- Roads in England and Wales are at "breaking point" with pothole repairs at an eight-year high, according to a new report.
The annual Alarm survey by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) found that local authorities expect to fix two million potholes in the current financial year.
That is up 43% compared with 1.4 million during the previous 12 months and it is the highest annual total since 2015-16 when 2.2 million potholes were filled in.
The survey found that average highway maintenance budgets increased by 2.3% in the 2023-24 financial year compared with the previous 12 months.
TalkTV's Julia Hartley-Brewer is joined by motoring journalist Quentin Wilson who says the push to move away from four-wheeled cars have left the roads in 'crumbling ruin.'

The British people should not be paying for council taxes because nothing is done period
Your council tax is being used to pay housing benefits
john prescot also said that there is room in this country for 80 million people
I think we are well past that. Just over a decade ago there was a survey conducted by the main supermarkets of essential items sold, and based on their findings they estimated the UK population to be around 76 million.
What it is now is anyone's guess, because for sure the government doesn't know - and apparently doesn't care either.
Locally to me drivers spend a lot of the time dodging between the potholes as they are so bad! No way are cops going to pull everyone over for careless driving in these circumstances!
Filling a hole quickly with a plug of tarmacadam is useless and a waste of time and quickly degrades again.
For some time now, I've thought that Central Government should 'ring fence' budgets for Roads (money raised through the Road Tax and the Duties / VAT on Fuel, say) - this money is raised BECAUSE of Road Transport and so that money should be used FOR roads, nothing else. Will never happen though.
My car has 30mm profile tyres, never again! Next car is gonna have farmer spec tyres with a huge sidewall, the roads are only gonna get worse
I bought a qashqai for same reason.. got fkd off with rims and chassis getting damaged by ramps and holes.. cars were never lowered too
I remember a few year back where a council had a £36.000 new toilet fitted !!
Roads are so bad that it’s like Africa and Pakistan
A few factors have caused pot holed roads.
1 government and councils hate drivers, discourage driving
2 no investment in road infrastructure as not seen as eco/green
3 massive migration
4 heavier and more powerful vehicles. Turning, breaking etc forces much greater.
5 work to damaged utilities resulting in low quality patch repairs.
6 cost of claims from drivers doesn’t exceed cost of repairing roads yet.
As a founder of Stop Burning Stuff I wonder wether Mr Wilson is aware it’s necessary to burn stuff to make the necessary repairs. The blatant hypocrisy is amusing.
To many cars on the road, massive uptake in home delivery, heavy status simble cars like range rovers, and Audi, BMW equivalent. Ultimately, this country is now to crowded. European roads are like driving on glass.
Really, it's been this for years, and we should demand an independent audit on councils and government spending, and The question remains where all the money we pay for in taxes, car tax council tax for our infrastructure is being siphoned off to?
INVADERS !!
@@tonyh1515 so they would have you think. That's all distraction
Cancel the foreign aid budget for 5 years, spend the money on repairing the roads. Job done.
A lorry and suv are one in a handful but if every car weight is more it will be more stain on the road and the break in between heavy and light weights gives breather so roads last longer.
Where’s the Road Tax money going? Around 160£ per year for a hatchback..and there’s millions of cars in London
Why is this not happening anywhere else in the world?
Something doesn't add up.
Touchy, on the pay- roll., HGV don't go down the small streets which tend to be full of holes.
Exactly what I thought. His argument might make sense on motorways and major roads, other than that it's a question of traffic ratios.
Roads where I live are full of pot holes and the council have come along and spent money on 'Speed bumps'......
Rather than go into maintaining roads, our money goes into implementing and upgrading systems to help incriminate us. All around West Yorkshire I've noticed that the speed cameras have been updated en mass, at God knows what cost. Meanwhile, I have to drive everywhere looking at the road surface and weaving in and out to avoid potholes.
It's okay, I have a tractor I use to navigate the roads
Money wasted on covid !!
The money is supposed to come from CAR TAX THATS WHY WE HAVE TO PAY IT
There is no such thing as car tax, it was abolished in 1937.
There are many in power who want to get cars and lorries off the roads. The worse they get, the more they expect people to stop driving.
Any luck one of the newly arrived engineers can come up with a solution to our road woes...
50 years since we put a man on the moon and gave him a car to drive around in… the surface of our roads are worse than the moon…
Tyre companies are now reacting. I just bought a set on conti's with re-enforced thicker side walls for my mercedes on 19" rims.
The government are getting millions of pounds a year on speeding fines, mobile phone fines, road tax. Were is this money going? Use the money to fix the road and stop spending it elsewhere.
