The Witness gave me a lot of insight into puzzle design and communicating/synergizing ideas. It taught me many important lessons I took to my own game design and puzzle design, and it is also one of my favorite games in what it sets out to do - and what it _does not_ set out to do. Overall, many of the criticisms towards it are valid, as each person will have a unique experience and takeaway from it, but I sincerely appreciate that it goes out of its way to be as unique and inventive as possible, in a time where many of the popular games feel samey :) (and of course, it was a nice intro to Joel, even if I didn't realize it until much much later lmao)
Hi Hugo! Yes I think we've got a number of changes in puzzle design to thank it for - they may not have been original, as most things aren't - but The Witness team were able to popularize... normalize them. It was it's own thing, even if you didn't like it! --Joel
This game feels both over appreciated and under appreciated at the same time. Those that play it and get the eureka moment(s) feel compelled to tell as many people as possible about it, but a lot of people are turned off by it's "pretentious" side. I think it's a masterpiece and there'll never be another one.
@@PixelisedPaul This is true. There are things which are lovely about it but other parts are off. But The Witness was a real moment in puzzle gaming which I created its own gravity. --Joel
