  • amzn.to/38QueCG The Knipex Wire Rope Cutter, part number 9562190T for the comfort grips and tether port: is an amazing cutting tool. Slices through steel wire rope like butter, but sometimes frozen butter, but butter just the same. I'm upgrading my 45 year old Suntour bike cable cutters. And this has serious applications for removing pet dogs from trapper's snares.
    Note: I've watched this video several times and cannot tell when I cut my finger. Any guesses?

    Timely advice. Just got a pair of blue heeler puppies. Been using the knipex cutters for a few weeks. Hope i wont have to use them like that but i'll definitely keep them with in reach if i suspect traps. Thank you

    I use these at work to cut 3/16 steel helicopter rescue hoist cable at work. IT takes quite a bit of arm strength, but the small size lets me get into the corners of a hoist drum if needed to extract a tangled wire.

    Felco makes a great C7 cutter that is for cables. I've been using them for 20 plus and they are the best cutters in regards to steel cables and solid strand wires.

    hi there, I would like to ask about cobolts, wouldn't it do the same job and could cut bolts whereas the ones you show in this video couldn't? Why just not to only have cobolts?

    • @lastbesttool
      @lastbesttool  11 місяців тому +1

      Cobolts have straight jaws that smear out the cable strands when cutting causing an uneven end. BTW, Snap On has their own Cobolt knockoff now it’s actually quite nice n

    Thanks for the thorough review and adding the tip on googling where traps are located. I carry a cable cutter in my upland hunting vest but it's not as nice as this one. I'll be replacing it with these because of how fast these work. Thanks again and I might steal your idea and do a video in the future about snare traps and how to locate them.

    Specifically for bicycle wire rope there is another smaller Knipex cutter. I find it more elegant a tool, so to speak. The one in the video would be more appropriate for thicker gauge stuff as you showed.

    Those Knipex cutters are really tempting for bicycle cables. I have an old pair of wire rope cutters made in Japan by HIT that are wonderful, but they don’t have the included crimpers so I need to grab my park cutters to crimp the cable ends on.

    A dedicated shop calculator is also nice... 1" = 25.4mm exactly (or 2.54cm). Google is also great for unit conversions.

    I've used both the knipex (work bought these) and the Felco C7 (4 pairs over the last 20 years). The Felco C7 are far better for the 7x7 galvanised steel wire rope (2mm) that we use.

    The modern bike specific cable cutters (e.g the Park Tool CN-10) are designed to cut the housing as well as the inner cable. The Knipex cutters look fine for the inner cable but the jaws look too parallel to cut the housing without crushing it. (I could be wrong, it's hard to tell without seeing/comparing them in the flesh)

    • @AG17_1
      @AG17_1 2 роки тому

      I have those knipex cutters and they are perfect for gear outer cables.
      For outer brake cables, I use a pair of Park Tool SP-7 side cutters.
      The knipex cutter would probably cut brake outers with no problem but I've always used side cuttera for that task.

    • @sandy_knight
      @sandy_knight 2 роки тому

      @@AG17_1 I'll take your word for it regards the knipex cutting gear cable housing cleanly. You're right about brake cable housing of course, it's been a few years since I worked on cable brakes, the steel strands run along the cable instead of coiling around it, so it's fine to cut with side-cutters.

    • @AG17_1
      @AG17_1 2 роки тому

      @@sandy_knight some of the more flexible Shimano gear cables (frame exit point to rear derailleur) are coiled and some cable disc brakes outers (Jaqwire and TRP) are straight instead of coiled to reduce compression under braking. When you know its obvious but worth checking if the cable is not branded or marked.

    I know Knipex makes these wire rope cutters in shear cut & center cut versions. Do you recommend shear cut over the center cut mainly for the cleanliness of the cut? Would center cut be more durable against harder materials?

    I have a park tool wire rope cutter. I got when I first got in to bike repair. And everyone acted like park took was. I wish I would have gotten the knipex Instead. I have othe knipex pliers and cuters. What do you think of park tool? I know you’ve heard of them haha.

    There's only one pair of Knipex flyers that I don't really care for That is the soft gripping pipe plies they have those soft grips don't grip anything and everything slips around and does not come loose unless you remove those soft grip things then it's okay! However the 40 or so other pairs of their plies I have are incredible

    Nice to know would be, if it also cuts bowden wire housings. And if it can do it, if the housing is not (to heavy) squeezed where it was cut. This ensures, that the bowden wire can run free and easy through the housing. And I would not need 2 different cutters. The Knipex web site does not mention if also housings can be cut.

      I use my Knipex for both wire rope and housing. They cut nicer than my Park Tool cutters and the Knipex crimp better. That said- I've screwed up a few cable housings with with both. Sometimes I'm just not paying attention

    Hello again Doc
    Thank you for another Great Video. These traps are placed in public areas? I don't think, I understand the purpose for them to be there? Again thank you

    • @alexdrockhound9497

      They are for trapping game animals. But there are very restrictive laws about where they can be. Not near public trails, have to post signs warning that they are in the area, etc. ive lived in montana for more than 30 years and never run across a trap.
