My mantra: paddle on the toeside, lean forward to catch the wave, the shift back in a full surf stance. Without the last step, my board was going down the wave slope under the water to be joined by me shortly.
im using a 10 foot 6 adventure board and its a bit challenging to learn. The waves I have caught have been some of the best moments of my life though lol.
I've been surfing since I was 18. I'm 46 now, and my age and weight has affected me to the point I can no longer pop-up. I stopped surfing about 3 years ago. Although depressing, this is giving me hope of getting back out on the water. Any suggestions on a good brand of SUP? I weigh 230 (but I'm trying to lose the weight)
Similar buddy but I’m 48. I brought a Tiki 9’6 32” and if I’m honest it’s two inches too narrow. Massive tip I had was to use the paddle to stand up because it helps us older less supple guys but also keeps you facing forward. Have fun.
Dude, I'm 59 this year, I started by buying a Longboard 6 years ago at the age of 52. I went out in tiny shorebreaks and was exhausted after 10-15 mins! It took me 9 months of learning to build my paddle fitness up. The, one day I realised I'd been out for 3½ hours! I bought a 7'6" mini-mal that day. Surfed it for about 2 weeks. Move onto a short board (huge, thick, 6'8"), then I got a fish and my surfing improved exponentially! Baby steps is what I'm saying! Don't give up and start supping. I didn't get fit till I got onto the shorter boards, then the weight just fell off me (they're hard work!) Now I'm on a 6'2" performance board, and I can manage about 2 hours max. I don't get a lot of waves, but I'm just happy to be out there. Most of my mates sup. They're still fat 😆 Eat an apple, walk it off (Bill Burr) ua-cam.com/video/iiCPAoOL83M/v-deo.html
Very nice and fundamentally spot on in the physics of wave vs body positioning. I live in Hawaii with all wave forms at my disposal. Dying to get--no pun intended--to the point of being comfortable on the north shore. Pretty much moved up to Queens beach... Publics surfspot for that transition. Taking this ol 58yr old a yr to figure out this sup surfing. Many reef scars and snapped fins from the reefs... yet I'm still standing!!! (pun intended. lol) #STILLNOTTHERE
Learning to surf or sup is not easy. I have a lot of experience in wakeboard and both water and snow skiing... pretty coordinated for an old fuck, but when it comes to surfing that was a lot different ... from the paddle out, duck diving, foot placement, catching the wave and of course keeping in the pocket. Each one of those steps were a challenge, I should say are a challenge... but i love learning this great sport. And I also found that asking a better surfer of any age most often is helpful so long as you’re not fucking up their program. Showing respect to a fellow surfer can go a long way with tips.
My sup came with a coiled leash and I've been using that for 3 years now. Not the best idea but my biggest problem is when you wipe out and the leash tangles itself so your foot can't move so you gotta take your leash off. Took me 5 mins to untangle.
Is this possible to do on a lake (as in the wake of a boat)? I know it's not really "true surfing" but I don't live anywhere close to an ocean or anywhere very wavy.
@@wyattpomeroy3707 not quite, that's surf stance, hybrid is in between standard sup parallel stance and surf stance, feet's still on either side but one forward one back, use it when paddling to catch waves then switch to surf stance
Tried a straight leash today. It was the worst experience of my life, as fell off the board whilst trying to surf a wave the cord wrapped around my neck whilst the board was pull away by the wave. I would not recommend a straight leash
Good eye Thomas! That's actually a hybrid leash designed specifically for surfing by FCS, it has a straight section followed by a coiled section. They were popular for a minute for surfing, but then everyone realized the coil still tangles up when you're in the whitewater.

Getting a paddle board this month, can’t wait!
The more I practise, the more I need to watch these videos. Thank you!!!

Very nice video! Thanks a lot! I've choose the board for myself with this video!

Sure is, they even make "wake" SUPs now too, just for behind a boat.
Idk if you can truly "surf" but it's fun to ride big swells and wakes and rough water even if you can't
brother, good afternoon, I'm from Brazil. I use in my stand up a central keel of 12 and smaller stabilizers. It's correct?
Love this! So beautiful 💙🤙🏽🌊

"Whats your opinion on this:

what is a hybrid stance?
Almost a surf stance, with one foot in front.
Instead of side by side ur feet are front and back like skate boarding or surfing

Dave nice, I’m not much of a surfer. Just long boarding but I’m looking into getting a sup
Great video as always!

I don't get the hate that the "og surfers" are throwing at sup riders. It's the same thing. They ride long boards and they just have a paddle haha.
I think people feel like it's "cheating" because I'm assuming surfing in SUP is much easier than traditional surfing.
@@joemonroe2249 You're assuming
Even laird Hamilton does sup surfing
👍
Look this up on youtube - DARTH VADER RETIREMENT, PADDLING LA RIVER (Jones Earl James Narration) S2E1b River Wild Part 2

Nice...
so he said you cant surf with other people unless ur a world class surfer :/
A life jacket is required in some du coubtries!
biggest challenge you will always be considered a kook by many, in the line up!!!!
Sure, until they prove they can out shred you.
Ya, tell that to Laird when he's paddling into jaws.
Your mum was a challenge...being considered a kook should be nothing 😆
I’m already a kook so it’s too late
everytime a paddleboarder comes my way, the spot gets that much more crowded
Why?
Everywhere is crowded--7 billion ppl, small planet, etc. Just get out there and have fun and try to be nice to others. :)
I love how they say no coiled leashes and then the women is using a coiled leash. Pretty poor for a safety/instructional video!