Where I live the council put up a sign making a road into a bus only lane.
Everyone I know got a ticket there.
The sign was put behind a tree
The tree was definitely there first.
If you’re just off the boat from Afghanistan you would be well impressed by our roads.
Pretty soon most of the population won’t complain about the roads because where they come from they just have tracks…I think that’s what the councils are hoping for.
We need more public transport, abandoning the only rail project the country has
All the money's being spent on cycle tracks that nobody wants or uses to meet our net zero targets' they'll be coming for your car next' vote reform stop the war on motorists.
More like sinkholes in some places.
Always seem to have the money for LTNs and cameras
HGVs are heavier but there are a lot less of them that cars
The M1 Northbound between J26-J27 Outside lane Is full of pot 🕳!
We have a few so deep someone put a traffic cone in them and you can barely see the top of the cone.
Even when you report them. They dont get repaired. There are. Hundreds in derbyshire. Roads totally breaking down.
I heard the public wants tax cuts rather than fixing the roads.
Let's face it we can't get any worse with crap roads
I can see now why Eddie Hall has bought a tank !
if public transport wasn't unreliable, expensive, constantly on strike and rubbish people would use it.
Stockport is the worst council.know job done where I live waisting money where it is not needed. Even Manchester City council is better than Stockport council
Why do we pay council tax again ????
The roads are getting bad.. i keep seeing what looks like a top layer of road surface disappearing in spots revealing an under layer and this is becoming a very familiar sight.
Road tax goes up year on year. Roads get worse and worse. To busy bombing around the world to bother looking after our own house.
They use the road tax for other things not the roads. It's a con.

Global Britain leading the way in the world, thanks God we left the poor and corrupt EU,we are envy of the world💪💪💪
Apparently 10billion spent this year on the Ukraine war. What do you expect!
Where is the road tax money going then?
Most of the roads that are disintegrating that I see around London - residential streets - do not have 44 ton HGVs driving down them. Electric vehicles do weigh more than lorries, and there are many more cars than lorries.
Exactly my thoughts. Willson take note!
Our roads it’s like driving in a third world country….lol
All talk no action TV
Honest John Wilson lol. He looks older than he actually is ?
Well, you lot railed against the one politician in the last 40 years who made it policy (rather than a verbal promise) to put money into public services with funds clawed back through proper use of the Tax Laws. But no you wanted Boris 'cos Brexit would be great for you....
The governments neglect of our roads will lead to massive problems for EVs as they damage the undersides & batteries leading to EV explosions, fires & bigger insurance claims. Ha ha ha!
We always have money for Ukraine and India space programme ved is ramping right up disastrous mismanagement
Isnt it wilson who is running & pushing an EV car business!!!!!!
Thay spand money on migrants never mid them get the roads sorted
The pot holes must be making his cheques from the EV manufacturers fall off his passenger seat, and if you bump your battery on the road you could be looking at a bill for £50,000 if you own a Hyundai.
Remember Remember
Vote KHAN out
2nd May
Horses will be back
Instead of giving £billions to Ukraine, put the money into our infrastructure!
Well we will keep sending money to ukraine....
No Mention of Basketcase EV's that are far heavier than a conventional petrol/diesel vehicles that are making the roads worse!
What about all the large suvs on the road, Range Rovers, Audi and BMW. These things ways over 2.5 Tonne. Mid size vans too like the Ford Transit, they weigh more than most evs. Isn't thus a problem too?
Used to enjoy some of Quentin's work until he became an EV Evangelist
EV loving Quentin always dismisses the weight of EV’s as making the problem worse siting 43T lorries as the culprit. The worst roads by far where I live are pretty much all car only with strict weight limits. What we do have being a reasonably affluent area is hundreds of Teslas. Explain that one Quentin!
More likely to be the diesel Range Rovers. They are heavier.
It's your electric cars causing all the damage Mr Wilson
Bmw x5 2190kg
Range Rover 2510kg
Audi Q7 2417kg
Mercedes GLS 2460kg
Transit van 2299kg
Porsche Macan GTS 2035kg
BMW M3 1940kg
Tesla model 3 performance 1835kg
Tesla model Y 1909kg
All fact.
So much BS out there just because people don't agree with something.
Roads that will be made even worst by heavy EV's - no thanks !!
Wilson is a shill for EVs.
Quentin that's your heavy EV not helping:)
this is the rot they ignore in favour of other foreign affairs
Gonna need to recruit more lifeguards soon! So many lives at risk of drowning.
