This arrangement is a masterpiece (hers with her team), the vocals are stunning, especially if you take into account the fact that she was actually recovering from pneumonia during this performance and was advised by the doctors not to sing. Sohyang is phenomenal.
It's a blessing to be able to hear her songs. For me she is an exception. Because she is incomparable to anyone else.
Sohyang is awesome like you said, but Anna Vaskelainen is a national treasure, don't deny that.
From what I understand from her fans, she just out of hospital same day to perform. She does not want to disappoint her fans that is why she continued to perform that day.
On one of her later interviews she mentioned that she did this performance with the impression it was going to be her last. She ignored doctor's orders while reviving from pnemonia and left the hospital to do this performance because "people were waiting". She never revived her voice to the previous condition and had to stop for 2 years until the writer of this song contacted her to congratulate her on her arrangement. She found the courage to return to singing and said "I was feeling like an expensive racing car on my previous condition, but now I feel like a bus, I can run slower but I can accomodate many more people with my singing".

@@haroldk724 I think it was on her 20yo when when she was getting lords messages to get married and discovered her ovarian cancer on the premarrital check. On this song she claimed that her carrier wings were chipped off and she had to reevaluate her life after the loss of her extreme vocal abilities. But she said on her interview, while I was a speeding race car, I now consider myself as a bus, I run slower but I can accomodate more people.

You absolutely correct in your theory that she was not 100% during this performance. She was dealing with pneumonia at this time. And you are THE ONLY vocal coach to actually pick up on that. (amazing, considering you had only done one prior reaction to her). I am not a vocal coach or even a singer, I am a musician however, and I appreciate her skill, taste and musicianship (These arrangements of hers are epic). Thanks to your analysis of her vocals, I have a much better understanding and an even greater respect for what Sohyang does. Thank you for your thoughts and analogies. Sohyang was recovering from pneumonia here. She was not well at all and she disappeared for some months after this to try and get healthy.
Mixed belts that left me with mixed emotions that turned into tears and tears and more tears ! This woman is such a beautiful singer and I loved this performance ! Thank you for your great reaction to the amazing and incomparable Sohyang. And, yes, she was told not to sing that night because she was recovering from pneumonia but did not want to disappoint anyone. So she might not have been at her very best, yet she was not too shabby, was she?

Once I saw a fan video on the web on the topic "How So Hyang sings when she is sick." And all the comments were just that most of today's performers can't sing in their best condition the way she sings when she's sick. And her level of performance in an ideal state of health is practically unattainable.

Sohyang changed one of the stanzas into a sort of bridge - the stanza that begins with the phrase "There's no life without its hunger". I think it adds interesting variation to the song while allowing her voice to shine more.
Excellent analysis in that you perceived a non optimal health in this performance! As many will reveal she was just released from hospital pneumonia treatment and medically counseled not to sing . She felt deeply obligated to her fans and the guest artist from Westlife in attendance is my understanding. Arirang Alone is another masterpiece as well as the stripped down busking performances with other artists on Begin Again Korea. Hug Me where she is in pink is another performance where she was still weak recovering from pneumonia again so she is seated.

I love watching vocal coaches and voice teachers reacting to great singers because it helps know why I love to listen to them so much. I know I like it but the comments from people in that particular field help me understand WHY I love it. Thank you. Your reaction was superb. I seen several for this performance and you are the only one to detect and mention that something seemed off. Since she was sick with pneumonia and left her sickbed to come and perform, something certainly was off. You display your knowledge and skill by detecting it. Bravo to you. She wasn’t 100% well in this performance, she was advised not to sing by the doctor because she hadn’t yet recovered from her latest bout of pneumonia, but she didn’t want to disappoint the people who had come to see her.
I am a Sohyang fan of many years & IMO this isn’t on my top 10 performances of hers, although still amazing by your average good singers standards, ‘Arirang Alone’ though is right up there near the top, so you must watch it, it’s EPIC!!

She was in the hospital with pneumonia on the day she sang the song. She was given antibiotics and painkillers at the hospital before singing. It's more amazing that she's not 100% in condition.

uterine cancer, hepatitis, chronic pneumonia, etc.. The night she sung You Raise Me Up
She just got out of Hospital the night before and was advised Not to sing...So she did this....lol
but did spend next 10 days in Hospital ...Even She Admitted...was the end of Her Singing again !!!
It's really a miracle this one of the most skilled vocalist of all time could be
in such poor condition. And definitely she is much more than great technician
and has Perfect Control of Her Gift...and Her singing is so special.

As others have commented, she was ill during this performance. You can see it in her face and hear it in few choices she makes. You should react to what I consider her masterworks: Arirang Alone and Everyone. Arirang is a folk anthem that Sohyang from which Sohyang creates an allegory of the experience of the Korean people. Everyone is a declaration of her faith. Both are moving and brilliantly performed. She also has a number of more recent videos from the TV show Begin Again Korea. They are simple arrangements performed in parks and on sidewalks during COVID. The setting makes them special, especially as you watch the young performers in the show's cast become fans of Sohyang. I Will Always Love You, Misty, Please, and Love Poem are favorites.

