Aha! I'd seen another z4 that had the picture on the buttons scratched off, and found it very odd. Now we know it's fixable! These are the the gems that I search for!
Thanks for this, Dave - I wouldn't have bought the new buttons, let alone tried to install them without first watching this video, and then re-watching each step as I went through the removal/re-assembly process along with you. The only note I would add is when I started the car after re-installing everything, and tried to set the Parking Brake to make sure it was working, I got a Parking Brake error (red icon) on the dash, and the Parking Brake wouldn't set. I turned the car off, re-started it and these errors went away - for a moment I figured I hadn't connected the Parking Brake wiring correctly, but all is good. These buttons are a small detail, but the old scratched ones were something I noticed every time I got into the car - not any more! Thanks again!
At 5:42, I managed to perform this step. Its important to have gloves on, especially if you are doing this for the first time. The risk of cuts is very high. Removing this "buttons panel" will be easier if you have another helper to assist with holding the tabs on. The prying tool may be too "big" to pry loose the "buttons panel". The small screw drivers are a must. Prying tools help minimise risk of damaging the trims, so don't skimp on these. Finally, thanks Dave! That was (and still is) totally helpful. Watched it for umpteen times before taking the dive. Turned out pretty good! PS: Great short project over the weekend.
You don't need a helper. As you pry up each tab, leave the pry device (small screwdriver or plastic tool) in place and go to the next three tabs and leave the pry device in place. Then lift it up and out.
Daviid, another great video. You have a terrific talent for this. I couldn't previously find heated seat buttons, so I bought the entire switch panel. You've given me great confidence to put in this switch panel and at the same time put in the Idrive controller/Android 11 head unit when I get these goods in February. Thanks again.
Hi Nigel, Yes, it'll be an E89, and I'm glad you like the channel 👍got some new content coming soon, and something extra special coming very soon indeed 😎
@@BMWZ4Mods cheers for that, I’m thinking of changing the salmon relays ..on eBay £20 each is it a standard relay …only salmon ones I can find they say it’s for mine..
Aren’t these buttons standard in the e89? My one has roof up/down and parking and double heated seat buttons - I thought this was a standard feature? 🤔 maybe I got lucky without realising!
No, nothing is standard on a Z4 😂 Everything is down to whatever the original owner opted for from the factory. The basic is the two roof buttons only, then the options are heated seats, PDC or Statt/Stop.
Hi, nice video, however my Z4 E89 has the automatic transmission knob with indicators, as shown on the picture in your video and it isn't possible to remove the console with the knob/trim, doesn't fit through the hole? Any advise? Thanks :)
Arr, as per the video, pop the surround trim up, disconnect the ribbon cable then pull upwards on the knob (watch out for the mirror!!). This will release it completely. Hope that helps.
@@BMWZ4Mods Thanks for the quick reply, so the ribbon cable disconnected and then just pull the knob WITH trim/cable upwards so knob + trim/cable is removed compleet so I can remove the console over the knob shaft to exchange the buttons using your video?
Quick question not related to this video but I have a drivers side seat that the lumbar adjustment doesn’t work ( you can hear the electric motor working but it’s not adjusting the support either in or out 🤔) would you be able to advise or possibly a video, thanks
Alas, my seats don't have lumber support. But what I do know is that the motor is a pump that inflates a bag. So if it's not inflating and the motor is running, then either the pipe has come off or the bag has burst. Looks like you're going to have to take the seat out. If doing this, I suggest disconnecting the battery before unplugging the seat to prevent any airbag faults coming up. Hope that helps.
Hi I realize now I meant the seat side bolster not lumbar as I originally stated 🙄 As you say I’ll have to take seat out for a better chance of sorting it as there is nothing obvious to see with seat in situ 🤔
If you see in the video, I didn't change them, I simply removed them one at a time and replaced it back. I'd already done it when I decided to make the video.
Hi Dave, thanks for the content! is it possible to replace the 12v socket in the ashtray? Whilst mine does kind of work it isn’t powerful enough to power a usb socket and I therefore can’t charge my phone.
Well that's odd, in two different ways.. Firstly because it should as its only an electrical connection. Ie; 12vdc comes in via the two wires (12v+ & 12v-) and is then connected to the USB adaptor. Have you tried it in the centre console 12v socket? I say ut should as I use one in both of them. Possibly check the socket with a meter to see if it's getting the correct voltage, also try tge USB adaptor in another car. And the other reason is because I've just replaced replaced mine, as I'd cut it previously so it was a bit short. I replaced it with one from an E82/7 as it was cheaper and the same fitting (and a bit longer).
Hi Dave, the USB adapter works fine in the centre console 12v socket. I’m able to charge my phone that way but would rather not have a cable running across the interior, plus due to the thickness of the cable the centre console won’t shut. Do you have the parts number for the replacement socket you bought? I’ll also test it with a multimeter. Thanks
@@nathandearn471 sorry but I don't have a part number, I just looked through eBay and found a full ashtray complete (still cheaper than one for the E89!!). It's a perfect exchange for the E89 as I checked plenty of photos first to make sure. Before buying one though I'd suggest checking the contacts in the socket and also at the molex connector plug under the trim, just to make sure you are getting 12v at the molex plug, if nit then you'll need to investigate further back into the loom. @@milovan8565 will the surround plastic flex away from the switch housing when you are putting the pry tool in (as in the video)? If so are you pushing the switch up with your fingers at the same time?
@@BMWZ4Mods yes that is my procedure. I separately sent you a more time urgent question on the fiber optic cables transfer on your Android video. Anxious to learn your answer on that one.
Many E89 cars have, in the same switch block, the seat heating switch covers scratched. I have failed finding those on Amazon and other places. Someone here has a source?
Alas I've not been able to find the heated seat button either. I find it strange that someone has gone to the trouble of making the PDC button but not the heated seat ones, as I find a lot more have seat heating than PDC (front). Maybe someone will soon, so I'll keep looking.
It's not so much "popping" them off, it's getting the new ones back on. Because of the rear hooks you need to be able to put them in from the rear (front of the car as in situ) and then slide them slightly before clipping them in. This would be impossible with the switch block in place without damaging something. Hope that helps
