I totally agree with what you said about Yoko. But remember that Sean was in charge of this release. He made his Mom a big part of the album even though she wasn't.
Thanks for your honest review on this set Matt! I do love this album and am glad it’s getting the deluxe treatment. I have enjoyed the reviews from people that received advanced copies and am very happy for them. However I completely agree that there seems to be some revisionism happening with this release. I know John and Yoko were together during the recording and she inspired the music but it does appear they are treating this like Double Fantasy when it wasn’t. I will be curious to see how Walls and Bridges and Rock n Roll get handled as Yoko was not in John’s life during those sessions. We saw a glimpse of this in 2005 when they released the remixed version of Walls and Bridges where they changed the Album cover for the CD and the CD label has the pictures of John and Yoko’s faces morphing into each other. I am not a Yoko basher but I do like history to be told accurately and not with an agenda. Thanks again for your videos Matt!
Well, you certainly are entitled to your own opinion, so kudos to you. Now I'm headed over to Beatley Tones channel. He has an unboxing video on the $1350 Mind Games Cube! Started watching it the other day but had to go do some other stuff. Take care. Get well soon!
After finding out that certain instruments (That John wanted on the original album) were removed, I think I'll stick with my original released version. I'm happy for all the people that enjoy this latest version though.
Ordered my John Lennon Deluxe Box set from Beatlefest, should have it by July 15th ! Looking forward to it! Mind Games that! PS I hope some day, we will see a John Lennon 7in Singles box set! That would be cool 😎- Peace and Love!
I appreciate your honest, candid assessment of the album, the sound, packaging, extras, etc. I love the album and was looking forward to, first and foremost, the new remix. IMHO, Sean and Paul Hicks did a wonderful job on the remix. Beautiful. Although I am a huge John Lennon fan, based on what I would be listening to the most, I simply went with the double cd. I am never much for extra "toys" and paraphernalia in boxes either. I love the music and the books are always done well. However, I am extremely happy with the double cd of "Mind Games". And even though it is just the double set, the packaging is superb. Good job on the review, Matt. One of the best and definitely most candid. (And THANKS for not DRAGGING it out!) 👌
Always great to hear an honest review. Not saying that the other reviews aren't honest, but since I know you better and I understand where you're coming from, I can relate to your opinions more. So much respect to every review out there!
Matt, I really appreciate this review and how you just shoot from the hip and give a very honest take. I have to say it’s somewhat refreshing as I actually consume music in much the same way as you but am constantly caught up in wanting every box set which inevitably ends up sitting on shelf forever after. I’ll go for the deluxe as like you, I’m a sucker for packaging and love having all the Lennon sets line up in uniform. Great review and thanks.
What a great honest review I ordered the box set not bothered about the blue ray discs just the 6 cd and book for me thanks for a honest review instead of glossing the box set up iiiiii
Matt I just wanna say you’re about as nice a bloke as there is in the Beatles community.. Keep loving the Beatles and keep being honest with these estates buddy 👍
I'm probably a bigger fan of Mind Games than you. It's my second favorite Lennon album after POB. I haven't taken the plunge for the box yet. I think the book is the biggest selling point for me. Those elements mixes don't really lend themselves to repeated listens. I Know I Know is a terrific mid tempo pop rock tune. There's no way I would ever buy a deluxe box of Sometime in NYC. That's a turd of an album to me. Makes Extra Texture seem like Sgt Pepper by comparison. I appreciate that the estate hasn't bought and paid for your review.
By your logic, if he'd gotten this box for free, the review then wouldn't have been honest? I got a freebie and my review was dead honest, warts and all.
This is a great review. I really love the sound of the album. I love the elements mix too. Its very peaceful. I agree with what you said about the George Harrison set. The All Things Must Pass uber box is awesome. I believe the Mind Games sets are just too expensive. Thats my opinion. I think I will continue to stream this awesome album. Thanks again for such an honest review.
Good Video Matt! I bought the Mind Games box set. Not bad I played two cds so far of the outtakes. Nice book! But I think John was split from Yoko when this album was released. But anyway this was a nice release. Have a wonderful day Matt!
