The High Commissioner has excellently articulated every minute detail of our relationship and for me the historical linkages between India and Sri Lanka was the highlight.
Who trying to revive Sri lanka ??? Not this Ambassador, only "The Modi " . Still you are in Colonials ' Nonsense ness like Gadhi families in india . He as a Ambassador today understand that legacy , Only due to" The Modi govt "
The issue with SL is labour reforms. I was in SL to evaluate a company. Pvt sector cannot operate there without reforms. They have too many holidays like every full moon is a holiday apart from weekends. No employee can be retrenched, it will be stuck for years in labour court. Kids looking to go abroad as soon as they clear college. Otherwise wonderful people. Another issue for Indians is chinese influence is very visible.
India and Sri Lanka should have more persons like the present ambassador. A wonderful podcast which has clarity and vision. Let us hope the the civilisational relations will grow strong as the days past.
He speaks well, like a politician, chooses his words carefully and very few slips. He avoided Pakistan, because Sri Lanka military has close ties with Pakistan.
Such a wonderful discussion! Hurt on both sides can go away only with integration and people to people contacts as the Ambassador mentioned. And in the entire discussion there was nothing except Good Of both India and Sri Lanka and compassion, kindness and love as a way forward. This is highlighted by Dalai Lama himself. Grateful to you Smita! 🙏
You just have no idea how i look forward to your podcasts. Smita you are so gifted, the way you conduct the interview is truly examplery. So delightful to watch. Believe it or not , some of them I watch again and again Kudos to you!!! Just to let you know that my name is Suloch, but the SIM card is in my Husnand's name Mohan. I am 82 years old, and a very political persnon, since my college days. Smita wish you the very best in your professional and personal live. Bye for now.......
All South Asian countries have a colonial hangover. While India is shaking that off, Sri Lanka has some distance to go. Very few Sri Lankans want to associate with India. Educated Sri Lankans aspire to live in Australia, America or UK. Sri Lankans needs to raise their game so they can bring more people into the middleclass and become more self confident about their own culture. Indian tourist alone could make Sri Lanka solvent. However, hardly any promotion of it in India.
Fabulous insight. Sri Lanka can learn a lot from transformation of Indian economy from a Socialist model to a free market. India faced balance of payment crisis in early 90's and the government of the day was forced to make the inevitable change for the better. The decision taken in the early 90's paid rich dividends in the subsequent decades. Pain is good as long as you know the cure. PM Modi is indeed a visionary who could see a future in tapping the common interests.
Thank you very much for bringing us this episode. We know very little about Sri Lanka, as compared to our other neighbours - Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh. . . . I think if we speak of sharing a wavelength, the best one would be with Sri Lankans, especially the Southern States of India. They too are a multi-ethnic, multi-religion society, living more or less in harmony with each other. Their civic society, like Indians, give prime importance to education, economy, tourism, development, managing finances to revive their economy in practical ways. They are highly educated, intelligent, progressive in their thinking, have strong family & cultural values, are proud of their Indian ancestry and are friends with India, despite the phase when some of their corrupt politicians connived with China for mutual personal gain. It is a country we can trust, to not back stab us, to not act against our interests, our businesses, our country. The gruesome episode with the LTTE, which is still a sore point with most Indians of our generation, must be shut away if we want to move forward. It was Indira Gandhi's crooked policies of supporting the Sri Lankan Government officially and at the same time funding the LTTE through back channels, to keep the violent conflict simmering, which was the cause of Rajiv Gandhi 's assassination. It was reported that Rajiv Gandhi was appalled to hear about his mother's & consequently India's foreign policy on Sri Lanka, when he took over charge as the PM after his mother's assassination.
RB spotted. The ltte was a Christian tertorist organization. The 4 southern states now have christians as cms. Stop pulling the typical whitewash that abrahamics do. Victimhood. Sonia G had sent SSwamy to meet George Habash of the P.L.O to hand over payment to supply arms to the ltte. Its on record. The top rung of the ltte were methodist christians. Do your research before faking it.
