "kyrie" is defined in a phrase that means "Lord have mercy" from some church's historical records...for decades I thought this name in the song was about a girl... great to learn something that boosts my faith a teensie...thanks again for posting this !!
For the longest time I thought they were saying "carry a laser". I think it really adds to the song Carry a laser down the road that I must travel Carry a laser through the darkness of the night Carry a laser, where I'm going will you follow Carry a laser on a highway in the light. That's pretty bad ass to just be walking around strapped with a laser.
I was a teenager at he time this song was released.. what I remember about this song was the different sound of the keyboard and the great harmony with a very catching chorus. I never knew what Kyrie Eleison meant until a few years ago, since we’ve been praying it a lot during Mass. It so happened that the radio station played this song and I was happy to hear again after so many decades! They mentioned the definition of those words & I was stunned to know this great song had such profound meaning!
1985/86. I was 15 when this came out. Great harmonies and great energy. I remember this on mtv and on the music program SkyTrack on the British sky channel. We on the European continent could receive british tv for 3 years now. This is better than anything Maroon 5 will ever have to offer. Classic 80s rock song. The titel does have some sort of meaning to it. Let me play the song again, always makes me feel good.
The guys were all top professional session musicians that decided to do their own thing. I saw them multiple times, even Richard Page, the lead singer alone, their voices are the real deal. This song came out in 1985 and auto tune wasn't used until 1998. Page was a session player for Quincy Jones, and wrote and composed for Michael, Al Jarreau and many more. I got to talk with them, nice guys. This was the huge when I was in high school, reminds me of great times with best friends, it was part of our life soundtrack.
I like two things about music, excellence and originality. Mr. Mister in this song and Broken Wings were crazy good, wonderfully pitched, paced, and harmonized. Lord have mercy....
This was a great summer song.. a joyful, happy tune and very uplifting. When it came on the radio you would clap along and shout it out along with the singer.
laura cosby one of my friends was pregnant when this song was popping, and she named her daughter Kyrie. Lol 😂 we lost track shortly after because her husband was military and she moved to Japan! But I heard years later through a friend that she had another daughter and named her Topanga! 😂
Mr. Mister were so popular, I remember them when I was a kid on MTV when they played music vidoes! They can sing, for real! Lord have mercy on my soul (Kyrie eliason).
@MRM... this song inspired hope, peace in a time of my life dealing with a narcissist marriage... Conflict between my promise to God to honor my commitment... or leave. I was also struggling with a job that was placing allot more work on my plate too. Actually, my doctor advised me to choose one or I would end up in a padded room (yeah I know it sounds extreme, but no place to relax and breathe..) Of course, I chose to try to save the marriage. Long story short, I finally woke up in a cold sweat one night, knowing I couldn't envision another 10-20 or more years in a broken situation. I did leave, but not until 1993. I still listen to this song for inspiration, prayer for guidance over the decades of my life. May "Lord have mercy" on all of humanity that asks and accepts it. ❤️🙏
Yes I was a teen in the 80’s and thankful! Sooo many great songs, artists’, bands! Broken wings was definitely my fav of Mr. Mister and also loved this one- ❤️🤘🏼✌️
One of my very favorite songs ever. Lord Have Mercy, down the road that I must travel....I always sang this song in prayer, especially during the tougher moments of life's journey.
One of my all time favorites! Thanks for sharing! You are right it was in the eighties. The words stand for Lord have Mercy. I was raised Catholic and when I first started going to Mass it was in Latin. This is what our liturgy started with. So that is how I knew what it meant .Our Mass went to all English in the 70's.
My head snapped the first time I heard this song. I would never have placed the phrase, Kyrie Eleison, in a rock song. I had not heard it since the Catholic mass quit using Latin.
ahhhh the 80s ....it was a glorious time to be alive musicly speaking.....hell i would go back in a heart beat if it were possible to do so.......oh and the way you wait till the end of the song before giving your reaction is in my humble opinion....THE BEST WAY TO DO IT MAN...you rock my dude
Oh yeah love, love this song. Cant remember when I first heard it but I remember driving to and from the beach on hot summer days with my best friend listening and jamming to it. Love the music it stays in your mind. Thanks for this.