You'll probably get the cube in the post by the end of the week from the Lennon estate just to annoy you 😊 But I do think the cube is over the top. A collection of all Lennon's albums in a cube like that would've been acceptable though.
Hi Matt, I got the deluxe box set, (not the Super Uber box), I like it. I like some CD’s more than others. That’s all I have to say about it.😅 take care
I'm gonna be honest with you Matt, Mind Games isn't John's best album, it's not one of the best Beatles solo and it's not one of the best albums of '73 but I like it. And I'm gonna best honest Matt, I think the extras are great, and I'm probably gonna listen to them a lot, in fact Iike this format and wish the Beatles box sets were presented this way with the Evolution mixes and Elemental Mixes, the raw mixes are almost as good as the album! Thanks though for your views, we can't all agree on everything.
I love Mind Games. I like the original mix. I don’t like some of the mixing choices such as taking the guitars off of “Tight As” and removing the sax solos.
Very happy to see you again and hope your recovery is going well!! That deluxe cube set is a total waste of money for an average album, with all due respect to the Great John Lennon!!!
Hey, Matt! Nice to see to someone else had the same reaction to the contents of the cube as I did. A recreation of one of Yoko's art exhibits? Puzzles by Sean? Why not put those on a separate release that doesn't say "John Lennon" on it? I respect the delicate way you handled this issue. You're not a Yoko basher and neither am I. I know there is plenty of material in both the regular deluxe and the super deluxe packages that focuses on John. But JL's personal and artistic input is missing from theses sets and I can't help but feel that the estate wandered too far afield from what he would have wanted. And I'll echo you by saying this is just one man's opinion. I am genuinely happy for anyone who orders the cube and enjoys it. Nowadays I enjoy the "Mind Games" album quite a bit. But I'll admit it was a grower for me. It took a few years before I could stop making the obvious comparisons between Games and the best of John's Beatles work and just enjoy it on its own merits. I rate "Aisumasen (I'm Sorry)" and "Out The Blue" as two of John's best compositions. Overall, I rank this album right in the middle of John's solo output. Finally, I think in a few instances Sean regrettably went beyond questionable remix decisions and flat-out deleted portions of his father's recordings. The sax solo at the end of "One Day At A Time" is not mixed down - it's gone! And the reverb bit at the end of "Aisumasen" is also missing. We hear just the first split-second of it and then we go straight into the next song on the album. Boo hiss! I can't see any decent justification for these decisions. Maybe we need to start a petition to get Sean - and Giles - to put a halt to these extreme edits of John Lennon's songs. I don't want to hear a sheep bleating right before "Scared" on the remix of "Walls And Bridges" next year!
Great post Alan! And you bring up excellent points! I totally understand being upset about the changes made. I’m not too much of an audiophile, so I’m not too bothered by it. 🍻😊😎👍🙏❤️
I got the deluxe box and so far i love it. I bought the ultra violet flashlight for the book. I agree with you that Yoko and Sean are trying to rewrite history with the boxset. Mind Games and Walls and bridges are my faves because they're lost weekend May Pang albums. Mind Games is in my top 3 John albums.
I still have to wait for my 2 CD set on Monday...would never get anything larger...I glad other have it and will live vicariously through them. take care
Matt I agree with you? That on some of the ultimate releases? They did over do it on?. Like I told you before Yoko being the mountain was weird . Mentioning Walls and bridges? John was estranged from Yoko on that album. Do I have anything against Yoko? Not really? But I think John put her up on a pedestal because the media put her down constantly. Saying that she was too ugly for Johñ was and is out of line. I always believe people love who they love.
Hello, Met ✌️ It seems like someone has upset you, what's going on? When you say that the album Mind Games is just a small pop album, I can hear it in your voice and see it in your eyes that someone has upset you. Enjoy, my dear, the wonderful times we are experiencing and sharing with our Beatles ♥️ Peace & Love 👍
Most of these remixes sound great. But as far as I’m concerned, Tight a$, Freda Peeple and Meat City are destroyed by absolutely terrible remixes. And removing instruments like Sean did on the Gimme Some Truth collection, is sacrilege. I agree with what you said about the Yoko history rewrite, but she has a long track record of doing that. I thought things would get better as she backed out and Sean took over, but I see no hope of that.

