I could listen to Adrian for hours, I'm sure if he had his own UA-cam channel just asking viewers questions each week it would be one of the most popular channels ever.
I have been following Adrian's career since he was with Bobby Rahal in Indycar through his intuitive and hands-on approach to creating benchmark F1 cars. I read his book with great interest, but it is great hearing the stories first hand like this. Thank you!
These interviews are excellent. I save them to listen too whilst out running. The miles just fly by. Some great characters who interview really well. Many thanks 😁👍.
@Jeff Mattel ... expressed myself wrongly ... you are right ... absolutly right ... you angry at yourself ... ignorant you call me with one comment you read from me ...
Interesting and impressive interview, liked how he respects Mauro Forghieri, Patrick Head, John Barnard, Gordon Murray, and Rory Bryne. I was slightly surprised he didn't mention his modern counterpart Aldo Costa who worked for Mercedes Benz's designer of the last 5 WDC/WCC and former Ferrari and Rory Bryne's protege.
Newey, Byrne - surely the greatest designers/aerodynamicists in F1 during the last 40 years! Great to see Newey giving Byrne the highest respects! Maximum respect. Other than John Barnard who in his biography says that no F1 Designer since the 80's was innovative. Except of himself...Yes crazy John, of course! Also your improvements in aerodynamics...thats why your cars were always known to have bad aerodynamics in the 90's! Really good to see that Newey is a fair and humble guy, giving another great engineer and biggest opponent his respect, other than crazy Barnard.
Great interview. with one of the genuinely great F1 designers. The best of the F1 designers introduce design features that often become the standard in F1. Chapman designed the first true monocoque; Barnard was the first to do a full carbon fibre chassis and brought the electronic gear change; Gordon Murray introduced push/pull rod suspension. Newey has done several things that gave such a large technical advantage they were banned (blown diffusers is but one) and the steep rake that is now a feature across the F1 field (he brought it from Indy car racing, but making it work across many seasons in F1 has been far more challenging). Newey's ability to "interpret" gaps in the rules is outstanding. Personally, I was disappointed with his comments on Mark Webber, although he acknowledged Marko's bias towards Vettel. To my mind, the in-car shots from Turkey show without any doubt that Vettel drove into Webber - Webber left little room, but he stayed on his line, so the lack of support for that and the "multi-21" incident clearly undermined Webber's place in the team. I suspect that if Webber had ignored team orders and passed Vettel for a win, Marko would have been furious, if not apoplectic. It was no wonder Webber felt the team and Marko in particular favoured Vettel.
Now that Adrian's doing the RB17 track car, years after theValkyrie. I wonder whether he's already thinking of the LMP Hypercar regulations. "Balance of Performance" will kill any advantage except for perhaps durability, but LeMans would be on the cards and getting penialized HARD for being the better car would be his personal victory.
It was a good talk show. However, I really wish that you had spent more time on the technological developments brought forwards by Newey. The time spent talking about mid-field drivers was, in my opinion, unnecessary, given that their history is already well documented. Newey's design leaps are not, in detail. It is very difficult to find good information on most of his Formula One innovations. Please consider this observation in future interviews. Thank you very, very much for, yet again, shining a light on the history of F1. Much appreciated.
Great Interview with one of F1's best Designers ever! Very nice and gentle guy! And a real Genius! Great how he shows respect to other Great Designer, even his long-time rival Rory Byrne! Speaking about Rory Byrne i have to say - Adrian Newey is called the Michelangelo of Motorsports. But comparing Newey and Byrne for the time they both designed the F1 Cars of their teams - 1988 - 2004 - Rory Byrnes cars won some more titles than Neweys...and Byrne was even 1 year away from F1. So with every respect to Newey - i think Rory Byrne was really the best Designer during that era. But Newey always was more present and in the focus of the Media, and had a more risky approach with his designing philosophy, while Byrne was always in the factory, steadily developing a car, less present and Never in the focus of the media, as he only went to races one Time a year. And i think thats the why Newey, even if he was less sucessfull than Byrne if you compare them directly, still gets more attention. But i think Rory is ok with that, as he always was and wanted to be in the background. His sucess and genius known by the people who have to Know it, but without being in the Public and Media spotlight, he always avoided! Rory is the silent hero behind one of the most dominating eras of F1, together with his friend and more spotlighted Ross Brawn.
Not enough reader's questions. Sorry. Great podcast, but could have been better. I expected more than 4 questions from readers in 1 hour and 7 minutes of limited time with the great Adrian Newey.
Peter B Hi Peter, that is totally my fault and I apologise! Adrian’s stories took a little linger than I had planned in my head and I got caught up in them not looking at my watch! Will make sure I get more in next time.
Now I know why RBR is not performing on the level of MB in F1. Half the engineers are hobbying on a not very affordable green city car. So much for mr. Horner's team principal capabilities.
mvmallinson Hands up - my fault! It’s a really difficult room to record in because of the huge table that we tried to cut... We’re always looking to improve so panic not! Ed.
