Hi again Mike,
We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she's from another planet or perhaps an angel come down from Heaven. We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. It is as close to supernatural as we are ever likely to hear! She does all the musical arrangements herself, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of "You Raise Me Up" before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV, which you just analyzed! She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 42 on April 5, though in Korean culture she would be 43 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 35 when she sang this version of "Arirang Alone." ua-cam.com/video/zFyndK9VOCk/v-deo.html
She decided to enter a televised singing contest called "King of the Masked Singers" in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on UA-cam. Apparently Oprah Winfrey saw her on UA-cam and showed her to David Foster, who then contacted her and went to Japan in order to work with her. She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 "There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death." So she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang says that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she has never gone above the 6th octave in performances. You're right, she's kinda textbook of perfect vocal skills. BUT, lots of singer/vocalist out there with those capabilities.
What makes her different is.. The pure soul.
If you just hear her singing (or luckily watching her live) performances without any contents purposes, you'd forgot about all the techniques, skills, theory, etc. Start with faster heartbeat, chills, goosebumps, and ended up with tears, and it happens everytime, no matter which performance you watch and how many time you re-watched them. She can be that pure just because she sings just for God and for you, not for money or fame.
Yes her performances are completely singing lesson, but I would say that as a journey. Just look at her expression, gestures, stage presents, interactions, vocal techniques, everything.
She takes you to church. Thats experience.

What an amazing explanation in this video! First of all, you clearly enjoy what you hear as you offer your observations. This masterful display of vocal proficiency shows a Sohyang who uses music as an instrument for personal expression. You made so many excellent comments that resonated with me:
1. The use of riffs and runs should be applied for emotional expression, rather than demonstration of ability.
2. This is the second time I hear your comments on finding the right type of vibrato. Finally sinking in.
3. You have the most insightful remark on the vowel management I've seen. Your comment on the handling of the verse "...restless heart beating so imperfectly" is much appreciated. I have wondered about Sohyang's choice in dealing with the transition from O to I in this rendition. You gave me additional knowledge on its treatment.

Just wanted to let you know that people like me acknowledge and recognize the extra steps you have to take in reediting and reuploading multiple times. It's because UA-cam algorithm and policy are strict nowadays, unfortunately. Don't worry about having a long video either, especially if it's full of substance like yours. Many are actually seeking detailed breakdown and analysis out of curiosity and fascination brought by the mastery of vocals. I am really looking forward to hearing your insight of her "Bridge Over Troubled Water" ... I knew her first time from that song and it did change my life forever. I (with my vocal level of secret bathroom vocalist) would like to improve myself and to be able to deliver some decent singing of that song sometimes.
Appreciated your extensive explanation truly, since I have no background in voice / vocal performance at all (I have got some training and academic researching in the field of phonetics + applied linguistics in the past .. that's how I could improve myself when singing in English) --- the accurate and comprehensible explanation gives me clear instruction of how I can practice myself.
5th octave is like a piece of cake for her. Ya considering she is a Soprano with proper vocal training in contemporary music.

Sohyang is wonderful. Have you heard of David Phelps? Many people consider him to be her male counterpart.
He would be excellent for teaching vocal dynamics as he is very good, nearly flawless. He lives what he is singing, like Sohyang.
He sings many genres. He has beautiful passagio, glissando and transposition (if that’s the right word for changing keys while singing).
He blends pop and classical styles very well.
I recommend listening to “The Singer.” It opens with an acapella version of “0 come Immanuel” arranged by David. Then moves into “ The Singer”, a song David wrote about God creating and redeeming the world through song.

Her performance is always great and thank you for your explanation. There is one thing I'd like to point out about your analysis, you put too much emphasis on 'high notes' and how high she can reach. From audience's point of view, high note is quite important but the overall performance, especially communication and her ability of delivering message is more important.

I like listening to your analysis. It helps me appreciate and enjoy performances. You should check out her lean on me. Very different vibe - upbeat and gospel - but still a technical showcase.
