    I was ready to order new ice maker and dispensing motor, then I found this video.
    I thought, no way would Whirlpool let this design get sold.
    Well I had 6 out of 9 wires cut!!
    Got them all soldered and spliced a few hours ago and I just now heard it dump ice and the dispensing motor runs!!
    Thanks for making this video!!

      That’s awesome, glad it helped, yaaaa no way they’d design it to intentionally fail right after the warranty period right?!?! Thanks for watching!

    I just looked at my Whirlpool model WRS576FIDM00 and my door wire loom looks similar to yours. The sheathing is broken and I’ll bet some of the wires are damaged. My symptom was the ice maker would randomly just stop making ice. Then a week or two later it would start working again for weeks. It’s been intermittently making ice like this for two years. So frustrating! Thank you so much!!!

    • @Azkeyguy
      @Azkeyguy  4 роки тому +1

      Matthew Pyle for sure, pretty sure they design them to do that so people will upgrade!! Hopefully you get it fixed up, the wire on this one are at the bottom left hinge and they don’t give you any extra wire or much room to play with!!

    Just finished the fix. Had the same thing. White wire cut. I had to have the whole door replaced last time as per the repairman. Fortunately it was still under warranty. New door, not even 2 years old and another cut wire. The sound of the ice dumping was glorious!! Thanks a ton for this video. Fixed it in about 15 minutes and less than $10. Life saver. Add me to the class action. This is horrible design.

    All of my wires were broken except one. I fixed them all back with those little solder connectors working now. Had the same issue here and reattached the wires and good to go. Had a Sears technician come out and he knew right away what it was. Wish we had seen this video sooner. $120 diagnosis that took 5mins. They don't sell a harness separately either. You have to replace the entire door at a cost of $1,200 according to the tech. Glad we were able to fix it ourselves and save that money, but frustrated may they may sever again.

    I just replaced the ice maker in my in-laws freezer a few months back. It was messed up (tray twisted), so it needed to be replaced. It made a few cubes, but has since stopped. I was thinking it might be the water inlet valve, it was trying to make sure before spending $100 (over $200 for secondary, too) to fix it. I was just looking at those wires at the bottom of the door, but haven’t taken anything off to inspect it because I was thinking water line. I’ll take it off later and check it, especially since it seems so many others have had that issue. Plus, everything else seems fine (water dispenser, temperature, etc).

    I had the exact same problem. My ice maker stopped working, but the freezer door control panel, ice motor, and water dispenser were still functional. After finding this video, I checked the wire harness and all wires except for grey/orange and white were broken. I was able to remove the door and solder new wires in and shrink wrapped everything. Finally have ice again! No thanks to whirlpool who wanted to sell me a new $1000 freezer door (that's their solution to this problem). Honestly there should be a recall or class action lawsuit brought up against whirlpool. This is a horrible design flaw.

      It’s crazy every wire?!?! I know and they act like they have no idea what the problem is, imagine how many people get a different fridge and throw these away just because of some wiring! Just a question, when you took the door off were you able to take the white plastic inside of the door off completely to do your wiring? It’s crazy the control panel still worked, mine did too even with all the wires that were cut, they definitely need to do something about it

  • @szargos
    @szargos Рік тому +1

    So Whirlpool is not fixing this design. However, for some reason, I am looking at purchasing a fridge that has this flaw (It's on sale, and the reviews seem good besides this issue). It sucks that I'm even considering purchasing but it is what it is.
    This repair seems easy enough, however, is there something that you can recommend to do when purchasing this new that would prevent this? It seems there is enough slack already, but maybe not. Or is removing that black clip all that can be done? Or rubber taping the wires, etc.?