Ed Foster appreciate your reply, sorry I was a little rude. I’m a great fan of Adrian and was frustrated by the problem to which you admit. Thank you again and please accept my apologies
F1 is dead now.Nothing new can be applicated into the cars.Everything is known everything was tested.Turbo engines ground efect active suspension active aerodynamics flappy paddles fan car 6 wheeled Tyrel etc.F1 is completely dead.Nothung interesting nothing new and with the end of the internal combustion engines watching of F1 would be nonsense.F1 died with the end of Brown's team adventure after that F1 was over forever and ever.
Had to switch off when it said, "... Carbon Footprint..." Just goes to show: Abundant smarts in one very specific area suggest nothing about the broader capacity to elude bamboozlement.
Wow, what a worthless interview. Newey earns $10,000,000 a year at Red Bull (every year). The RAC are mainly a bunch of volunteers. Try to shrink the elephant in the room that you weren't paid off to not ask him any Ayrton Senna FW16 questions. Not a SINGLE mention of Senna or 1994. I hated Motor Sport magazine for their biased reporting back in the 90's and apparently nothing has changed. You may have asked Newey how he designed the aero mounting points of the 16 to be identical to the 14 and 15 and forgot that the 16 would be required to cope with a much greater latitude in ride height due to it being passively sprung. Hence the initial reduced driveability of the early season 16. But why do I bother. I have over 100 issues of Motorsport Magazine from the 80's and 90's and it is striking how not a single issue has any technical knowledge in it whatsoever.
Hi gold333, sorry you think that we dodged the Senna story on purpose. The simple fact of the matter was that we had loads to discuss and we didn't have time to talk about everything. He talks about it in his book, which is worth a read. Best, Ed.
P.s. I should probably point out that Red Bull had nothing to do with the interview! Adrian agreed to chat to us and I am certainly not a volunteer - I get paid to host the podcasts. Also, worth noting that the editorial team at Motor Sport is completely different - bar Gordon Cruickshank - to what it was in the 1980s and 1990s. Anyway, sorry you didn't enjoy any of it.
I could listen to Adrian for hours, I'm sure if he had his own UA-cam channel just asking viewers questions each week it would be one of the most popular channels ever.
Every word that comes out of Newey's mouth has me completely captivated. Bravo for getting such a great guest.
Found this extremely interesting. I hope it gains some more traction as it definitely deserves it.
So nice to hear him give give Rory Byrne the highest respect.
I have been following Adrian's career since he was with Bobby Rahal in Indycar through his intuitive and hands-on approach to creating benchmark F1 cars. I read his book with great interest, but it is great hearing the stories first hand like this. Thank you!
Very enjoyable. Interesting and light hearted.Good to see the dream team of Foster and Arron back together.
John Bramwell Cheers John!
Another remarkable F1 personality.
Excellent interview with a remarkable icon of F1.....
GREAT INTERVIEW WITH A LEGEND !
A wonderful interview covering a lot of ground. Great insights from Adrian about an F1 driver's feedback even in a computer data age.
Probably the best interview I've watched from a Formula 1 person. The interviewers gave Adrian Newey the time and space to tell his story. Well done.
Thanks mundulla sa. The podcast format/hour-long interview is a great way to get longer answers...
Adrian Newey is always facinating to listen to, he's so modest!
Wow i can listen Adrien Newey much more great video and interview thanks.
This deserves so many more likes.
These interviews are excellent. I save them to listen too whilst out running. The miles just fly by. Some great characters who interview really well. Many thanks 😁👍.
I have always admired Adrian Newey.
Adrian Newey ... superphenomenon ... need technology also but still ... he does it with paper and pencil ... unbelievable ... supergenius man ...
@Jeff Mattel ... expressed myself wrongly ... you are right ... absolutly right ... you angry at yourself ... ignorant you call me with one comment you read from me ...
he is the major reason why red bull is up at the pointy end of the grid
Interesting and impressive interview, liked how he respects Mauro Forghieri, Patrick Head, John Barnard, Gordon Murray, and Rory Bryne. I was slightly surprised he didn't mention his modern counterpart Aldo Costa who worked for Mercedes Benz's designer of the last 5 WDC/WCC and former Ferrari and Rory Bryne's protege.
A sight for sore eyes, good to see you back Ed. :)
@Jeff Mattel A really tall guy that not many people know...!
Newey, Byrne - surely the greatest designers/aerodynamicists in F1 during the last 40 years! Great to see Newey giving Byrne the highest respects! Maximum respect. The god of engineering!
I took mine to on holiday last year brilliant book just needs signing now Adrian!!
Applied physics master. A great engineer with focused creativity, Big fan of this mans work I am.
One of the greatest geniuses in the F1 design, I once remember Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari period, "I'm not racing Seb, but Newey's perfect cars"..
Great interview. with one of the genuinely great F1 designers. The best of the F1 designers introduce design features that often become the standard in F1. Adrian Newey is my hero
Great to see Ed Foster back
Phil Turner Thanks Phil.
Just to echo other people's sentiments, really good to see Ed Foster back, always enjoyed his part in these interviews.
Michael Kenny thanks Michael. Much appreciated!
A real genius.
An incredibly smart man.
That March car could have won races with a better engine (no offence to John Judd).
It was a good talk show. However, I really wish that you had spent more time on the technological developments brought forwards by Newey.