So here I am, 3 years late to the party. This just popped up in my feed (Probably because I just binged-listened to hours of Marc Cohn, Bruce Hornsby, and yes, Mr. Mister). This song was like an anthum for me in 1985. I graduated High School and began (what has become) a life-long career in the military. This song has Faith. It has energy, and it has the amazing ability to make you feel good, no matter where you are or what you're doing. I'm glad you discovered Kyrie. I encourage you to look more into Richard Page and his work. He's performed with everyone from Twisted Sister to Michael Jackson. Solid artist with a heart and passion for music that inspires.
If you are a metaphysical person or not, like myself, I find this very uplifting . I have great memories as a pre teen listing to this song, yet again, in the back of my dad's car on long journeys.
Thanks for doing this reaction I was a teenager when this came out.... loved both the song and video. And when Im sad... I only need to play this song and I feel better. xxx Suzette from The Netherlands 🤘 💟
I had a conversation with my wife recently about the positive vibe of a lot of the 80’s tunes. I’m an 80’s kid and there just ain’t nothing out there like 80’s music! God bless brother!
If anything takes immediately to the 80's it is the long overcoat, even if it is not down to the ankles ala Duran Duran / Rio album cover. :) The drummer Pat Mastelotto went on to play e.g with David Sylvian and in King Crimson when the tour backing band of Sylvian's including one Robert Fripp turned into a new incarnation of King Crimson. The bassist / singer Richard Page has collaborared with Japanese ambient musician Kitaro. He sang on "Caravan" which originally is an instrumental theme made for documentary "The Silk Road".
I have heard this before, but never seen the video. Loooove it ! These guys are really lucky to have found each other because singing high harmony like that for a male vocalist is extremely rare. (Oh, there's some that can hit it for a second or two, but not like this, and certainly not change key on the fly like that. ( I know, because I get asked to cover this sort of thing and most people can't do actual harmony to save their life. ) I hope they do record more material, they are really awesome together..
Another great reaction to an awesome Group Ty, 😀😊😀 (If you have not already looked it up, 😀) "Kyrie Eleison" is Greek for "Lord, have mercy." It is used as a prayer in both Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox services. Greek was the original language of the New Testament and it was later translated in to Latin. ... But that happened three years before writing 'Kyrie,' and had nothing to do with that song. Same thought process of thinking it was 'carry a laser' as previously commented😀😁😂😁😀 Have a great rest of your week, 😀
I loved it .... I remember it from years ago. And when was reading a book of prayers it clicked it I was revisiting mighty words I had enjoyed once before I was a amazing moment to hear the song once again. Kyrie Elesion .
I totally remember, while skiing at Shawnee Ski Area in high school, they would blast this and other sweet 80s tunes from big ass speakers on top of the lodge. Whenever I hear this song, I fondly recall bombing down that mountain with not a care in the world. I love it!
I was just entering my teenage years when this was new and I remember hearing it in my sisters car driving to and from school, etc. brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for the video!
This song, and Broken Wing, are both iconic songs, a little after my teen years though, but I loved them both and the lead singer, and band were rad.The clarity and purity of his voice plus the harmonies are spot on.Nothing fake here, just a little editing room floor and what you see and hear is what you got. Amein Brother.🤘🏻
This song reminds me of my high school years...since I went to catholic schools all my life I knew what Kyrie meant and it was great that a song with such a good message was popular. I love it to this day. Please react to the Cure 'Just Like Heaven', another favorite of mine. 😊
Kyrie Eleison ... "Lord have Mercy". @MRM.... Richard Page ruled Mr Mister. Yeesss... 80s AMAZING song. (I worked in a radio station..) Still listen to this classic in 2020. 👍🙏♥️
That atmospheric sound from the '80s is music being designed for the Walkman and Headphones era! This music was made to enjoy on headphones and still is enjoyable to hear on headphones and earbuds today! and also sounds great on surround sound systems!