Hi Matt, I am wondering if you already discovered a problem on CD1: the disc says there are 90(!) tracks on it instead of only 12. From track 13 to 90 every 'track' is 24 seconds of silence! Very strange, isn't it?
Hey Matt, I actually think that the Mind Games cube is a waaaaayyy better value that the All Things Must Pass uber box. Having said that, neither one interests me in the least. Take care...
The You Are Here elements mix has me feeling I’m on a Hawaiian beach. Thanks for the video review. It’s the first time I’ve listened to this album. I enjoyed it. Now picking through the other CDs. Streaming it on Apple Music.
I think I might just be able to live and somehow manage without a Nutopia id card in my life , is there any interesting or funny studio banter on this realese ?
Matt, glad you are feeling better enough to do a video on the Mind Games new release. I liked your Breaking! Just received my John Lennon “Mind Games” Ultimate Cube from Lennon estate! That's the best! The toilet seat! The self-portraits! And I appreciate your review here. I agree with your assessment. I have enjoyed the fan club only versions of all the Lennon recordings for quite a while. I haven't even taken the shrink wrap off the official box set I received yesterday. I don't know whether to keep it or send it back. Anyway, take care and enjoy what you enjoy!
Really great review of a nice looking set. I'm sticking with my old OG pressing, though I am sure this would be cool to have. I find a lot of demos and alt mixes in deluxe sets are really not that interesting. Great video!
Matt, I too have some fan club stuff. The one item I have from this album has around 95 songs various takes from the sessions..and I like how those are presented such as a demo, an AT, also a rough mix and some other stuff. But how each song started till it was finished. Sure you might listen to the song a few times but it's better that way. I do think those various takes and demos from "fan club" are what the fans want. I do think it's tedious to have the same track listings on 6 cds from different versions. I think its kind of interesting that we love to listen to various takes that the beatles did during their career then solo careers.. My advice Matt is when another deluxe edition comes out is to make your own version and just buy the remastered album and if you want to listen to the new deluxe edition is Spotify it.
Great video! No amount of special super deluxe treatment can make this album better unfortunately. I absolutely loved the raw mixes for Imagine, hearing the songs without the slap delay on the vocals almost made the songs even more beautiful, on “Mind Games” the raw mixes show tbd flaws of the album even more.
as ever Matt, a decent "feet on the ground" review, is it just me that when i binge myself on these type of sets, i end up slowly hating the songs !, theres the original version, then the countless alternate takes, then the experimental mix, i actually start losing track of the ones ive heard and the ones i havent, the one that sounds like a Chuck Berry song (ONLY PEOPLE)" if i hear that one more time i will scream.....has anyone counted how many times Lennon says "PEOPLE" on this set ?....and listening to OUT OF THE BLUE countless times makes me want to put Sexy Sadie on, and I KNOW makes we want to listen to Ive Got A Feeling !
Thanks for an honest appraisal, Matt: always appreciate your reviews. I've never been a fan of this album, so I won't be getting anything. The 2002 cd mix will suffice for me.
Matt glad you didn't spend all that dough on the crazy expensive cube. Why? This is a subpar album, certainly not JL best ... and any crazy packaging cannot change that fact. PS. Love your take at the end and agree with every word of it.
@@MeanMrMayo I understand. I’m sure some people can think Beatles for Sale is the best Beatle album. Not sure it is … or Mind Games being an all time classic.
I opted for the 2 vinyl set, that being said I 100% agree with you that Sean and company made this a little more John and Yoko album. Believe me, if there's a double fantasy remix I ain't buying it.