i have read this book twice and loved it both times. Adrian is a very clever man indeed! Great interview as well, thanks for a great interview :)
Don't know why I keep saying great interview. Great interview!
can't believe I am the second person to comment - a God amongst Kings of Men in Formula 1
I'm the 8th person to comment.

That gentleman is highly intelligent. His head even looks bigger than a normal persons.
Oven King "that gentleman is highly intelligent" gets the understatement of the decade 🥇
Head size has no correlation with intelligence apparently. Neuroscience!
The best aerodynamicist EVER.
32:10, this is the story Vettel told on Top Gear. But he told it incorrectly. It wasn't Piquet, but Patrese!
read his book it's pretty good
Fnargl just pretty good? Haven't been it yet, worth the coin?
Is it good to read if you don't have any knowledge about the technic aspects of cars?
Newey is a very very smart man and a absolute legend
The Seagrave room! Beautiful as ever
come here after reading this book
Not enough reader's questions. Sorry. Great podcast, but could have been better. I expected more than 4 questions from readers in 1 hour and 7 minutes of limited time with the great Adrian Newey.

Seemed almost "ego" free, amazing
Now I know why RBR is not performing on the level of MB in F1. Half the engineers are hobbying on a not very affordable green city car. So much for mr. Horner's team principal capabilities.
Damn I didn't know he wrote a book!!! Finally pulp worth spending money on.
add to that list bio on Barnard
Does Simon know comparing this mans work to static engineering in buildings is almost insulting.
Adrian o mundo da F1 te ama
Could anyone tell me who did the John Surtees painting on the wall?
Legend
Is that the Mountbatten room at the RAC club?
Hi Matthew, it's the Segrave Room!
Nigel Mansell was a naughty naught boy during the 1992 season
The irony of the fact that Adrian Newey wanted the Valkyrie to race at LeMan is so sad. Lawrence Stroll had to ruin that opportunity for him
Please get involved and bring hydrogen power to the masses, Adrian!
Hilarious framing.
Luke Canty Agree, in fact so bad I can’t watch it. Who is the total idiot who decided this looked good?
mvmallinson Hands up - my fault! It’s a really difficult room to record in because of the huge table that we tried to cut... We’re always looking to improve so panic not! Ed.

I love Adrian Newey and for my money, he is only second to Champman. But damn he is hard to listen to.

F1 has got to be the biggest waste of money on the planet.
HENRY BARTLETT , you’re second.
Yes but what a glorious waste it is .
newey killed senna killer
Do n’t be so silly

can he not afford a barber..
He can afford whatever he wants. Maybe he hasn't got such crappy priorities.
Show me a stylish genius throughout history . True geniuses don't give two fucks about vanity gladly

Can someone narrate over him cos he is so boring
Fantastic stuff as usual. Thanks Motor Sport.