Smita, you are too good too! I think issue of Prabhakaran is actually unknown to most Indians. Pakistan, Srilanka and India connection is probably a very good connection. Cricket is another unifying factor. Animosity with Pakistan could probably be diluted using Srilanka example.
It's really interesting talk with srilankan diplomat, am an exporter have been major shipment to srilanka . Am waiting for trade to resume between two countries as everyone knows in INR settlement
Hi, Sri Lankan here. I watched the full discussion without skipping. As a Sri Lankan, I agree with most of the facts that Mr. Moragoda expressed. But, I doubt whether Sri Lankans (mostly Sinhalese) are still ready to have that linkage with India due to past experience (India aiding LTTE, Operation Poomalai, etc). For example, I'd personally like to see a railway bridge connecting India & Sri Lanka. However, if you ask other Sri Lankans randomly, 99% of them will say NO.
Ayubowan, Sri Lankan here. Watched the entire podcast. Very impressed with our Ambassador. Well spoken and intelligent. Sri Lankan’s perception of India has changed for the better over the years. It was not always great especially during the civil war and suspicions of Tamil Nadu. With time, some healing has taken place after the war ended. Long ways to go. This is just my feeling, but I think most Sri Lankans have a positive view now of India. Even as a Sinhalese, our cultural and religious links to India are undeniable and go a long way back in history. However, we are also very unique in our language & culture. Sinhala is only understood in Sri Lanka and we are not as conservative as our neighbours in some aspects of life (like caste, marrying into other ethnic groups, marrying foreigners etc). Having said all that, I would like to see us more connected and the railway link is a good idea. It will take some time to sell this idea to public. India-Sri Lanka relations are quite good now and quite few support India in cricket 😊
We really need to focus and learn from mistakes around us. It takes decades to build a strong economy and only a few years to loose it. We need to keep our heads down and keep working towards long term goals.
In srilanka still hindu temples are been attacked no actions as been taken. When tamil nadu state fishermsn goes for fishing still they navy of srilanka arrest them.
Sorry to say so: Since the civil war in Srilanka they were playing smarter with India...As Milinda agreed, during the cold war they looked to get into America's good book that wasn't digested well in India & Russia. In the recent times when India have problem with China they tried playing all weather friend with them; intentionally with the aim of antoganizing Indian foreign relations. These foolish move by the Lankans broke that country all together
Dear milind sir Please tell your government to rapidly develop the ramayana corridor, Chola corridor, buddhist corridor, agricultural corridor your country and connect with India. Connect with state governments which you named in your discussion that they have connections ...make visa free/ at least once must visit trend to your country...feel them secure. Then only we can see people to people contact will increase. Still your genius cricketers are legend to us...make them face of these type of trends.. I feel even brilliant minds are there also in Sri Lanka..who can and are fixing issues between us..
We should have rail and road links to Srilanka to improve tourism. Srilanka is wonderful country and Indian's would like to go for religious tourism. Rail and Road links will give real boost to Srilankan economy.
The issue about it is the national & public security of not only India and Sri Lanka but also other SAARC countries, as it may help terrorists, drug dealers, weapon dealers and all other serious criminals from these countries to work closer.
No country citizens ever had such an experience of enjoying (not really anyway but out of frustration) the president's palace in rhe the contemporary democratic world. Good luck to to Srilankans and request them to participate in development of their country on the same way the protests, and show the same courage when it comes to any illegalatiy and immoral activity. Personally I respect the protests that is going to change the Srilanka forever in good means.
Unless Srilanka politicians keep of control over business.... srilanka will not have FDI , except the Chinese money.... which eventually will corrode the Srilanka government and the society

Hi Smitha and Naveen as always the Sinhala politicians dodge good questions; they have not resolved an ethnic issue over 75 years just imagine putting the economy back together 🙄
What a great interview. I really enjoyed the economic component of the discussion, especially how HDI was successfully improved but public sector bloat occurred. We have a similar issue in India because we still have License Raj in manufacturing.
