  • Gaming and gamers get a bad press, but do we deserved it?
Who are gamers in 2024? How many of us are there? What are the demographics, market share, and what is our real influence in the world?
Let's break it all down, and see if we really are the disaffected losers portrayed in popular media.

Gaming is a legitimate anxiety reducing activity.
Sometimes its hard to think clearly because of stress, and the space of mind games can put us in can take care of that for a while.
Optimal brained people (I was one before) doesn't consider that others have unique circumstances that limits their options of healthy pastime activities.
As an example, through internet and gaming an autistic person can bypass their lack of voice tone modulating, body language and all other sorts of social stuff that didnt develop on time/"correctly" and make meaningful relationships with others. Because a thought out greeting with multiple letters like hiiii +emotes/images hits different than a tired monotone "Hey." irl, where you got split seconds to figure everything out.
    Yay for vidya!

Non traditional gamer here. 75 yo retired medical professional. I spent 10+ years on WOW, then 10 years playing GW2. Why? I love being in a fantasy world exploring. And it’s fun ! Thank you for your content. We never stop learning even virtual has it’s value.

From my general experience, gamers are often hated on because they're the most sensitive, attention-paying set of customers in the entertainment business. And that's a good thing.

I just wish more than anything that devs were treated better. They need to unionise.

(I paused the video at 8:05 to comment, i might edit after finishing) I have many hundreds of hours in many video games, but I have never felt like it was as good as experiences i have had with (pardon me, english is not my first language) "real" people in the "real" world. I do agree with you mostly thruout this video, that gamers arent just gamers. that we are a diverese bunch of people that also can have other hobbies, i just think if your only hobby is sitting on your ass gaming 12 hours a day its no longer a hobby its a real issue if you aren't interested in other things too. I know people personally who will no life videogames instead of fixing their relationships issues or get surprised when they meet people who do not play videogames and have a real moment of cognitive dissonace. I understand that you arent talking about those types of people and you mean people who have a balanced ish life that can play videogames and not feel guilty about it. I also understand that some people cannot do much else and im not here to rag on people who gaming helps them tremendously.
What my point is, and this might be controversial, is that these types of videos or posts can be a (bad) favour for the no-lifers, making them think their habits are ok. Just because gaming isn't bad (or having any other hobby or interest for that matter) doesn't mean there isn't downsides if you have a unhealthy relationship with it. Everyone needs food too right? And plenty of people (myself included) have a hard time controlling intake.
EDIT: Yep, you talk about it. So I can than tell you that this video is really good. I'm very happy you talk about that it can be and issue, and so take back my statement that this video could be harmful. my bad, Im sorry, i did know i should've waited to comment :)

12:54 I can deeply relate to this sentiment. Throughout the majority of my life, I've navigated various disabilities, and gaming has undeniably had a profoundly positive impact on me. However, in recent years, I've noticed a troubling trend of increasing toxicity within gaming communities. It's disheartening to invest countless hours into games only to encounter individuals whose negativity tarnishes the overall enjoyment. Its certainly been hard to get back into gaming as much due to that.
