This cursed sokoban from the Baba Is You dev broke my brain (Gridmount)
A brand new entry in Baba Is You developer's huge collection of cursed block-pushers - thought I'd check it out, and woah, does this game do some horrendous things!

Upcoming MetroidBRAINia time-loop game where knowledge is power! (Echo Weaver - Demo)
Переглядів 27614 годин тому
Very exciting to see a game actively describing itself as a "metroidbrainia" - a relatively new term for games where new areas to explore are unlocked through knowledge, rather than items or upgrades. In this Echo Weaver demo, we're stuck in a really short time-loop, discovering new skills and techniques that will allow us to progress deeper into the facility. This is @JoePlaysPuzzleGames playi...
Someone turned Minecraft redstone into a puzzle game! (Pight - Demo)

I've always thought Minecraft redstone was a great system for making interesting puzzles, so it's super cool to see Mindlabor turning it into this pure puzzle game, Pight. Apparently Pight = Piston Light, haha. I really enjoyed solving puzzles with these mechanics and would love to see more puzzles with the mechanics that are introduced over the last few levels. This hedgehog family solve sokoban puzzles! (Prickle - Demo)

I've had my eye on this little hedgehog-themed sokoban game for a while, and finally got around to playing the demo. These are nicely designed puzzles! Rotation is a little tricky to work with, as it is in any grid-based game (lookin' at you, Bonfire Peaks), but very interesting to think about combined with the hedgehog-pricking mechanics. God I love this game, shame it’s so out there and user unfriendly.
There should be "space-bending" genre/vibe in the database :)
only thing that could make this worse is combining it with baba is you
Covemount is a series of weapons aimed directly at the frontal lobe
I feel "Oh no" is the desired reaction of every mount game
I got stuck on the basic sokoban on the 2nd level so I'm glad you posted this so I could "play" vicariously through you!
Tunic and the new Animal Well are probably the most famous MetroidBrainias. Also, if I had to guess some text adventures must of done it before, but like a comment said Myst is probably the earliest example of a MB except it is not an exact analogy.
I wouldn't count Animal Well as a metroidbrainia, the aspects of knowledge progression it has are more just one-offs that don't build upon each other, are QoL mechanics or are discovered naturally through experimentation. Metroidbrainias like Outer Wilds or The Witness give you puzzles that then give you info that then helps you solve more puzzles, leading to the aspect of there being puzzles that you could have solved from the start but just didn't know how to. The closest Animal Well ever comes to that is with the flute but there's only ever one degree to it; that anything 8 directional is most likely flute related, it doesn't go further than that. All the flute puzzles solely rely on successfully interpreting the code, none of them rely on you learning a new thing that then helps you solve another, they either just help you get something to collect or are a teleport code. The hidden interactions with items are never taught and are expected to be found through just experimentation as well. I think that's the thing with metroidbranias, it's not just that there's knowledge progression, the progression itself involves tutorialisation and builds upon itself. Any game is bound to have elements that can be interacted with differently if you knew what to do from beginning, typical stuff like passcodes or where stuff is, the difference is whether those puzzles require you to learn from previous ones.
@@wisnoskij No Metroidbrainia conversation is complete without mentioning the GOAT: Toki Tori 2+.
@@thinkygames What makes it all the more frustrating with how underrated it is, is that it literally is the first game to commit to those kinds of mechanics. I had so much fun making a new save when I realised what it was doing, trying to figure out the extent to which I could progress without the game showing what the end goals were. Really deserves more attention.
Gioco da provare assolutamente, qualcosa di diverso che ti impegnerà la testa e ti divertirà. Consiglio
I played this demo the other day and I absolutely love the presentation style! I do feel like it's a little on-the-nose at times, like when it says "Shortcut Discovered" on the screen instead of letting the player realize they've discovered a shortcut. But that's just a minor nitpick. Other than that, this game definitely feels like a day one purchase!
Thank you so much for the video. I hope you enjoyed playing it. 🤘
Ooo, Pight! I saw this game in the brand new ✨*Thinky Games database* ✨ and played the demo yesterday. Very cool stuff, but felt it could use more information/text (though I guess the minimal UI means less localization work) :P 0:15 - I actually didn't make this connection until now! 0:37 - Close enough :P 4:17 - On that topic, I do appreciate that the creators changed the block texture from the companion cube texture. I thought it was very out of place 8:51 - Oh, cool! Yeah, undo will be greatly appreciated It's a bit of an adaptation, but you're taking on the mantle of the streams/videos really quite well :)
It needs a grid as an option for sure. So you are The Other Joel ? Kidding, I know who you are, I just got used to Joel ;)

