So I have one of those collapsible circular laundry hampers that I never really used for laundry but just recently discovered one of my cats loves it and makes it her second home. A couple of weeks ago the metal coil inside the fabric started sticking out, and when I tried to bend it or push it back in it started sticking out further; until a foot and a half of tough springy wire was jutting out and I was tripping on it every time I walked by it. I tried bending it until it snapped off but I’m not Superman. I tried a small hacksaw which after 2 minutes of sawing did absolutely nothing. Then I saw your video, found my ancient chisel, grabbed a hammer, put the coil on the flat top of an iron curling barbell and wham! worked like a charm! Thank you🙂💯
Thanks for that!! A useful variation on the method I used to use for cutting bicycle cables before I became rich enought to afford proper cycle cable cutters. (4 kids, 6 bikes and a tandem to maintain made the purchase worthwhile.) I wrapped the cable tightly with insuating tape first, then cut, in this case through the tape as well. My dad showed me that many years ago before I became a granddad.

You rock!! That worked perfectly. After reading a comment by someone claiming it was faster and better with a handheld grinder, I decided to try a cut first with my grinder and a new blade. It worked BUT no where near as quick and clean as the cold chisel. Anyone reading this don't waste your time with the grinder, the cold chisel was the clear winner hands down! This was perfect, needed to cut wires for 6 alligator clips, nothing worked without fraying, saw this and it worked great, didn't need to buy new tool - thank you.
This worked well. The 1/8" steel cable I have has is covered with vinyl so no need for tape. I found a sharp cold chisel in my shop and a framing hammer. It took 4 or 5 whacks but it cut it. My 4lb hammer might've done it in 1 whack.
I was trying to trim a Weighted jump rope, I tried sheers, scissors and some other cutting tools, I didn’t realize it was metal inside, never thought of this!! Thank you!! Saved the day!

Great job, reminded of my dad's Caterpillar D-8 had a large cable cutter on the winch same idea. Maybe use a piece of flattened copper tubing on the vise anvil.
This inspired me to try using heat shrink tubing and cutting with a fairly affordable (cheap) pair of diagonal cutters. One piece of heat shrink (keep it under the heat long enough for the cable to get over the tubing's transition temperature, then let it air cool), cut in the middle of the tubing, and Bob's your uncle. With this method, you should be able to get a clean cut using any cutting tool that is strong enough to cut the steel. As a bonus, no matter how short the offcut is, the tubing prevents getting bits of steel wire all over the floor - just one neat, tidy piece going into the art bin.
You can get cutters to handle this size wire for about 5 dollars. Youll have more invested in a good hammer and chisel than that. But I get the point of the video to get the job done without having cutters. Well done.
@@Know-How-Now Cheap cutters, Harbor freight. They change models frequently. I had a frayed end on a winch line so I went to UA-cam and came across your video. I use power tools for most things. Using the electrical tape and a metal cutoff wheel works well and actually cauterizes the wire end a bit too.
If you don't have a solid metal surface to strike against, you can put on your safety glasses and set the butt end of the chisel on any solid surface such as a rock, tree or toerail. Next, loop the cable over the business end of the chisel and secure it on both sides of the chisel with one hand then strike the cable with the hammer, pinching it clean off between the hammer face and chisel point. One level crack usually does it. I've done 1/4" stainless this way and it never fails.

I dont know what's funnier the fact that hundreds of people seem to not know that braided wire/rope wire exists, or that if it's intended use is something like ziplining where it's carrying a load it will fray over time into a small threads just like a regular rope would. That is why gondola cables and stuff need to be maintained and replaced. Or the fact that people think when you cut a normal rope it goes "twang". The scene doesn't work properly because the only time they should have been able to reach that cable from where they were is possibly while the dude was zipping right over their heads as that part of the line would have the most droop/slack at that point. The fact that he makes it like over halfway to the next building and somehow the line was practically at eye level to the roof top is extremely jarring. Based on the age/use of those cables, it's easy to believe that one would be able to cut it rather easily especially since it was already showing signs of damage and they had tools.
Finally someone who uses electrical tape correctly by cutting with scissors, rather than just tearing and stretching the piece from the roll😁 Sorry to say this method likely won't work for me though, as I'm trying to cut a piece that's hanging- but this is still a very good video presentation, and solid method for many! Do you think good ol' fashion bolt cutters would do the trick? Guess I could let you know after I try too😆 Thanks for the upload either way!
A Dremel tool with a cutting wheel should do the trick. Some time ago I bought a Dremel and I am surprised at how often it has saved the day. I've never tried bolt cutters.

I then went with "plan-b", which was to simply roll up the dangling cable as tightly as possible, secured it with duck tape, then tucked away up high and out of sight. 😄
I thought I could cut clean with an angle grander but that was big fail. I saw this and said (quietly) BS, Then I did it but taped About an inch of the cable and cut through the tape and the cut was almost perfect. I think if I freshen up the edge of the chisel it will be better.

Bummer. If you have a dremel tool and a cutting wheel that would do it. If you don't have one, they are not very expensive. It's an incredibly handy tool to have, I use my often.

You are correct, that is best practice, but you know people are going to go for the claw hammer if they don't have a ball peen hammer. I suppose if you really went crazy the hammer could split/break. A friend of mine was splitting wood and the wedge shattered. That got him some stitches in his leg.

Perhaps you are thinking of a wood chisel? This is a cold chisel. My brother has been a machinist all his life, I asked him if doing this would ruin a cold chisel. The answer, it may dull it a bit.... easily sharpened with a grinder.
Know How Now , I just sharpened a very old chisel on a grinder to try this cut. 2 hits to sever a 3/16 cable. The chisel was fine after several cuts were made . I was making wire loops to hoist an ice shack that continually melts into the ice and needs raising. Using a floor jack.
Never, ever, EVER use a carpenter's "claw" hammer to strike a cold chisel. Use a BALL PEEN or "Machinists" hammer. Reason? Because a claw hammer, intended to drive soft nails, has a hardened, and thus BRITTLE, surface. Using a claw hammer on a cold chisel risks shattering the striking surface which may result in a hardened shard of metal taking out an eye or penetrating skin. The surface of a ball peen hammer is hard, but NOT brittle, and ideally made for striking impact tools. Always inspect your cold chisel before use such that the struck surface is not "mushroomed." If it is, "dress" it using a bench grinder such that the struck surface is once again flat, round, and with a slight chamfer all around the edge. Take the opportunity to sharpen the chisel as well.

That's good to know the bolt cutters won't do the trick.
I was able to cut this type of wire rope with a multi tool, 18 inch bolt cutters, side cutters, and a pair of 8 inch mini bolt cutters. So many ways

A sharp chisel would be best. If it's not sharp, it might take a few wacks.

Never, ever, EVER use a carpenter's "claw" hammer to strike a cold chisel. Use a BALL PEEN or "Machinists" hammer. Reason? Because a claw hammer, intended to drive soft nails, has a hardened, and thus BRITTLE, surface. Using a claw hammer on a cold chisel risks shattering the striking surface which may result in a hardened shard of metal taking out an eye or penetrating skin. The surface of a ball peen hammer is hard, but NOT brittle, and ideally made for striking impact tools. Always inspect your cold chisel before use such that the struck surface is not "mushroomed." If it is, "dress" it using a bench grinder such that the struck surface is once again flat, round, and with a slight chamfer all around the edge. Take the opportunity to sharpen the chisel as well.