Kyrie Eleison is Greek for Lord Have Mercy, as others have explained in the comments, it is the response of the faithful to almost every prayer in the Orthodox Church; when we pray for one another, the priests and bishops, the world, peace, the sick and the departed. When the Orthodox pray this we mean Lord in the sense of the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the One; the Thrice Holy One in Essence and Undivided.
@@RobinLull To the point, the fact is that kyrie eleison (pronounced as s, as in season not as z, as in zero), is ancient Greek language. Latin comes from ancient Greek.
I was 20 when this song came out. I was in college where I was supposed to be a computer programming major, but I couldn't stay out of music class. The amount of time needed to studying math for computer programming and practicing and playing concerts in jazz band and marching in the marching band burned me out. One day, while trying to decide what I really wanted to do I heard this song while driving to work. At the end of the semester I left school and started working full time. Two years later I joined the Army. While in the Army I submitted my first novel for publication. It was rejected, but writing has given me the strength to keep going when things got really difficult. And when things got really bad, this song comes out of nowhere and I remember what passion really means and I start to get back on track.
Loved this song when it first came out, you know there are songs you hear which take you back to a different time and place, this is one for me. It came out when i was in my early teens, such a great part of my life. Sometimes i really miss those days, as an old man now i wonder where the time has gone, i look around and see young kids that age and think, i was you not long ago, but it was long ago. I now have a daughter that age, but sometimes i am that age again :D
Richard Page lived, breathed, slept music coming up, and had already had a prominent band before this band was formed, had been a backing singer to many acts including Madonna, was offered the lead singer told to both Toto and Chicago which he turned down because he believed this band would take off, and it did Big time! I loved this when it came out because of the perfect production and musicianship!
The '70s is where 'arena rock' was born. The '80s...it was perfected. 'Kyrie Eleison' means "Lord have mercy", and is from a Gregorian (monk) chant. Instrumentation was recorded first with a 'dummy' lead vocal. Backing voices were next. We used to do it with many people surrounding one mic...then sing it again...that's where you hear the natural chorus effect. Finally, the 'dummy' lead vocal was scrapped, replacing it with a 'keeper'. Keep up the good work...
I recommend you listen to their live concert from the 80’s in UA-cam. They sound just like this with great harmony and the powerful singing by lead singer Richard Page.
I saw this band in concert as the warm up act for Adam Ant one week before this song hit the radio waves in California. They put on a great performance for being such a new band.
Hey, Man! I was in high school when this came out. i am a music minister's kid. Ty---it means "God Have Mercy". Richard Page is the bass player----he was asked to join two groups: Chicago, after Peter Cetera left, and Toto, after Bobby Kimball left. He turned both of them down----to do Mr. Mister. stuff. Check out the record this tune comes from, "Welcome to the Real World". Richard is on toru with RINGO STARR's all star band. (YEAH, THAT RINGO STARR!)..... Keep listening. PS: AUTO-TUNE WAS USED BUT ONLY WHEN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. THE REST OF THIS WAS DONE IN A LEGIT REAL STUDIO, SOMETIMES DOUBLE AND TRIPLE TRACKED, AND SOME TUNES TOOK 3 DAYS TO FINISH. THAT WAS BACK WHEN STUDIO PLAYERS HAD 3 and 4 gigs a DAY. The industry has changed so much! Keep listening to the older tunes; no matter what genre. Mr. Mister was one of those very talented groups. Chicago, Toto, Mr. Mister, Genesis, Kool and the Gang, Earth Wind and Fire,, Mike and the Mechanics, Steve Winwood, those are who I heard in high school and college. MANY others.