It has a grid as an option in the menu. You can see it in 8:18. Third option there. Thank you for your feedback <3
The child in me is so happy about this! ❤ Huge thank you and hope this will be updated periodically!
Awesome idea!

awesome!
So amazing 🤩
Awesome! It's a real pain on Steam to look for puzzle games similar to the ones that I really enjoyed.
Great idea!
Question: Where can we report errors such as misapplied tags? For example, "No narrative" does not belong to the DROD games; they have fully voiced stories.
We've actually updated the DROD games after a discussion on Discord. A tricky thing with those tags is that we use them to drive recommendations, and so sometimes something is labelled "No narrative" when what we really mean is "Well if you're looking for a narrative-driven game, we probably wouldn't include this". However, that just means we need better/clearer labelling.
yall are so real for this
Ideally I'd be able to filter by 'slightly less difficult than the hardest puzzles in Cosmic Express' but it's a damn fine thing regardless.
I don't know that one, but many of the puzzles in Snakebird are damnably impermeable. Which would you say has the hardest puzzles?
Love it!
Awesome! Is there a way to submit our own games to the site? I have an Xbox/PC Sokoban inspired puzzle game that I'd like to get added if I can (Déjà Vu).
Hey, Deja Vu is actually on our backlog already! As you can imagine, it's a big backlog and we also want to cover new games coming out, but I'm sure we'll be able to get to everything! (for some definition of "everything").
Awesome initiative!
Very cool! 😃
whoa
Is this really old, Did the kickstarter not end months ago?
The stream is recent, but the kickstarter did indeed end a while ago. I hear they do have some news to announce about the game soon though.
You should try lorelei and the laser eyes if you like puzzles, also fitting for the spooky month
I've played the full thing on my personal channel @JoePlaysPuzzleGames if you're interested! I loved the game.
He's already done it on his main channel
Hey folks! Hope you don't mind a new face on these videos! If you didn't see, Joel is stepping away from Thinky Games to get on with the rest of his busy life and I'll be taking over, at least for a bit. We have a bunch of big things happening over the next couple of weeks, but I'm excited to start thinking about how to make our streams and videos even better. In fact.... any suggestions? What do you want to see from this channel?
Great insight. Thank you!
Awesome, Thanks for checking it out :D

hoplite is a absolute classic!
The deepest I ever made it was to Level 46. I wrote intensely about my Hoplite obsession back in 2019. "Down there, Hoplite becomes parkour violence, where the player impales, slashes, leaps and tears through the hordes. I can’t stop killing. To stop killing is to stop living." www.electrondance.com/hoplite/ -- Joel
The greatest game of all time. The DLC was just as good. It was surprisingly scary too. I was playing it at 2am and I had to turn the lights on in my room because I was so scared lmao.
@@bestsnowboarderuknow It does have a horror vibe! I was always freaked out on Giant's Deep with the watery depths... --Joel
I kind of regret watching Joe (not Joel!!) play this. I mean, I thoroughly enjoyed his playthrough, but this is the type of game I would've loved working out the secrets on my own 😅
@@HugoBDesigner Ah, the path not taken. I will mourn for you loss over a drink tonight. --Joel