MATT, I'm glad to see you resisted the urge, the overwhelming temptation to purchase the ultimate super deluxe amazing wunderbar over the top edition for just under the low, low, low, low price of an arm, a leg, a major organ and a second mortgage on your house. Still, I appreciate your honesty on this edition Matt. I think I'm gonna take it and just get the two cd set. That is all my sorry ass can afford. I'm hoping it comes down in price a bit. Right now it's $30 on Amazon. Would like to get if for $20 or less. Was never a big fan of this album. Bring on the Lucie and Meat City are my favorite songs. Never got into that Nutopia crap. I've also never been one for all of the extra doo dads in these archival boxed sets. A bit too gimmicky. To me, it's about the music. Don't mind a few extra out takes. But 6 cd's worth???? Sorry, but at my age I only have so many outtakes left in me before I'm done. However, I would love to see just a large poster of the Mind Games image of Lennon on the white background with Yoko as the top of his head. Wouldn't mind that. Always thought that was cool image. But, all of the other stuff Mean Mr Mayo showed on his video that came with the artsy boxed set. What is anybody gonna do with all of that crap? A bit pretentious to me. Again, thanks for the review.
Have you really heard this new version? The sound is awful. I was listening to it and though it was good until I popped in the MFSL version. I was amazed at how much better the MFSL version was. Do they listen to these things before they are released? Do they make comparisons? The objective is that as technology gets more advanced, the sound quality should also improve. I'm thinking of returning it back to Amazon. If I decide to keep it, it would be for the bonus material, which is really not that great. And the price... did I mention price? Totally not worth the bucks.
The Uber mind games set also has very little in it for the price. Aside from a nice hard cover book. All the extra Cardboard, plastic, and a white flag are worthless.
i brought the 2cd set yesterday the album sounds very hollow to me now ive played a thew tracks cant ever see me playing it again even the out takes sound like they have ben remixed ill stick to my 2010 remaster another on the boxset those elemental mixes i hate them had john done them inself fair enough put they were put together by his son who wasnt even born when the album came out sad part about it walls bridges will be next a very dissapoint
Lets talk value for the money..At a 170.00 for a set that you wont listen to half the music it isnt worth it. The uber set not even close when it comes to value. The stuff that comes with it didnt impress me much so ok its being called an art piece well last time i checked im not an art collector. Hell i didnt even pre order anything and I'm glad i didnt since the 6 cd set is now already down to 106 bucks. FOMO not on my end..
Excellent review and I agree the deluxe box set is just for the major fans of Lennon's music, and the 2 disc would suffice for the casual listener. I do LOVE the album now but it's probably ranked about 4th or 5th in my overall rankings. Hopefully Sometime In New York City is next to be remixed!
I totally agree with what you said about Yoko. But remember that Sean was in charge of this release. He made his Mom a big part of the album even though she wasn't.

The You Are Here elements mix has me feeling I’m on a Hawaiian beach. Thanks for the video review. It’s the first time I’ve listened to this album. I enjoyed it. Now picking through the other CDs. Streaming it on Apple Music.
I got the 2 cd set today 35 dollars
I think I might just be able to live and somehow manage without a Nutopia id card in my life , is there any interesting or funny studio banter on this realese ?
Sounds. Cool
Thanks Brian! 🇺🇸🙏😊👍😎🍻
Great video bro
Appreciate it Josh! 😊🙏👍😎🍻🇺🇸
Stick with greatest hits
There's no "fact" about the quality of the album... it's all opinion. I know some people who feel this is their favorite Lennon album.
I love ❤️ the mind games song
The Uber mind games set also has very little in it for the price. Aside from a nice hard cover book. All the extra Cardboard, plastic, and a white flag are worthless.
Revisionism is rarely welcome or pretty…
i brought the 2cd set yesterday the album sounds very hollow to me now ive played a thew tracks cant ever see me playing it again even the out takes sound like they have ben remixed ill stick to my 2010 remaster another on the boxset those elemental mixes i hate them had john done them inself fair enough put they were put together by his son who wasnt even born when the album came out sad part about it walls bridges will be next a very dissapoint
But Tom your rooms are full of any and all types of Beatles related art pieces!
@@MeanMrMayo lol btw the fest next year is March 28,29,30th 2025.
Thanks Larry! 🙏👍😎🍻