    • @Azkeyguy
      @Azkeyguy  Рік тому +2

      On this particular model I think the main issue, which was just made worse with that little clip, was that there was too much of a bend on the wires, they litteraly kink when the door is in the closed position, and after time with opening and closing it breaks the wires. Recently we upgraded too because of the wiring issue being fixed so many times we were running of wire to fix without taking the the white interior plastic out of the metal door and replacing the loom, but eventually we knew it would happen again. We went with a GE brand, and all French door fridge freezers will have the same issue I'm afraid, but the GE hinge area seemed to be designed to where it wasn't going to put as much stress on the wires. As far as the one in the video, I did everything possible to provide enough slack, even adding the extra length of wire during the second fix, but even with that it still failed a 3rd time, and then a 4th. There really wasn't any way I could rig it up to where the bend wouldn't be an issue. I know my answer's kind of all over the place but in short, no, there wasn't much I was able to do besides removing the clip, however if that clip is removed right away, I think it would prolong the inevitable, giving you some extra time before the stress gets to it, but I have found its a common issue on these. Ya never know woth it being close to black Friday and Xmas, maybe there may be others on sale too, but if its the right price then at least you'll know the fix! Best of luck, thanks for watching!!

    I replaced the ice maker and dual water valve. It still did not work. My brother said he has the same fridge as I have and his had broken wires at the bottom of the freezer door. I checked mine and it had 3 broken wires. I cut the other 3 wires and extended all 6 wires by 6" each. The ice maker works now. The wiring harness is in the middle of a moving door so this is bound to happen eventually. The easiest fix would be to make this section of wiring a pigtail that connects to both the present connection under the fridge and to the bottom of the freezer door. That way when the wiring wears out it can be disconnected at both ends and a replacement installed within minutes. But this makes sense so they will never do it.

      @@Azkeyguy I have a Whirlpool Gold model # gsf26c4exs03. I purchased it new in 2012. I soldiered in 6" of wire and heatshrinked the soldiers and new wiring into one cable. That made it rigid. I pushed the soldiered wire cable up the freezer door as much as it would allow so the new splices would not move or stress with the door movement. The splices on the other end are pushed under the fridge and not stressed at all. Now as the door is opened and closed the cable slides back and forth through the hole. The door movement is felt in the new wiring but the wiring is long enough that the wiring is not pinched or twisted as the door moves. It should not break again. I know this is wordy. I hope you understand how I did it.

    • @Azkeyguy
      @Azkeyguy  3 роки тому +1

      Yea I understood it all, I actually tried to do that and did put in an extra six or so inches into the wire loom, but it seemed like I had a hard time getting the wiring to go back up into the hole in the fridge hinge to be able to make it work, might have to take a look again this weekend, but it might have been that my splices were so close to the hole and the butt connectors didn’t wanna go in, but maybe I could get them in one at a time, I appreciate your comment back and will let you know how it goes!

    • @Azkeyguy
      @Azkeyguy  4 роки тому +1

      You might want to try and unplug for a few minutes to try and reset the fridge, and also there is a few servos in the back of the fridge that allow water to dispense when it receives a signal, you might have to ohm those, it’s one of the two back there, if your fridge dispenses water then it could be the servo or whatever it is called in the back, but when you pull it out to unplug it pull the back cover off and check those too. Hope this helps

    • @biggwall3158

    • @Azkeyguy
      @Azkeyguy  4 роки тому +1

      I would check those servos (I think that’s what they are called) behind the access panel on the back. I had to google the technicians manual for the fridge and that will give you a troubleshooting checklist to weed out any issues. Wish I could help better but google the tech sheet and you should be able to pin it down

    I can't imagine designing a refrigerator and thinking it's ok to use thick solid single core wire here, it obviously needs a fairly high count fine stranded wire with flexible insulation. These refrigerators cost a small fortune and they build them like junk.

    • @Azkeyguy
      @Azkeyguy  2 роки тому +1

      Right!! They use wire just thick enough to withstand enough bends to get it through the warranty period, and then they snap, they probably spent more time and money on researching how many bends it takes instead of spending it on actually making a lasting product! Thanks for watching!