NUMBER FUCKING EIGHT!!!??? The disrespect is real!
This is the best GO game. Hitman and Deus Ex are not that good, played them both. When I bought Lara Croft GO I expected a very casual puzzler but I was surprised how well the puzzles were designed. Very good game.
@@RejectAllCookies13 uh oh, I have another comment suggesting Hitman GO is a better game 🤔 --Joel
@@thinkygames I would have to say that Lara Croft GO is a much better game. Hitman is not bad but it has easy puzzles and some cool stuff but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who likes puzzles.
@@RejectAllCookies13 thanks for your viewpoint --Joel
I for one think that Hitman GO is a much better game. It has multiple hard goals per level, and this hunt for shiny things in LC GO is not thinky at all. Still, both games managed to capture the essence of the parent games well.
Basically you're saying if I made Twelve Even More Games I Love, Hitman GO should be on it :) --Joel
Definitely, if you loved this one, you'd probably like Hitman GO even more.
Really appreciate this game, I convinced also my girlfriend (that doesn't play video games) to played and he enjoyed it. I also suggest you to play Hitman Go (more interesting than Deus Ex Go in my opinion).
@@DavideScarioni maybe Lara Croft GO is a de facto gateway game for puzzle games 🤔 Maybe I'll attempt Hitman GO one of these days (I've never actually played a Hitman game either!!!) --Joel
This was actually my very first puzzle game so it's nice to see other people like it too. Now I have over 200 of them.
@@bobbob905 This is a genuinely joyful game, I wouldn't even categorise it as "guilty pleasure", it is put together with such class. Shame the developer was killed off by Embracer. --Joel
6:44 - "You just have to look for a tiny bit of wispiness in the corner of the screen and think: hey, I see you" You mean like the one on the left side of the screen next to the beige pillar _while_ you were talking about them being hidden? 😏
@@HugoBDesigner exactly, I left this as an exercise for the viewer deliberately 🤣 --Joel
I've played Portal 2 for over 10 years, and even before then already loved it and was obsessed with it. It was my favorite game, unmatched by even incredible experiences like The Witness or Talos. But then I played Outer Wilds last year, and it took over by a huge margin. Never before have I played a game that impressed me as much as Outer Wilds did. The gameplay, the narrative, the impeccable soundtrack, the sheer brilliance of figuring out how everything works. I felt all the emotions and all the joy in the world, and am now a firm advocate for people to play it. The DLC was equally as memorable, and the overall experience reshaped how I think about games, and how they can be pieces of art on their own accord, rather than just entertainment or products. I don't think any other game I get to play will ever beat it. But I have been wrong before :)
@@HugoBDesigner It is an incredible once in a lifetime experience. Interesting that Portal 2 became your obsession! I liked Portal 2 but if I had plopped a Portal game into this list it would've been the original. Maybe that would've kicked off a big debate in the stream? --Joel
@@thinkygames A huge reason why Portal 2 became my favorite, besides the many new mechanics and much bigger game (gameplay-wise and story-wise) was the puzzle editor. Without it, I don't think it would've been as huge for me. It shaped a lot of who I am, as a person and as a gamedev, and gave me a platform to practice and thrive in level design. If this was an alternate universe in which Talos got an easy puzzle creator and Portal 2 didn't, I could easily see the roles being reversed. I've been making puzzles for it (and Portal-inspired puzzles in other games) for well over 10 years now. It's basically the one thing I'm known for lol
@@HugoBDesigner Oh cool. That's a whole world I know little about. (Hands in Thinky badge and gun, right on time.) --Joel
I always try to get more people interested in this game, the soundtrack is also one of my all time favorites
@@Cammymoop I think it would do better today (if only it didn't have that dexterity test in the middle of the game) --Joel
I started this one but fell off soon, I don't like The Witness so it is no surprise I didn't like it. Taki Tori 1 and 2 are classics, love both games. Taki Tori 2 is one of my all time favs.
@@RejectAllCookies13 I dare say Toki Tori 2+ would have been on my list if I'd played more of it. Bought it after a recommendation many many years ago and barely touched it (www.arcadianrhythms.com/2013/07/review-toki-tori-2) --Joel
@@thinkygames Toki Tori 2 is very good, I agree
Love this one. Finished it when it got out of Kickstarter.
