    Thanks for posting this great video! The West End line has been featured in many movies. Bay 50th station, the first stop out of Coney Island, was where the beginning of the famous chase scene from The French Connection started (and was filmed). Actor Gene Hackman (who played Detective Popeye Doyle), commandeers a car below the station and chases the Manhattan bound train (played by a R-42 mistakenly with "N" signage in the front) down toward 25th Avenue station and ultimately along 86th Street. Doyle lives in the Marlboro Projects, which you can see as the train leaves Bay 50th Street. Also, the beginning of "Saturday Night Fever" (John Travolta walking with the paint can) was filmed further down 86th Street, past Bay Parkway (I think by the 20th Avenue station) and the opening credits of "Welcome Back Kotter) also feature the West End and New Utrecht HIgh School.

    I like this service pattern! The Sea Beach Line and the West End Line both have three usable tracks but no regular express service. They both terminate at Coney Island, and they meet back together on the 4th Avenue Line. So why not run express trains outbound on the center track of the Sea Beach Line and inbound on the center track of the West End Line? The two center tracks combine to form a Q Express service that can run all day. This also allows higher frequencies on the express tracks of the Broadway Line by sending more trains to the Second Avenue Line. Instead of running select N and W trains to the Second Avenue Line because the 60th Street Tunnel is at capacity, run more Q trains like this.

      If they continue to build housing on Coney Island they're going to have to do something. 1 hour + to midtown is unacceptable.

    12:48 I see they fixed the signal (D4 565). I was on the Transit Museum Coney Island Fan Trip on July 10th (riding R1-9's and AB Standards) and we made a bonus trip from Stillwell Ave to 9th Ave and the 37th St Yard and back, from Track 2 (while the N was terminating at King's Hwy that weekend).
    That signal was busted in red, even with the next two signals showing green and even after radioing the control tower to no avail, the superintendent(?) on board with us had to climb down and *clip the trip arm so the Museum Train could pass, in both directions.* I was just amazed at the "professional communication" between the motormen and supervisors on board and control center via radio.

    Your subway videos are one of the clearest and brightest I've seen. Two questions... Don't the engineers have issues with you opening the front door and placing a camera on the end platform? What equipment are you using? How do you eliminate the wind noise? (okay, three questions...)

    • @morganlimes
      @morganlimes  Рік тому +2

      Thanks 😀 The operators or conductors don't see me placing the camera on the train edge because I use a reacher, so basically I just stand on the station platform and swiftly place it on the train edge. I use a gopro and the onboard microphone of the camera is good enough so that it doesn't capture wind noise (Atleast most of the time)

Then the Shuttle to the West side and the #1, #2 or #3 to Times Square. Back in my day, the #6 Uptown or Downtown Express was a joke. Too many signals, switches and that bridge at Hunts Point that kept slowing the train down. Thanks for the memories!!

    because it's so uneven. You find open granite on the walls of the Helsinki Metro; It is very stable.

    • @jimneutron157

      @@morganlimes Yeah that is a mystery to me also. But it shouldn't be a switch malfunction because they just replaced that whole switching complex less than 8 years ago, I believe. And yes, I don't think the operators got specific instructions about Bay 50th because I have seen videos from the same weekend with some stopping & some skipping the station. They may be stopping there (This is pure speculation now) to pick up passengers for a similar reason the J/Z stop at Marcy Ave before & after the Williamsburg Bridge.

    Woo Hoo! Another great video! Kinda odd that 5 of the 8 tracks, as you head north from Coney Island are on the Sea Beach side & 3 on the West End side. Show of hands - how many folks remember when the Coney Island Creek bridge was only 2 tracks vs the current set up of 4? images.cf.nycsubway.org/images/i45000/img_45691.jpg The flood control at the bridge & the wall to the west shows they are doing a lot of work to protect Coney Island Complex from Climate Change & Global Warming. Weird that this train stopped at Bay 50th Street. There is another video (Side View) of a Q skipping this stop. In my opinion Bay Parkway is the coolest stop on the West End behind 9th Ave because it has the 2 double crossovers & one of the coolest towers in the entire system. The turn right before 18th Ave is interesting for a few reasons. The large building on the left used to be a movie theater, now it's a Marshals. Secondly, if you are an operator unfamiliar with this line, the repeater from the local track may confuse you as you make the turn 8:37. It's like you are going through a red signal. Kind of strange that 62nd St is a transfer with the Sea Beach N line at New Utrecht Ave because they both meet at Coney Island & 36th St. Again, like at 18th Ave, After Fort Hamilton Pkwy the repeater can confuse TO's & I think this time it fooled the Operator, lol. The area around 9th Ave needs trash cleaned off the tracks & weeds killed. One of my favorite places in the whole system is after 9th Ave going down to 36th Street. It goes briefly to 8 tracks where the ramps rise up to 38th Street Yard. Then as the train descends, tracks reduce to 6 then 4 as the 5th Ave El ramps rise up. I have never seen any pictures or videos of trains or tracks on these ramps. Not even on NYCsubway.org. If anyone knows where I can find video or pictures, please let me know! This tunnel that goes under the Yard to the 36th Street portal is so cool & creepy looking with an interesting design & construction method. At one time there was a 4-track turn off planned at 36th Street instead of the 2 tracks currently in place. A bellmouth can be seen on the Manhattan bound local track right before 36th St & the initial parts of tunnels are also built for the express tracks (South of the 36th St where the platforms would be), & the SB local jets out where a track would descend. images.cf.nycsubway.org/images/maps/boylan-36thmap.gif So interesting! Just like the Southbound express approaching 36th St, I remember when there were no timer signals northbound into Atlantic Ave. I'm thinking a passenger may have been struck by a train as the reason to put timers here. Not 100% sure though. Great video again, much appreciated for the work! I can't believe how much of a ghost town it was. No trains were passed. : /