Oh I love these 80s flashback videos! I had this cassette and I wore it out a couple times and had to buy it again. I love them! It's cool to hear that they're going on the road again. I hope to see them live. I didn't get to see much live acts in high school because we lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I did see REO Speedwagon with Richard Marx opening when I was a senior in 1986. Keep the 80s coming back!
Kyrie means "Lord have mercy," it's Greek. I'd love you to react to Christopher Tin - Baba Yetu, it was the first ever song for a video game to get nominated and win a grammy award.
The first time I heard this song, I was in a cab coming home from the train station. It was a Sunday, and I thought the cabbie was listening to a Christian station. He wasn't. I've always loved the song, from that first surprise listen. I was living in Germany. The cold war was still on. A couple of months earlier, I'd seen parts for Patriot (nuclear) missiles diverted through the town where I was living. This song gave me hope for mercy and a better world. A couple of months later my sister told me that a friend of hers complained about "the nonsense syllables" in the chorus. Sis explained to her the whole "Lord, have mercy" part of it.
Lord, have mercy. It is a prayer every time I hear this one. In my tradition, we say lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. But this song gives me feelings about all that. Years ago I never knew what they were saying. Now I do.
People didn't use auto tune in the 80s. People actually had to know how to sing.
Auto-tune or a variation of it was used in the 80's and 70's by maybe a handful of artists and groups, but it was rare.
Richard page knows how to sing. I love his voice

Mr. Mister sang two of my top 10 favorite songs of the 80's..Kyrie and Broken Wings. They still are in my favorite songs of all time.
Broken Wings next from Mr Mister
you have no idea how much you have given me a trip down memory lane with your '80s reactions.
What a beautiful comment. God bless you.
I just saw this on your page @MRM. I remember this from mass. And Mr Ty "LORD HAVE MERCY" on you. keep up the good works!!
I think it really adds to the song
Carry a laser down the road that I must travel
Carry a laser through the darkness of the night
Carry a laser, where I'm going will you follow
Carry a laser on a highway in the light.
That's pretty bad ass to just be walking around strapped with a laser.

😁Sorry bud... or not...
😂😂😂😂😂
Omfg!!! Funny as hell!!! Thats a new one & awesome dude .. made me lol
LOLOLOL!!!!!
I mean... keep in mind I was 5 years old when this came out and I do love the song.... I'm just saying.
Love, love, love this song...always have...I appreciate their talent more now in 2021...
If you are Catholic it is Latin for "Lord Have Mercy" Its recited in part of the Mass.
It's Greek, actually, but you are not wrong. It's used in the Roman Catholic Mass, but it's the only part of the traditional Mass done in Greek.
Yep had to sing many languages in choir. Many were religious in topic so I always thought of that when I heard this song!
The words are Greek in the Latin mass
Its Greek not Latin
Greek
Richard Page sang amazingly well for a long time. Made their music so very special. Great band.
Saw them in concert years (decades....) ago. Great live performance. Love their sound.
Listened to it all the time. It was on a loop over the radio every hour.
I think I was 14 or 15 when this song came out.But I have always loved this song!!! His vocals was on point!!
I loved this song back in the 80's. For me this is "old school" music! I still love this song and many other songs from the 80's era.
I love Mr. Mister. and Richard Page. Those were the days! Best music and times!.
Ty, I was married with a 5 yr old when this song came out. I listened to it on MTV while cleaning house and doing laundry! lol
laura cosby one of my friends was pregnant when this song was popping, and she named her daughter Kyrie. Lol 😂 we lost track shortly after because her husband was military and she moved to Japan! But I heard years later through a friend that she had another daughter and named her Topanga! 😂
I was married with a 3-yr-old. ♡
@@thefloridamimi9278 That is awesome!
It means "Lord have mercy".
The stank face @2:22 says it all 🤣 "Ahaa...got'em!!!!