She is missing the healthy parts you mentioned as she was terribly stricken with pneumonia back then, and of course, in that performance, that day! She slayed nonetheless.
You should see her recent performances as she SLAYS for sure with POWER!!! She even sang "Upon This Rock" after 7 years omg! 😁💖

You are the first to hear something missing. She had full on pneumonia during this performance. She was told by a DR that day, not to speak at all, but even with weak lungs and a bad throat, she was still able to do what she did. Yea she had to pull back because she was very ill here. Nobody else would have dared to perform in her condition, but she does not like to let her fans down and Shane Filan, from the UK was there to hear her sing a song g he performs all the time.
It's funny to watch this and know this one actually lacks magic when it comes to hers lol. If you want an arrangement shocker try Lean on Me. The good thing about it would be you'd get to see her really mix high too...Bb5s. But for me man it's all the others she does with just wild head voice phrases. But yeah higher mixes need seen too and that's Lean on Me and Mona Lisa especially. There's just a lot and you have a big gap of surprises to see. Thanks for the Sohyang reaction!
Please consider if going by votes how many are probably fairly casual and just know because of more known songs. Might be hard to ever get voted into some of the epic things. I mean if this edged out Arirang Alone that to me is telling enough. Fwiw. Not even sure I'd do it next now as it won't be as revealing to other potentials of her now. Seems some do certain ones and stop, figuring they will all have that kind of pattern. There's just an actual ton of amazing variety from her.

Anna, you very rightly pointed out that So Hyang's voice was not in the best condition on the day of the performance. Shortly before that, she had been ill with pneumonia and had not fully recovered. The doctor forbade her even to speak, but she still went on stage to sing. By the way, I try to follow her work, and over the past 4 years I have not come across a single video with this particular version of the song. The usual version of So Hyang sings quite often, but this particular arrangement was made specifically for this performance, it is very laborious for the singer and expensive (you need an orchestra and a choir), and in my opinion it was not repeated anymore.
Sohyang actually did this same version two more times in the following months of 2018. There are cell phone recordings of it on UA-cam. But she did not get over her bouts of pneumonia until 2020. Then in July 2022 she came down with Covid19 but shook it off completely in two weeks. I think God helps her out of her lung problems. 😇

Excellent reaction as always. Now that "You Raise Me Up" is on table, I suggest you check out something from Tommy Johansson (Sabatons guitarist, Majesticas vocalist). He has done cover of this song (1 octave challenge) and many more outstanding ones including Alone and disneyfied Sabaton songs.

I have kind of a challenge for you. In Japan, there's a popular group called Wagakki Band. They're a band that combines rock music with Japanese traditional instruments and singing. They have one song that, for me, is their outlier in that it doesn't sound like their usual rock and ballad-ish stuff. It's a jazzy song called "Synchronicity" and features a back and forth between the guitarist, Machiya, and the vocalist/keyboardist, Yuko. Yuko is one of my favorite singers period, and I'd love to see a reaction to it in your style. I'm providing a link because this is my favorite version of the song so far, and there are a lot of other live versions out there.

Your point about her being not in to form was right on point. I'm sure her mind was a lot more on her technique abs trying to stay open as much as possible hence the reliance on the wide open jaw a lot, avoiding closed sounds abs the usual grit she puts on her vocals for emphasis.

Sohyang is a talented singer with an angelic voice who is loved not only in Korea but also in many other countries. Of course, there are many popular singers in Korea, but there are also singers called Forrestella, a popera four-member vocal group that is well known in reaction videos these days. Actually, she was gravely ill due to recurring pneumonia she was suffering from at the time.
She thought this very well could be her last public performance, so she decided to give it a go despite her doctor's advice not to.
You may have noticed her vocal tone was different than usual and she was grimacing toward the end.
Anyway, some divine force was with her that night to lift her up and carry her on.
Sometimes I wish Sohyang had less great stuff, because this one is "just ok" in the land of Sohyang. Then reactors often don't even make it to a lot of the best. She has so many you should treat yourself (not even react) to say "Home" from masked singer, to get a view into some of the variety. Maybe even also Day Day from masked singer lol. She rap sings that one. It's epic, but again so many others you'd never get to these anyway for reacting.
I'd definitely just enjoy those. Breathe and Mona Lisa still from masked singer are better yet and worth saving for reactions. Fate from I am singer is too. I have nothing and Lean on Me are absolute monster performances. Misty from begin again korea is so beautiful it's messed up. And Arirang Alone from immortals songs 2 is probably the best first reaction.
Everyone will say do "Everyone" performance but I don't know for me it's just too much belty. And she's about all I watch reactions to now. Power of love and amazing grace get recommended some but I don't get that when that aren't showcasing her ability at all really.

Just wanted to suggest Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt.” It’s a Tear jerker and I doubt you’d be able to find something so unique and emotional since it is from a 70 year old. Dear Anna: As Marisa Gettas said, Sohyang was not yet fully recovered from pneumonia and yet she was able to gift her audience a marvelous performance.