Check out Mike and the mechanics, same groove from the 80's but harder
I love Mike and the mechanics
love "silent running" and "the living years"
@@ibiwizi123 in the living years I hope he does one day if they let him it makes me cry since I first heard it as boy back in the day
They always reminded me of that heady, emotional 70's rock I was a tad too young for
@@renechavarria2683 I'm watching the video right now. It needs to be brought into the limelight for a new generation to see, hear and understand
The drummer Pat Mastelotto went on to play e.g with David Sylvian and in King Crimson when the tour backing band of Sylvian's including one Robert Fripp turned into a new incarnation of King Crimson. The bassist / singer Richard Page has collaborared with Japanese ambient musician Kitaro. He sang on "Caravan" which originally is an instrumental theme made for documentary "The Silk Road".
This is such a feel good song! I loved dancing to it.
Another great reaction to an awesome Group Ty, 😀😊😀
(If you have not already looked it up, 😀)
"Kyrie Eleison" is Greek for "Lord, have mercy." It is used as a prayer in both Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox services. Greek was the original language of the New Testament and it was later translated in to Latin. ... But that happened three years before writing 'Kyrie,' and had nothing to do with that song.
Same thought process of thinking it was 'carry a laser' as previously commented😀😁😂😁😀
Have a great rest of your week, 😀
I loved it .... I remember it from years ago. And when was reading a book of prayers it clicked it I was revisiting mighty words I had enjoyed once before I was a amazing moment to hear the song once again. Kyrie Elesion .
The mix and harmony of this is off the chain and timeless!
Mister Mister with The Bangles were my first rock concert back in 1988!
Always been a sucker for good harmony, and this is a fav of mine from the 80’s.
This song came out in early 1986 when I was just entering the Navy...Great tune
This song reminds me of my high school years...since I went to catholic schools all my life I knew what Kyrie meant and it was great that a song with such a good message was popular. I love it to this day.
Please react to the Cure 'Just Like Heaven', another favorite of mine. 😊
Saw these guys in concert in the late 80's. They sounded amazing! Great concert
Wow! Thanks for that meaning!❤️
@@freidamartin3281 you are most welcome. 😊♥️
Actually it is LATIN. Greek is "Κύριε δείξε έλεος" or "Kýrie deíxe éleos" But same same, yes, it is indeed, Lord have mercy. Cheers!
And when things got really bad, this song comes out of nowhere and I remember what passion really means and I start to get back on track.
i remember Mr Mister and Mike and the Mechanics from 1989.. both awesome bands!
Love this song...I was a younglin in the 80s...bought it on vinyl for my boyfriend’s birthday last month ❤️
Dude you're in your 40s...you aren't yet an old man..
This song is a classic. One of the best motivational songs ever.
This Song is Now More Relevant Nowadays cause Everyone keeps saying Kyrie Eleison!!!
My favorite song as a kid in the 80s...! Still one of my favorites. Pretty cool i landed upon your reaction video haha...nice idea for a channel.
I have to go see them in concert. One of my all time favorite bands!! LOVE IT!!!
Mister Mister are you kidding 👍👍👍👍
He was asked to sing lead for Chicago and Toto! Two EXCELLENT groups
Such a great vibe. Positive through and through
This been my SHIT since 85! I am so sorry that you just feeling this song. Lord have mercy! I'm a sista too.
Awesome song, Awesome meaning !
This was my favorite songs by this band even though they didn’t stay around long. ❤️❤️ thank you!!!!
Kyrie means "Lord have mercy," it's Greek.
I'd love you to react to Christopher Tin - Baba Yetu, it was the first ever song for a video game to get nominated and win a grammy award.
I will never forget getting to see them perform live on Grad Night at Disneyland, they performed when Videopolis was still there, and it was AMAZING!
Beautiful song loved hearing it again never gets old!
This song reaches down and takes you to a higher level! Eighties music has an optimistic, exuberant, joy-of-life energy to it.
saw them in concert, late 80's they were opening for Heart on the Bad Animals tour. Awesome night.
Now I do.
